As a citizen of Bostonia, the second most gentrified city in the country. It is not about connection, it is about students from other states coming in to the city and moving poorer people out. So they can get to work or college quicker.

Where gentrification is concerned displacement of the lower income residents Is not unintentional, it's part and parcel of the process itself.

@@JH-cy7rk The rich and the government both benefit from this. The rich speculate, buy buildings, put some shiny lights&paint, sell them, property value skyrocket, more rich&hipsters want to live there because it become trendy with all the money they spend. The rise in property value makes the government collect more taxes which force old owners to raise their prices. Then the poor have to go because they can't afford the rent that tripled. Both the rich and governments gain massive money with tourism now that the city got rid of those poor and have fancy restaurants. The sad part is when people praise this psychopathic behavior.

Gentrification is simply a huge tax grab without increasing taxes. Density, higher home prices, are higher tax revenues. The municipalities encourage this

You can’t have taxes and home prices rise proportionately. High taxes are do to areas with little industry, while areas with high housing prices have lower taxes. Why ? because wages , supply /demand and interest rates determine prices. Housing prices and taxes are Inversely proportional for those reasons. So actually areas being gentrificated see a flatting or reduction in property taxes .

Well, she's kind of suggesting construction of "new urbanist communities." Absent that, not really suggesting how to do things differently under the current circumstances. But also it's worth pointing out something that she realized, that complaints about a problem you benefit from don't have to be taken as a personal attack, and shouldn't alienate you from a discussion of the problem.

The focus on cost of living seems to be a key narrative in this and other gentrification pieces I have watched. The truth is that cost go up everywhere... even the burbs that she spoke of. People get squeezed out of their suburban homes all the time, there is no shield from foreclosures or rent increases in those picket fenced neighbourhoods she speaks of. Whether by rising costs of taxation, utilities, or escalating property values it can happy in any neighbourhood. People make adjustments. They don't have as many kids, they don't drive as nice of a car, they take fewer vacations and eat out less. When you can no longer afford to live somewhere, you either find a way to afford it, or you move. Same with any neighbourhood.

Gentrification is really a very serious issue indeed. I think, there should be properties set for sale and the rest only for rent with pricing protection from the government. otherwise there should be a way out for the "replaced" people to get some other "replacement area.

If the property is cheap, then the poor people there should buy it as it's affordable. Not cheap enough? You can buy properties in Detroit for less than $5K. But people still won't buy it. They rather pay $5K a year in rent and say they can't afford it.

If gentrification is caused by working class people who are unhappy with the suburbs because of a social disconnect and choose to move into the city to be closer together and feel like they live in a social environment then how can we deny that to those people. Telling someone they shouldn't move somewhere because they work to hard and would force other people to have to work harder is worse to me than forcing people who let a neighborhood rot stay there......Probably wrong in someone else's eyes but just my thoughts.

The truth is not the moving, its the market reaction....So the point is what regulation can be applied to regenerate areas with 'mild' increase rather than high that short term attractive gains would attract quick return investors, or do local authorities front the money over long term and attract business to supply money for people to earn then consume (but still keeping housing out of investment)? Do we actually try and take housing out of investment portfolio's? Again all cause and effect, so we need some kind of 1980's cold war games to play out the various scenarios....my pennies worth...

The idea that people who are “privileged” need to cater to the people who are marginalized is getting old. I actually want to live in a society where a woman will fail if she chooses to have children she cannot afford to raise because she has no marketable skills with which she can provide for them. I want to live in a society where the degree of difficulty a man faces when he looks for a job grows in proportion to the number of felony convictions he has on his record. I want to live in this type of society because it’s a society that has chosen to allocate its resources to more productive projects, rather than choosing to invest in a way that prevents people from suffering the consequences of their bad decisions. While I take no pleasure in either deserved and undeserved human suffering, I cannot tolerate seeing a society throwing good money after bad investing in people who will never become productive. If the speaker wants to have important conversations about people who are not capable of finding a new apartment to rent when they get priced out of the housing market, she should be prepared to hear that a social safety net that is strong enough to save these people may not be worth the cost of maintenance.

No, it is about people who are priviledge walking al over the less priviledge. The priviledge are coming in, and uprooting people's lives, simply because they have more money.
@aleniglesias5237

You may be missing the point, and it's that this "growth and progress" that happens to the neighbour is not a progress that includes people who were already living there. Is a new rich neighbourhood over a poor one. So is not a progress of the people who were living there but a progress of other people desplacing the actual residents. They are in a indirect way saying "I know this is your place but as I pay more, it's mine". Imagine if we apply this kind of thought to our houses, that just because someone can pay more than what you can, is the new owner and we have to move out. Is not quite fair, isn't it?
@stephencalder8357
@stephencalder8357 5 лет назад
@@Bloodom1 Yes, that's basically correct. That's a basic fact of life, and its pernicious effects extend far, far beyond the narrow example of inner city low-income residents. This is capitalism. Capitalism is so much better than the other economic systems. It's not a perfect system, it doesn't help everyone the same amount in the same way at the same time. But the overarching trend is that it is a great benefit to a society, to a nation, to a people. The American people. Me, you, and the people susceptible to displacement by gentrification. This used to be common knowledge. Now it's almost heretical to say such. Oh well, burn me at the stake, I guess.

What is more important to address is the root cause of the issue of people in a poor / ghetto community staying poor and getting in trouble and try to help them become less poor. >>> education about society, economics, career opportunities, training, personal finance as well as seeing role models, as well as systems with right incentives (so it actually makes more economical sense to work and achieve vs staying poor, giving birth to kids, and getting section 8 and food stamps - if one makes more money and puts less effort by not working and having lots of children then that is what most people will keep doing if they are rational). - ideally there should be free such educational programs for low income folks (especially for kids) in those areas so most of the kids learn the right mindset from young age and can actually grow up and be a bit more successful..

Virtue Signaling Defined Allow me to summarize: “Look what a good person I am.” Maybe she should consider a different idea. That for the families languishing in deep, intractable, intergenerational inner city poverty ANY change would be an improvement. So they’re forced to move from the old, rotting crime-ridden Harlem that they knew to a middle-sized and cheaper city in North Carolina or Texas that they don’t know? Boo hoo. Sounds about like the best thing that could have ever happened to those kids.

If you can’t afford to live somewhere don’t blame it on the government. Don’t blame it on race. Don’t blame it on property owners. When your land and the people around you are becoming better and increasing and you can’t afford to be on the same page then find a new place to meet your standards. That’s life.
