I too become very anxious on freeways - especially around Atlanta where folks drive 90 mph! - so I use backroads all the time and have for over 40 years. You miss a lot on freeways/ highways - the backroads are far more fun!
I suffer from panic attacks so I understand! Driving in California especially freeways & toll roads is horrible! I try to stay on surface streets as much as I can. We still have traffic on them but not as bad depending on the time.
I used to give voice lessons in Atlanta at the historical cemetery. Oakland. Once a tour group through and asked me to come back and sing and play an autoharp so I went back for the tour guide. Bankhead is known for not being safe. No gang drag racing on Bankhead I hope.
I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears! Wickford, the town my dad’s hardware store, Barber Hardware, was located on 17 Brown Street. That street is the major retail street. Well, in my day, over 50 years ago. Our home was a mile outside of Wickford. As a youngster, my sister and friend would walk or ride our bikes on the back road to town. Recall Drug was there and had a true soda fountain. You could get a hotdog and coke for 25 cents! Boy oh boy, dating myself. Ryan’s Market was a grocery store that had the best meats. It was owned by 5 brothers. Wickford Elementary was the grammer school I went to grades 1-6, then junior high, and North Kingstown High school that is still open. Memory lane. Have you been to the antique store named Garden Gate? It is just outside of the village and used to be a gift store. It is my goal to get there, my sisters-in-laws have been and loved it. On another note, putting the pot holder over the handle of the spinach pie oven pan is a great idea! I have grabbed onto a hot handle and it wasn’t pretty!
Lodge makes a handle cover over the handle made from silicone useful for all handles do there is no accidental burning. I use a titanium set. The handles come off. It costs $3000.00 for the starter set. I never burn myself with that set. I love the silent processor. I don’t have to cut or mince things with knives. I am going to make the spinach, even that has more oxalates may not help me..
I cannot believe you are here!!! I live in Wickford. From a long line of the Ryan Family who owned a market in the downtown which is now a kayaking center. These beautiful Historic homes are truly magnetic and beautiful. Hoped you too the walk behind the Main Street of those homes, as they are on the water. My father was a longtime fisherman who docked more than one boat in those waters! Geez I wished I knew you were coming❤
We all miss so much of what Wickford was like back then” in the day” and now the Art Festival coming this weekend. Never will be the same as having it IN THE VILLAGE
@@newenglandfinelivingI could have filled you in on what Wickford was really like. East Greenwich has become a really hopping place. And the Green Door??? It’s a great shop! I buy Christmas gifts there every Season. 😮
@@donnaryan9365 ik! there is no more Ryan's, no more Wilson's. No drug store, no bank. No diner to get breakfast. Can't even get an ice cream cone in the village. I miss it all.
Gorgeous video! I want to jump in the car and go now! And like you, Linda, I hate highways! I’ll drive every back road and I don’t care how long it takes. Thank you, thank you!
Linda, thank you for another beautiful video. As an "historic home and village" fan, this video is a favorite. As always, your content, filming, music, and messaging are the best. Living in NYC, I only get to see these beautiful New England towns through your camera lens. God bless your "kindred spirit". Robert.
I come from Westerly RI. I live in NC. Ty for your trips around New England. At one point I lived in Wickford and when I watched the video I said to self “there is no place like home”. Thanks.
Linda, loved the tour that you took us on. Liked the homes and colors of them. I also like the history that you teach everybody. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤pat
Dear Linda, i am grateful for your reminders to slow down, enjoy the journey ( off the fast path) and find beauty in many gifts to be found along the path. I would have been so discouraged by all the closed shops, but you found ice cream for dinner and coffee and sweets to indulge! You chose joy and peace for your heart (and anxiety). Such a great reminder, again, to stop chasing perfection and find beauty in life. Loved this video and your transparency about your pie!!! So me!! We ARE kindred spirits, although quite different in life circumstances.
