Hello guys, next up in the series ‘Airlines and Branch Lines of Cornwall’ is this quick little jaunt down The Maritime Line with GWR from Truro to Falmouth (Falmouth Docks to be precise) in their class 150.
This is a lovely little line, steeped in history and innovation - both old and new. The interesting Penryn station is a great example of the latter whilst Isombard Kingdom Brunel also played his part in shaping the line back in the early days of its construction.
Falmouth is steeped in maritime history and is well-worth a visit in itself, together with Pendennis Castle. Both are easily accessible from Falmouth Town and Falmouth Docks respectively.
I'll show you inside the train - the class 150 which is a dogged workhorse along many of these Cornish branch lines and I'll also tell you how much I paid, in total, for this day out which you may find useful if planning your own Cornish adventure.
As always guys, thanks for watching and enjoy the video!

Penryn was indeed once a standard two-platform passing place. There was also one at Perranwell. Signal box and loop at both were taken away in 1971. Falmouth originally had two platforms and the signal box there shut in 1966. You might have noticed that both tunnels, many of the viaducts and bridges are built to 'mainline' standards and for double track, but this never happened. Money was already tight when the enhancement to double the branch service to half-hourly was planned and there was a real threat that the whole scheme would be sunk. Restoring the former Up platform would have to include a disabled-friendly footbridge with lift towers at crippling cost. Hence the cunning plan to use a single platform face for both directions. It took ages to devil the detail as it had never been done before, and certainly not in a way that would comply with today's technical standards, but there it is. I know this as I was involved in developing the solution. The scheme has proved a real boost and the branch is looking better than it's been for decades. You're welcome!

And I think it’s an excellent design. Should be used in more places then I guess it depends on the constraints of the location (or otherwise). Bit of a flying visit this was tbh, hope to get down that way again next year. Cheers Tim 😊👍

Hi Steve, thanks for the comment. Yes a nice introduction for me into the Cornish branch lines. Some interesting features along the line too - like Penryn. Cheers.

For a long time Cambridge also had only one main platform - a very long one. It had a crossover at the midway so that two mainline trains could be accommodated at once. A second and third platforms have now been added. I guess that the similar arrangement at Penryn avoids the need for a footbridge and lifts, so quite neat.
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 2 года назад
Hi Roland, thanks for the info on Cambridge, I’ve never been tbh I presume the additional platforms have now negated the need. But yes Penryn I think it used to have another platform but they’d have had to restore that and, like you say, provide access to it. This seems like a cost-effective solution and it’ll be interesting to see if there are any more examples. Maybe it’s just more suitable for small single-track lines?

Beautiful, these Cornish branches do look quaint! As for the long platform, Cambridge had this for years until recently (I see someone has already mentioned it below!) I don't know of any others though..
@LetsMakeaTrip

Hi mate! Yes, more ‘quaintness’ to come! Thinking about Cornwall, I’m not sure if many more have a passing loop, let alone a longer platform 😊

@@LetsMakeaTrip Penryn is unique, although I'm aware that the same idea has been proposed for reinstated loops on the St Albans Abbey and Blackpool South branches and there may be others.

The little windows are open = yet another aircon failure. That station design is very clever avoids the time wasting set back cross as is common during peak times on the Sunshine Coast line. each one adds 5 minutes to the trip!
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 2 года назад
Yes it is clever and fairly obvious when you think about it, providing of course you’ve got enough platform length on the one side.
@CreativeEm
@CreativeEm 2 года назад
Nick Hiscock, yet another arrogant comment from you. It's not an aircon failure as such systems are very rarely installed on UK trains as the weather doesn't warrant it. Though even if it was, with the ongoing pandemic transport companies in the UK are mandated to open windows to increase ventilation, as Mark alluded to
@nickhiscock8948
@nickhiscock8948 2 года назад
@@CreativeEm There is nothing worse than getting on a train with broken aircon on a 40 degree C plus day! had that experience before on a bloody road coach 7 hours of hell when it was 45 degrees C outside! There has been no new rollingstock built since the early 1980s that wasn't built with aircon that I am aware of. 1970s and earlier rollingstock was the last non aircon rollingstock and was only on urban trains. regional and long distance trains started to faze out non aircon stock in the late 1950s.
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip 2 года назад
@@nickhiscock8948 it was very hot that day and, I tell you what, by the middle of my third trip, I was absolutely roasting - even with the windows open. I did take a portable fan with me though which was definitely worth it 😂
