Republic Airport (FRG) is a medium-sized, primarily general and business aviation airport on New York’s Long Island. Located near The Village of Farmingdale, the airport is approximately 15 miles east of John F. Kennedy International Airport and approximately 15 miles west of Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip.
Farmingdale has non-standard shaped Class Delta airspace that extends from the surface to 2,600 feet. The airspace also underlies the New York Class Bravo and is just west of the Islip Class Charlie. Pilots flying into FRG for the first time need to thoroughly understand the different requirements for operating in this complex mix of airspace.
1:18 - Traffic mix
1:48 - Airport Configuration
2:27 - Awareness when landing from north and northwest. Pilots cleared to land on runway 19 have mistaken runway 14 for their assigned runway.
3:01 - Listen carefully to understand the pattern entry you are issued. You may receive instructions you were not expecting.
3:38 - Use of the line up and wait rule
4:20 - LAHSO procedures when landing on runway 32
4:54 - Runway location and taxiway identification changes
6:44 - Be aware when departing Republic to the north and northwest. In certain situations, primarily when JFK is landing on the parallel runways 22 left and right, Republic may assign some of its Class Delta airspace to the north to NY Approach.
The FAA's From the Flight Deck video series uses aircraft-mounted cameras to capture runway and taxiway footage and combines it with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items. Learn more at www.faa.gov/go/FromTheFlightDeck.
