From the Vault: U.S. Army .30-40 Krag 

I bought an 1898 Krag at the Missoula gun show in 1985 and brought it back to the UK with me. A butter smooth action and very accurate out to 300 yards. I sold it 15 years ago and regretted it ever since☹ Well, we never own guns we are only custodians of them for a period of time... it was made 60+ years before I was born and it will be around well after I am gone😁 Vic

I have my great-grandfather's M1898 Springfield. Still in it's militarized version, it looks as good today as the day he owned it. Smooth action, easy to shoot, but a tad heavy. Can't imagine my great-granddad sloshing around he PI toting this thing.

I just found out about this gun today. Yesterday I was out metal detecting and found 3 casings and couldn't find out what they where for, so today I went to a gun shop and they helped me find out.

Just acquired a 1898 Kraft exactly like the one in your video. It doesn’t have a bayonet as when gun shows are back I will be looking to bring this back to original the best I can . Thanks for the video

Good morning. Just wanted to share some information about the Kreg. I have an 1892 Craig cartouches 1894 proofing mark is 1895. It is a serial number under 5,000. It is in pristine original unaltered condition. I brought it to Springfield Armory many years ago. They were excited to see an unaltered 1892. They confirmed to me that it was an original and every way. I am proud to own this rifle and one day I will do a video on it. I would love to show the world my gun. It just how beautiful it is. It still retains its cleaning rod under the barrel. And it's stacking swivel. Thank you for showing me your rifle. I would love to show you mine one day. I love shooting my great grandfather's sporterized Krag. I plan to get one for myself. Ammunition can be a bit of a challenge but is not impossible to find. It seems Remmington makes it in small batches every year. I try to pick up a box or two when I find it so we don't have to use any more of the shells marked US 30.

Have the one that my pop paid 2.50 for when he got out of the marines in ‘45. Still shoot it to this day,it had been sporterized and had a pistol grip added to the stock. One of the smoothest bolt actions I have ever used.

The sight is a 1902 Ski-Jump ramp style with the slide-up Peep sight was called a Sergeants sight for finer shooting at longer ranged targets. This tells us this one on the Arsenal reworks, there really isn't a Krag that hasn't been reworked do to wear and tear and the highly corrosive nature of the original rifle rounds. My Krag is a 1898 rifle that was re-barreled in 1922 from Springfield surplus using a 1903 Springfield 4-groove 30-06 rifle barrel that has been shortened to 22-inch at the breech, the breech threads recut and rechambered in 30-40 Krag and installed on a Carbine length stock. It is super accurate with 150 grain Barnes-X handloads at 2500 fps making for a great open sight Jeep rifle

I have an 1896 Krag that I inherited from my grandfather. It’s modified with a rear peep sight.

I have a sporterized 1896. Looks good in a walnut Bishop stock.

The magazine cutoff can be up off or down off depending upon the year made, early versus later . You have a 1902 sight, very similar to a 1898 sight ( most were modified) which have 3 notches and the rabbit hole starts. Nice rifle ❤

The 30-40 Jorgensen was in fact the first rifle adapted by the American military that fired more then one round. Everything the military used before that was single shot

I was wondering about the gravity feed -- if I remember right they had a ? scoop type thing on the breach that you can fill with loose ammo . -- Gravity feed . ?

I have one. The way it was explained to me, and I do it, is you drop a handful,5, in and close the gate. It works fine like that, although still not as efficient as a stripper clip.

Your Rear sight is the Model 1902 Rear sight with the "Sgt's Peep" installed at the rear, that flips up. This sight was designed for a little beefier 30-40 cartridge, but that round was deemed too powerful for the single locking lug action, so production went back to the Model 1898 rear sight, which is similar. UGH!

i was recently gifted a 1849 krag about like this one except for the sights and i have no clue how to work them i know that you can slide them but i don't know how it effects the aim any tips?

It was called 30 army, ive got a lot of orig. Shells so headstamped. I like the m1901 rear sight so much that i use it on 3 40mm cannons w/SKS front sights, 2 are still being built.

Please, I have to rectefy you. The Krag Jørgensen is a Norwegian invention. It is a common misdundetstanding that it is Danish, course the Danes adoptet the Krag Jørgensen as the first country in 1889. The US adoptet the KJ in 1892 and the final and perhaps the best shooting one was adopted by the Norwegians in 1894. Danish KJ chambeted in 8x58R. US KJ chambered in 30-40 Krag. Norwegian KJ chambered in 6,5x55. Other than that minor fault, the video is ok. I am about to post a few videos on YT on the Krag Jørgensen rifle!

You didn’t mention that the Krag only has one locking lug this they never could increase bullet power and sometimes the lug would shear off for no reason.

the palmer carbine was adopted before the krag jorgenson making this the second bolt action the U.S adopted.

Even though it's a Norwegian designed rifle adopted by first the US Army not Danish. The Krag was also adopted by the Danish Army. I like the condition of your rifle.

It was called 30 Government, and later so was the 30-06, and it is closer to the 308 than the 30-30

Sir! The Krag-Jørgensen M/1894 is a Norwegian invented rifle, not Danish. Nope, you don’t have place the shells in the magazine «one-by-one» - just drop a handful of shells in the magazine, flip the gate, the ammo will line up straight and chamber nicely.

Wondering if anyone can help me out. I bought a model 1898 krag carbine. It's serial number is 467968 and i was wondering if anyone could tell me if this gun was used in the spanish-american war, or at least if it was manufactured in time to see combat in the war. I'm having trouble finding information on carbine serials numbers since they were counted separately.

Actually the full and proper name is the M1892/1896/1898 US Springfield Rifle. Krag-Jorgensen is not part of the nomenclature at all.

Not true about the strip clip being faster. Take those five rounds, drop them all into the trap door and shut it, not one at a time.
