Front Mission 3 Remake Looks Dissapointing & Here's WHY

I wanted to express my thoughts on the Front Mission 3 remake demo shown at the Tokyo Game Show this year.
As a huge fan of the original Front Mission 3, I couldn't wait to see how the remake would turn out. Unfortunately, not everything lives up to expectations. From the mech designs and combat animations to the lack of voice acting and outdated visuals, I break down what went wrong and why this remake falls short of the original game’s brilliance.

I played these games at the same years I don't know if you remember monster rancher 2 form ps1, like fm3 the characters were just small face pictures that blink and move lips a bit, really nice arts but the same basic, mr 3 at ps2 did a great evoluiton looks like a real time anime character, just the head but outside a frame hud, the game itself was worst than ps1 version and mr4 give a better upgrade at graphics but forget the art, I had the same bad feeling when saw new fm3re! But a miracle is impossible all square money is for ff7re, neither ff16 had a close care and love!

I 100% agree with the attacks lacking weight, it was the first thing I noticed. FM3 was the peak when it came to how devastating the attacks looked though later games did water it down even my fav in the series FM5 didn't have as meaty attacks as FM3, though they did do a decent job. I recently did a play through of FM 1,3,4 AND 5 on emulators and I missed those brutal shots with the SMG and shotgun. This remake takes the piss though. I feared when the devs eventually got to FM3 they wouldn't do the combat justice and I was right unfortunately.

Game dev here. There's no excuse for the lousy attack animation whatsoever. The technical advancement has gone so far from the PS1 era but those damaged animations look worse than most of the indie games this day. This smells more incompetency from the dev side than anything.

It makes me happy that the consumers and fans of FM3 are not just blindly accepting these failures now and actually complaining, not just me and a few. I wish fans of FM1 and FM2 would've roasted the bad animations of their remakes as well in the past. I'm just hoping Square would redeem this by actually making the 1,2 and 3 remakes themselves. Because me, a big fan of the franchise would actually pay more as long as they are done justice. Edit: and no sirs and madame, the music isn't even remotely good like what others claim. The instruments used in these remakes are just obnoxiously loud and is just all over the place that it doesn't even fit the mood of the song. The Stage End theme 1, they added a brass layer and having it play an octave higher and added a flute in it like wtf? It lost its militaristic mood because of that. Sustained notes and reverbed instruments are made shorter like a saxophonist short on air. Listen to the "City (Japan)" the synth choir instruments on the verses and chorus are changed into some organ synth sht that it does not sound relaxing anymore. I could go on and on the final product, all of this are probably gonna sound like a generic midi ringtone. The music is important on this game because its an integral part on setting the mood of the scenarios happening on it and The original had objectively made it perfect as is. IDK what the developers are smoking. I have no hope for this game. They say its a demo already, not beta not alpha.

They deleted the old trailer, thinking that all the bad comments were from Russians, because we have a lot of fans in this game, they posted a new trailer with music and blocked viewing for Russians, but still they received criticism and negative comments, I really hope that SE will understand these disadvantages and they will do something: expand the budget, delay the release of the game and do something to make the remake worthy of the original

In fact, there was no excuse not to use the High Quality Original Soundtrack. Those Discs Sound Good but they were compressed for the PSone Version. They could have used it as a base or at least if they follow the theme of the 1st and 2nd ones, they would have given us the option to use the Original version. However, I swear on my life that I will create Mods both Graphically and to Restore the original OST when the Video Game comes out.

I really and vehemently disagree with art and portraits opinion. While it was mediocre job at rebrushing them, I am happy they decided to keep original art intact. Portraits are made by Akihiro Yamada, legend. And they are treasure to be preserved. I do agree with wanzers tho. They lost all weight in their movement, and while I can understand change in their looks, it was BECAUSE they were modernised to recent established lore and design. Which is crying shame because they missed opportunity to just label older models old. That way they could just update design to current modern standard as new version etc.

Owning both the FM1 remake and FM2 remake, I have zero expectations for the FM3 remake. I sure wouldn't want voice acting, or another major change like that added, because that would change the entire vibe- _Understandably, I also have no confidence that they'd implement such an addition competently to begin with_ . All I want are some decent graphical updates, a remaster of the OST, and a modicum of effort and care to preserve what made the original so special in the first place. But that's obviously too much to ask for.
@jazztheartist
@jazztheartist 7 часов назад
Same sentiments. I had low expectations for FM3 remake even just after FM1 remake disappointment. The only way to get proper remakes or remasters of these gems is that if Square would actually put the funds and effort to make it themselves as they would probably involve some of the original staff from the original games much like they did to Live A Live Remake.