Wickford is where John Updike's, "The Witches of Eastwick" is set. The town features a large Witches Parade at Halloween. Quite the scene! There are lots of witches in RI! On a historical note, Roger Williams departed from the Puritans, and founded RI based on religious freedom. That's why the oldest Episcopal Church and Synagogue in America are located in RI. The Wicca's left with Roger Williams, too! In the summer Wickford hosts a wonderful Garden Tour, Art Fair, and Water-fire celebrations in their harbor. At Christmas they have a lovely Holiday Fair. I'm sorry more shops weren't open when you visited. "The Mermaid's Purl" is wonderful for all types of needlework. BTW -the next town over - is pronounced East "Grěn-itch".
Thank you and I did not know about the filming... It all makes sense now since every time I watch the movie, I try to figure out what New England town they are in. If I looked it up in the past, it was before I ever traveled to Warwick. The man who played the pastor in the movie helped us out with a live auction one year, way back when, in Ipswich, MA. I guess I could have asked him then LOL.
Yes! I no longer drive and haven't seen Wickford, or East Greenwich in over a decade. I lived in Wickford and East Greenwich in the 60s through early 80s. Yes, East Greenwich pronounced 'Gren itch', also referred to as 'East G'. The more historical homes are 'upstreet' or in the Peirce Street area, up from the old Courthouse. 'Downstreet', on & near the water, (King, Queen, Duke, streets etc) also have colonial homes. I relished living in Wickford, sailed frequently, was married in the Old Narragansett Church (located through the St Paul's Episcopal Church community center garden). It's the church portrait painter Gilbert Stuart was baptized in (and so were my nieces & son). I have now lived in New Hampshire for over 30 years and am very familiar with your beautiful area, as I live quite close by. New England is a Blessing to be sure! Thank you so much for the lovely trips.
Another fun excursion, and thanks Linda for putting in a few words in favor of doing business with local shops. The spinach pie recipe looks beautiful, and with those ingredients it would have to be. I love pine nuts in anything. 💟
I lived in Wickford for five years and loved every moment of it. My girlfriends parents owned the Narragansett Bank house for decades but had to sell a few years back due to her moms passing. Love this video.
Loved seeing the historical homes...loved the plaque that said on this date nothing happened. Your spinach pie looked delicious. Thank you once again for sharing your gifts. Blessings and prayers...
Greetings from RI, Linda. After many years of visiting RI (specifically Newport), my late husband and I moved up here from Newtown, CT - another beautiful NE town - in 2004 to be closer to our daughter. She lives in Saunderstown; Wickford is her "downtown." My grandson currently resides in East Greenwich, and I'm in Wakefield. Here East Greenwich is pronounced the same as the town in CT. Glad you featured our little part of the world.
I live in California’ where people drive way over the 65 mile speed limit on freeways all the time! The only time they don’t is when sitting in mass amounts of traffic. There are fatal accidents everyday on freeways and surface roads. We have the nastiest rudeness drivers. I have no choice as I have to use toll roads and freeways to get to certain places inland from the coast. I really love New England! The most beautiful part of the US I ever been! Thanks for another wonderful video.
I hear you ... lived in California for 30 years and welcomed the times when traffic slowed to a crawl on the freeways. I'm now back in Rhode Island and enjoying every minute!
I screenshot so many parts of this video. Just loved the homes featured. My husband & I live in a colonial home in Montana,( I know funny!). We have gotten so many ideas from the brick walkways to weathervanes to put on our carriage house. Love all of the character details. God bless Linda! John 3:16
Thank you Linda, once again you took me along to a Happy Place on Sunday morning. We had Wickford on our list to visit, while in Newport, last Fall but, simply ran out of time. After a very stressful, heartfelt week, with passing of my oldest Brother, that I was the closest too, out of 4 Brothers, this was a video, that took me away from it all. ❤️🙏 Thank you once more!
