The Detroit Shock complete one of the most amazing turnarounds in professional sports history. The worst team in the WNBA in 2002, the Shock surge in 2003 under Bill Laimbeer and dethrone the 2 time defending champion LA Sparks in front of a sellout crowd of 22,000+

could you upload the entire game in honor of the WNBA'S 20th season, for my enjoyment as someone that misses the DETROIT Shock, and so that this underrated Cinderella season in North American professional sports will never be forgotten?

This was a wonderful victory for Midwestern, Blue Collar hard work over Hollywood glitz and fakery. Love the shots of Queen Diva Lisa Leslie sitting sadly on the bench as Deanna Nolan and the "Bad Girls" finish off the Sparks!!!!

It was ironic and a repeat of all sorts when another Detroit team (Pistons) beat another LA team (Lakers) the following season in 2004.

@@NateTheGr8ness more foreshadowing than irony but yes, it was definitely a premonition of what was to come

I will too. Sucks the Shock, out of all WNBA teams, are moving :^(

I was so happy to see my hometown WNBA team win it all. But this team should still be in the WNBA and playing at LCA right now. No way you win three championships and you're out of the league. Same thing happened to the Houston Comets. Damn shame.

Oh how I wish the people bashing on the WNBA could listen to the crowd, celebration, and what the ESPN2 commentators are talking about. To all those people hating on the WNBA, that's right 22,076 present to observe the biggest turnaround no NBA team HAS NEVER DONE!!! Remember, the Detroit Shock were the WORST IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE the previous season.

@highlyaroused83 Amen! The Detroit Shock will be missed dearly. They will have a home in Detroit no matter what. I don't blame Katie Smith and Nolan leavin. I'm STILL angry Oklahoma has taken ANOTHER professional team from a great fanbase. First the Supersonics (now Thunder), then MY BELOVED SHOCK, what next? An NHL team from Canada? Geez!

I agree with you and miss a WNBA team in the Detroit area. The team formerly known as the Detroit Shock will now be in Dallas-Fort Worth. I doubt, unlike Vivek Ranadive, that Tom Gores is interested in bringing back a WNBA team to Detroit. The Palace isn't 6 Championship Drive for no reason. The Detroit Shock's turnaround from worst in 2002 to best in 2003 for the championship remains one of the best North American professional and underrated sports moments.

who the hell do you think you are? the wnba rocks, they play much harder than any other nba player out there! thank you! Detroit, L.A. and Houston were dynasties!! GO WNBA!! and yes it is the best turnaround, from only having 9 wins in one season to 25 wins and a title, get real people!!

This should have been the turning point for the WNBA. This was less than 2 years after Nancy Lieberman put her girlfriend in the Shock's starting lineup after an open tryout. This was supposed to signify that ability over lifestyle choices and political affiliations would be what the WNBA was all about moving forward. It ended up being an anomaly because now teams have forced "player wife" arrangements, the best players avoid the league entirely, (especially if they are straight,) and radical left political posturing is more important than playing good basketball. The WNBA is a sad, pathetic joke now, but this video gives us a glimpse of what could have been.

At the risk of comparing apples to oranges: Karen Davidson is the Shock's Jeffrey Loria. Nolan Richardson is their Claude Brochu through conducting the "40 Minutes of Hell" sale in 2009. I am yearning the day when the WNBA expands the number of franchises in the league (again) and Detroit has a team once again (e.g. the Tulsa team relocates back to the Motor City).

1) Cash plays for the Seattle Storm now 2) The Sparks lost to San Antonio in the ever deciding game 3 (I was bummed b/c I wanted a Detroit-LA finals) 3) Lakers are a one man team. Without Mr-I-Have-A-Guess-My-Score-Game-Every-Game-Night, they'd suck worse than the Clippers. 4) The Shock completed a turnaround no NBA or other WNBA team could complete (Boston was not the WORST in the league in 2006-07, Memphis was)
@BrownBrother27

@docwolfe77 That's the estimated capacity (22,076 if you want to be precise) for the Palace of Auburn Hills whether for NBA or WNBA basketball.

I have to ask. With what Bill Laimbeer did with the WNBA's Detroit Shock, Why isn't this man an NBA Head Coach? More than that, Why isn't he the next Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons? It takes a former bad boy to bring back the Bad Boys!

You have to remember. The Detroit Shock were the worst team OVERALL in the league in 2002. Of course in 2003, the Shock earned the best record in the entire league and won the WNBA championship. The Tigers had an OUTSTANDING season in 2006. Unfortunately for you and me, the Detroit Tigers choked in the World Series.

May I mention, if the Celtics win the NBA title this year, their turnaround------the best in the NBA----wouldn't be the greatest turnaround because BOSTON was not 2ND worst, not the worst, team in the league (Memphis was the worst last season).

The Detroit Shock lost by 20 points at Staples Center. Ironically, they beat LA by 29 points at the Palace. Los Angeles Sparks are my second team but my first team will always be the Detroit Shock. My prediction is Detroit over LA in 5 at Staples Center (attendance: 13k to 16k). However, Lisa Leslie will dunk as her final 2 points.

Awesome time to be a Detroit sports fan! The Shock would win two more championships while the Pistons won a championship to go with six consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Red Wings won it all in 2008 and the Tigers got to the World Series in 2006. Good times, good times!
