As an Okinawa-te practitioner and a TKD black belt, toes pointed out are using the instep as a striking surface, much like a round kick. Good for quick groin strikes.
Since I have a boxing sack I've learned that keeping the toes back and the foot pointing forward at the same time is the hardest and the pain proves this 😆 Never had that issue in the gym where we only kicked those light targets
I was practice karate and never I did mae geri with the other leg (suport leg) bent.