Linda, I just love your videos. I am a New England girl, Born in Western Ma, grew up in NH, moved back to Ma after we were married. We had a little place on Newfound Lake, NH for over 30years. 13 years ago we retired to Georgia to be near our son and his family, and have nicer weather. Didn’t want to deal with snow. I now realize after my grandsons have grown, I miss home….NH. Georgia will never be home to me after living most of my life in New England. We are in our 70s now, but is it ever too late to go home? I so enjoy your travels, your home, your pup. I relate to you in so many ways, it’s like having a friend over for coffee and visiting. I am making your spinach pie for dinner. Wish me luck! ❤
I enjoyed traveling with you today, Linda! I understand about the highway anxiety. I used to think nothing about driving on the highways, but not so anymore. I manage to get around CT via the Merrit Parkway, route 1 or backroads now that I am retired. Anything that requires I-95, my husband will drive now. Your spinach pie looked yummy!! 😊
Good morning Linda. I muat tell you I watch you every day. You always give me a lift! I hope Willow is getting well each and every day. I also want to say I love the historical visits you make as I love American Hisatory. I, too love flowers. I love what you do with your gardens and also the visis you take us on field trps to other beautiful gardens. . Thank yiu!😀🌸💐🏵🌹🥀🌺🌻🌼🌷
I loved the idea of a candle in the car. Now I just have to remember to do this! I live in Queensland Australia but I really do love all the style of homes in the U.S .I adore your videos showing these homes. Thanks
I also get extreme anxiety on highways. I love back roads and I can get you anywhere on back roads. Your spinach pie looks delicious. I love New England and always enjoy your road trips. Loving everything about your channel. Thank you.
Linda, another great video! Perfect for 4th of July weekend. I seems though to me, stores should open for your arrival! Think of the missed opportunity for you to thrift in their stores! Best wishes!
Oh Linda...your videos NEVER disappoint! I hate driving on highways too...but I need to get down to these towns and visit So charming. I think when my daughter comes for a visit...we will make this road trip! Thank you!
Just love these videos, I visited New England in the 80s in the Autumn and just loved the whole area. I live in England, in a very old house, but there is just something so charming about these towns and villages🧡
Your pie came out good. I love going into town and listening to bands play. My daughter’s town does it every weekend in the summer months. I loved the idea of displaying the red book and cool that his daughter’s picture hangs in the same room . Great touch Linda😊
Linda, your tours always make me homesick for NE. I lived in CT for 10 years and miss it and surrounding areas very much. We live in AZ now but it doesn’t have the shops and charm that NE has. Thanks! Mandy
Linda, I love your style with the spinach pie, cray cray...lol! The tour of homes was wonderful, I really enjoyed all the colors, fences & plants. The sugar shack is looking great! The currant jelly does have a beautiful color & looks tasty! thanks for sharing!
Happy Fourth of July, Linda! And to all your fellow Americans! As one of your Australian friends and followers, I loved hearing you mention New England in Australia! It's a beautiful, picturesque part of the country in the great state of New South Wales, and I have never seen the reverse version of our traditional flag, so that was somewhat of a treat! I thoroughly enjoyed coming along on your travels in this video. So many pretty, charming homes and gardens to see! Thank you. Lots of love, Sarah xo
I had a lovely walk in Wickford this evening based on your recommendation! I am from PA, but in Rhode Island for a family event. Really enjoyed the beautiful historic houses along the Main Street and got some great photos!
Those towns are sooo beautiful ! You do live in a special area. Too bad those shops were closed, so disappointing!! Your spinach pie looked delicious !!
I loved everything in this video! The towns are so clean and picturesque! Especially loved the topiaries in front of the shops! The sugar shack would make a beautiful tea shop. Thanks for sharing another peaceful experience, it ALWAYS helps with my anxiety. Linda, I can’t express how much your video’s and vibes have help me for over 5 years. 🪴🇺🇸🌸❤☕️🌿🥧
Loved this video, Linda. The towns are so quaint, just as you say, like living in a Hallmark movie. Ben was doing a nice paint job on the Sugar Shack. That red color really pops! I made red currant jelly once. It is a lot of work but is very delicious. Can't wait to see what you are up to this week for your next video.
Fun New England small town travels once again! And the spinach pies (both of them) look so tasty! (It's a favorite of mine, too.) The sugar shack is looking terrific - kudos to Ben for his labors, too, and to Shannon for her currant jelly! (Another favorite of mine.) Love the bunting on your mantel and on the front of Sugarwood! Have a lovely week!
I had anxiety with regard to driving on highways as well. I pretty much kept it hidden. Once I was no longer required to do so and help with the care of my Dad, I came clean. I couldn't believe how many people were in the same boat. A weight was lifted.