@@jazztheartist You're absolutely right, they source out projects because they are too lazy to rehash hits they've already made. *That is the equivalent of a classic rock band from the 1970's hiring out a cover-band comprised of novice musicians (who've probably never heard their tracks) to do a tour for them.* Most (or at least some) of the Frontmission team bounced out and went to work at Fromsoft in time for Armored Core V. But I'm not sure if they're still there or what they're up to now. I think Square-Enix's big problem is that they _just aren't_ Squaresoft or Enix anymore- that's why IPs like Frontmission got the disgraceful treatment they did in the first place. I mean, I know that FM1, Gunhazzard and FM2 never came stateside but FM3 and FM4 did. Only for FM5 to get the treatment the old games did. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ For me, FM4 and FM5 were nowhere near as good as FM3, they ditched peak mechanics like pilot damage, pilot eject/stealing wanzers... FM3 had us going all over the world and engaging in a huge global wacky time. I know a point of contention for FM fans is that FM3's cast was really tropey and so on, but that really never bothered me- at least they weren't flat characters. Anyway, to do a full whiplash, FM3 is also my favorite game so I'm sure I'll buy the remake regardless of how it ends up and I'll do it, partly, just to send a message to this Squeenix company, and a bit of the reason is because I can play Frontmission 3 on my PS5 even though emulating the original FM3 on my Miyoo Mini or Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is going to bbe the better experience. *P.S.* *Concerning the OST of FM3* : If you, or anyone else, has not heard of the RU-vid Channel: Whats His Name, you owe it to yourself to checkout his impeccable rendition of the *entire* FM3 soundtrack. Wow. Just look up his Frontmission 3 OST rendition; it's fantastic! *edit* : I'll just include a link to his work - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5jDotT1Egww.htmlsi=U8e3OGvFSxZKDvMV . I have a physical copy CD of the FM3 soundtrack, the company died, because their warehouse burned down. Which makes the album hard to come by- I hope that the remake can do as well as What's His Name has done, they should've just gave him some money to use his labor of love! @@lVl_A_L_B_O_R_O True. FM3 was the pinnacle of the series and the only thing it would've needed is a proper overhaul of the visuals in today's standards but we got a downgrade instead. Its just sad to think about that Square wont even give it a proper treatment because it's not a flagship title and they'd just outsource it to others instead. About the covers by What's his name, I stumbled upon it a few years ago and I acknowledge the passion and effort he put into it. I don't want to sound rude and I'm sorry in advance for it but I really don't like his covers, they sound midi-like. Sustained notes are shortened, and I really don't like his choice of instrumentations on the songs and they sounded like music on TV commercials because of that. I mean no disrespect to him and his dedication is extremely admirable but the cinematic factor is just absent in his covers. The thing about FM3's original soundtrack is it already sounds organic from the get go despite it being digital. It had the perfect reverb amount. I think the only way it could work for rearrangements is to replace the emulated real instruments with actual real instruments like the strings, brass, windpipes and pianos whilst retaining the genuine digital instruments and drums as is. It would've helped if they actually involve Hayato Matsuo and Koji Hayama in these remakes. They would've known what to do with the music. I wish they'd re-release it under square enix music label like Chrono Cross and Trigger OST. Also, yeah, I'm thinking of getting it as well whatever the outcome might be ( I hate myself). I think the only way to get a better product is for fans to collectively ask, beg or perhaps demand even just a remaster or port of these gems from Squeenix. lmao.

I dont mind the lack of voice acting in the slightest personally but I get its a big deal for many, REALLY hope they improve these wonky animations and sound effects. For Voice Acting, it's something expensive to do (even with companies criminally underpaying VAs), and with such a text heavy game, it'd cost a lot. I look to a text-heavy series called the Trails series that due to costs, sometimes has "half"/"partial" voice acting in some scenes due to costs and the sheer amount of text. As for FM3 itself...I've put hundreds of hours into this game since I first got it in 2000, and agree only XCOM/XCOM2 really scratches the itch. I saw these Remake clips and thought "what have they done to you?".

I played FM1 a lot on the original SNES and also tried the remake and was very disappointed. I have no idea why they thought slowing down the pace of animations from quick, smooth, snappy robotic motions into some weird slow sloggish animations was a good idea. The fact that they replaced the original sharp sounds of menus and the mechanical SE to something completely different (not even a remaster attempt) was very confusing and the new sounds are worse in every way. They even didn't have the "Thank you" from buying at the shop which is kind of iconic. When you launch the Donkey Missile and impact with it in the original game, it has such an amazing feel with devastating impact through the sounds and flashes, and everything in FM1R felt lacking comparatively. Looking at the footage, while I do see some parts improved from 1R and 2R, it still looks like a far stride from what the original was.

