Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:42 - How Hip-Hop Made Timberland a Billion Dollar Brand (Published June 2020)
11:25 - How Birkenstock Became A Cult Classic (Published July 2020)
21:28 - How Crocs Became An Unlikely Billion-Dollar Brand (Published May 2020)
In the U.S., the Timberland boot is widely recognized as a fashion staple. But that wasn’t always the case. In the early ‘90s, hip-hop stars on the East Coast adopted the boot and sales began to climb. At the time, hip-hop wasn’t mainstream and the strength of black spending was often overlooked by marketers. Its executives would learn to both respect and embrace their evolving consumer base, which would change the trajectory of the brand forever. Throughout the ‘90s, the Timberland brand went through a massive expansion, seeing revenue climb over $1 billion in 2000.
Birkenstock sandals have withstood decades of passing fashion fads. Since the 1960s, they have adorned the feet of hippies, models, moms, dads and even Gen Z. Birkenstock's success relates to its selectivity in the market. In 2016, it chose to remove its products from Amazon and turned down collaborations with streetwear giant Supreme. Whether it's a counterculture statement or a modern day fashion staple, Birkenstocks never go out of style.
A lot of people think Crocs are really ugly. People who love to hate Crocs had cause to celebrate in 2008, when investors were writing the company off as a passing fad. Crocs lost over $185 million that year and cut 2,000 jobs. The stock plunged to just over $1 a share from a high of about $69 a year earlier. But over the next decade, Crocs would go on to sell 700 million pairs of shoes worldwide. It’s become a top brand among Gen Z and limited edition Crocs are selling for up to $1,000 on the resale market. Even celebrities like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Post Malone are wearing the shoes.

I've worn Timberland and similar type shoes way before they were considered 'fashionable'. I always got the low shoe style, not the high tops or ankle boots. I always had two pairs. Being a carpenter/welder, I'd wear one pair to work and one pair to kick around in. When my work pair would get too worn out, I'd throw them away and buy a new pair and use my dress pair as my 'new' work shoes !!! But now that I'm retired, I usually kick around in Native Shoes, "Jefferson" style.

The fact that timberlands were originally made to be blue collar durable workshoes and then turned into being for hip hop artists and then fashion gurus (aka people who didn't even need them) and then the price of them skyrocketed so the people who actually used them couldn't afford them is stupid.
@akshayde
@akshayde Год назад
So that leaves a market open for other brands to step in and take that blue collar pie. Tims can't help but become expensive with high demands if they want to become a prestige brand and have the kind of perception value that say a nike has and have a high valuation that honestly money can't buy

About 39-years ago a smallish Mediterranean looking young man came into my shoe store and introduced himself. His name was a very memorable one too, Matt Sleeper. I was just 21-years old. I remember he said I'd probably never heard of the brand he represented, but they were in the midst of a big push into the national marketplace and he was barnstorming the South placing the brand. I told him I was aware as I'd read Rolling Stone magazine since I was 13 and had noticed their advertisements in most issues. I saw the core things they were doing: moccasins and boots. These two were kind of New England things. For instance, Dexter had been making loafers for years and had several years earlier introduced their Italian influenced Alpine hiker named "Sitka". The company leveraged the all-leather waterproof boot segment with their original "wheat 8 and 6-inch boots". They were in the midst of invading Sperry's "Top-Sider" lock on boat shoes with their own take on that shoe which was simply a better shoe. They also further leveraged the moccasin segment with a kind of "super moccasin" that had 3-eyelets, leather linings, and then then game-changing idea of putting the same amber colored Vibram Montagnabloc lug soles as were on the "Wheat Boot". In short order, Timberland owned the waterproof boot segment and at the same time were putting up serious sales in their boat and non-boat moccasins. Other brands like Herman Survivor and Sperry suddenly found their sales divided and going downward. I still sell Timberland and the work-oriented Timberland Pro brands as of 2023.

Mu father used to say that tennis shoes were going to ruin people's feet. I know now why hje said that long before they become so unmiversally worn on a daily bass. What you are saying is why. You need solid support betweem the ground and your feet which athletic shoes that put flexibility and as much "mush" for cushioning as is possible. I also have high instep and thick feet with prominent 2nd and 3rd toes so pointy shoes are out. We spend a great deal of our lives on our feet so shoe manufacturers need to cater to people with out of the norm feet but there is no profit in that. SIXTY EIGHT PAIRS OF CROCS??! I think we need to have an intervention! This behaviour cannot continue!

Well-meaning people have given me crocs. I have given them away. You can't buy my most comfortable footwear. They are the old South African Defence Force PT shoes, khaki canvas-and-rubber trainers with a superficial resemblance to All Stars. Mine are are fifty years old this year and still going strong!

I wasn't aware that crocs were so popular these days. I thought there were two reasons, period, for wearing crocs: you're wearing them around the house where no one can see you, or you're a nurse in a hospital and you have the excuse that you wear them for work reasons. Literally no other excuses for this footwear other than that. Although I gotta say some of them influenza people were pulling them off quite well.

I’ve never seen bright yellow wheat; I’ve never owned Tim’s that were the color of real wheat.

They never said they don't ant to sell to black people. They just said they want something that people will by for decades. Not just a fad, that will be over in a couple years.

Swartz was right. How in the world is it sustainable if shoe sales start resembling drug sales, cause there will be better drugs, or more hyped drugs.

Crocs are ugly. But they're good for when you're cutting your grass. They're easier to clean the boots or sneakers.

Timberland has quality, durability and comfort. Birkenstock is.... comfortable as much as a sandal can be.... Crocks are well, plastic and as ugly as Birkenstock. I own Timberland, can't get through winter without them. Never bought Birkenstock or Crocks.

Me too. Love Timberland premiums for snow ,rain,sleet, great boot for new England weather. Kinda like the classic LLbean maine hunting boots. Never had crocs, or birkenstocks ,just no need for me. i like running shoes most of the year.