Love all your videos but this one hit close to my heart. I live in Rhode Island and have the pleasure of visiting Wickford and East Greenwich (said "East Gren-itch")😂 often. The walk on Main St in Wickford is simply lovely with the hidden gardens and old homes. The antique shop near the end of Main St (not the ocean end) actually had a part of an old prop plane which was so fascinating. Of course I watched your spinach pie making and realized you were baking the Greek version. I'm partial to the Italian version which is like a calzone with black olives , Italian seasonings, mozzarella and sometimes pepperoni. I'll try your recipe as it looks yummy. Thank you for sharing your travels et al with us!!
I loved this video, thank you so much for traveling to these towns for us and the history witch I love. I am going to try the spinach pie looks so good.
Thanks for the tours of charming towns and shops Linda. They take me to a different world so different from my Midwestern town. I've been to Charles SC many times and drink in the history and architecture. You are so blessed to live in New England. Please keep 'em coming. Going to make the phyllo dough spinach pie. ♥️
I love looking at how people decorate their entrances and doors...wreaths, twinkle lights on greenery and a basket with colorful flowers...it says welcome to my home!
I hope to share more of home soon, but we have been focusing on projects around the house, not filming, to enjoy a nice slow summer and time together. Living in the moment ;-).
I love watching your channel Linda . As a Brit, I often look at the towns and villages you visit ,and think how much they could be in the South East of England . I live in Groton (pronounced with a long o here ) , in the UK , the countryside could be where you lived , and lived ! ❤
I love hearing about towns our towns were named after! Funny how we for some reason changed the Groton pronunciation. It sounds prettier with the long O. Vs one that rhymes with cotton.
I did wonder if the short O pronunciation is the original old English , it does sound like something our ancestors would say! I do prefer to long pronunciation though. John Winthrop was born a mile away from me ,in Edwardstone , I’m sure you know all about this as your family history is part of the amazing story of how America came to be ! Your channel is a haven for those who are looking for something special, to make life better. and more joyful. I always look forward to your next video!
Beautiful places to live. I’m from California but I’ve always had a fascination about these areas. I would love to see the Tea shop seems like a relaxing place. Also your pie looks delicious ❤
Why did I never visit Wickford when I lived there? one of many beautiful New England towns. I especially love all the flower boxes on all the buildings. All are beautiful but some are truly glorious. I would definitely have to get out of bed for that sweet face staring at me! Wonderful video. Ice cream for lunch! Yes!
Thank you for the info on the paint colors, Linda! After being in an accident on a busy hwy involving a tractor trailer, I too do not like driving on busy highways! No one was hurt, thankfully, but the sound of the metal and screeching tires still stays with me. I really enjoyed this video! They’re always fun to watch!
Thank you Linda for all the beautiful sites..Loved it all..And thank you for giving me the idea of Spinach Pie..Looked so good.. Thank You and Happy 4th of July.🎉🎉.. Until be time..
Loved the places you visited. It’s a shame that most of those shops and food places were closed. Your spinach pie looked fantastic 😁. Yay for the coffee grinder ☺️👍🏻.
Good morning Linda, your spinach pie looked delicious! I once made twice burned eggplant parm. I forgot to set the timer , the cheese was black I took off the cheese and put fresh cheese on and broiled it for a minute. I never saw it go so fast!😅 Someone asked for the recipe and said it was the best they’d ever had. I couldn’t duplicate it if I tried.
Gorgeous video as always. 💕 I can completely relate to the highway anxiety, I’m the same way - especially in Massachusetts! 🤭 Driving the backroads may not be as efficient but it’s much more pleasant!
I was wondering how early you are out and about, as so many shops are still closed. I know even in my own town, its a waste to get up early , as nothing is open til at least 10 am and some not till 11!!! So frustrating. It did amaze me when you said you have anxiety about driving on highways, as you are always traveling ... and by yourself. You are my idol! I am the same way. I will drive across the USA if there is someone riding shotgun But alone, I get anxious . I am always so envious of all the towns and places you go to by yourself. I need to be brave and try and venture out more. I adore antiquing, gardens, quaint and interesting shops, water views. I want that spinach pie for dinner! I'll be there at 6!