Seems to be that the recent demo has opened many anticipating paying customers' eyes to the horror show of each of their fears becoming realized concerning the remake of FM3. After going through forums and video comment sections of various outlets, it seems that the culmination of issues that customers-in-waiting require ample immediate remediation are as follows: 1. Dialogue text sound existence, the fact that it exists is problematic to countless demo watchers. 2a. Combat choreography: character model fall animations do not seem to exist aside from a quick fall back and disintegration which lacks the authentic impacts for the action momentum. 2b. Screen choreography: character models are not provided the optimized camera angles, rotations, ques from moment to moment for camera transitions in an action sequence. 2c. Impact: Individual shots and swings no longer have any noticeable flinching, sway, recoil, and no FM3-famous explosive gunshots as per the machine guns, shotguns and other armaments for wanzers. 2d. Weight of force: No noticeable appreciation for weight of a wanzers and it's impacts on terrain or in combat, not even an adjustment to have different weight classes was implemented. All seems weightless. 3. Animations: No bracing for hip fire and an over-stiff gunfire animation was used that caused most gamers watching the demo to panic and fear the worst for the game, a bad indicator for sales. Character models seemed to lack not only in combat animation but in nuances noticed by various players that gave the game a more bland presentation overall. 4. Sound: footsteps of wanzers were not very noticeable and seemed bizarrely soft. Again, this reflects poor realization of physics concerning weight. Conclusion: players/would-be players are currently UNINTERESTED in this remake due to each of these glaring faults. Other faults do exist and were noted, but strict oversight over dev team to fix these main issues carefully will retain value and customers. Various have already said this. It is truly annoying. Topping the list for players is ... typing sound existence, ... Despicably bad animations, ... Horrendously bad defeat sequences and animations, ... No force of impact in combat, not even the traditional FM3 exploding gunshots, ... No flinching character models, ... Combat camera choreography is practically non-existent, ... Character portraits were not changed to be more cool, ... Combat sounds are super soft. But for a more positive outlook, perhaps certain things can be added if they also fix all that mess. And this is going to be more of a non-critical suggestion section below to add into the game: When a player finishes the last level and does the final game save, they should be able to.... 1. Keep all parts and wanzers they themselves check in a check-box list and the rest are automatically sold. 2. They unlock a cheat menu that includes a toggle option for ZERO weight on all parts. 3. Player unlocks toggle that changes each character's portrait image to newer much more modified variants (up to 2 or 3 alternatives and they can be individually set on or off per character previously encountered). 4. Unlocks a new game mode called "Multiplayer" to go online or local to contend against other player wanzers. 4a. Players can choose in Multiplayer to select a map and fight as a guest main character using their own custom wanzers against another player, each with the ability to field 1-4 units. 4b. Players can choose a Multiplayer mode that enables usage of their own super units or unique appearance units. 5. Unlocks the ability to go through a new playthrough and KEEP super units, unique appearance units and vehicles. 6. Unlocks a quadrupled vehicle roster with many slots. 7. Unlocks leaderboards with stats like playthroughs, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, max skill ranks, skills unlocked, Wanzers types acquired, etc. 8. Unlocks an online "Pilot's Gallery" found in Leaderboards consisting of Wanzer builds that can be viewed if another player clicks on your profile and selects "Pilot's Gallery." 9. New weapon able to be earned in new playthrough that is a beam machinegun. Also, a sword that is a hilt exuding intense fire - a pure fire sword! And a beam-based melee weapon like a beam tonfa or something.

FM3 Remake is definitely not made for any FM fans as it's objectively the worst version between the original PS1 release and the Remake. The main issue is the devs pretty much imported the assets from the previous Remake games and cobbled up everything else fore FM3 Remake making everything you mentioned completely miss the mark like Wanzer models, idle stance, battle stance and etc. All the battle animations are wrong because they're based off FM 1st Remake and FM2 Remake's quick and emotionless/weightless battles. Absolutely agree with the lack of voice overs being really disappointing, this is probably one of the first Front Mission games to veer off off course as most of the party are not military professionals but a rag tag bunch of civilians so having VOs would have been my number 1 suggestion for this remake...The plot is so sooo Gundam (ZZ)-like too!

What's worse about the melee is that in OGFM3, FM4 and FM5 you can see the wanzers full send their strikes. It makes sense in context too, the heavier and more power a wanzer has ups the damage of melee.

IMO, there's a bit of irony in that Kazuki's victory animation actually feels a bit weightier compared to the original cause we get a bit of recoiling and inertia from the Wanzer moving (ie the Wanzer's frame shaking slightly when it stomped forward and spread its arms out), yet none of this weightiness and inertia is present in any of the more common combat animations. Almost seems like the animations are works-in-progress Even Ryogo's victory animation looks incomplete, he doesn't turn his gun sideways and upside-down like a gangster like he does in the original game.

I dunno what the remake's design looks like. 4:50 Man, what is that bitch slap? Where's the punch? 5:35 That walking animation looks awfully slow. 5:45 That punching animation feels... so floaty. Funny thing is this remake isn't developed by Square but some polish guys called Forever Entertainment which is notoriously infamous for making bad remakes. Squeenix themselves would just remaster it altogether by adding a fresh coat of paint but retaining the UI and gameplay much like Saga and Chrono Cross remasters or putting effort and money by Remaking it altogether like Live A Live or Trials of Mana. It's just between those two. This remake is just blasphemy and downgrade to from the original

The OG is as perfect as it was, and still is. Just rework the visual and smoothen things up and you'd get an actual upgrade instead of this embarrassment. That SMG shooting stance, and the awkward melee slap is probably the most ridiculous thing in this whole demo. C'mon devs, you know you can do this right...

Whatever the Brigandine on Switch is called is pretty cool. I love the games where you conquer a map and defend bases, though in Brigandine I don't think I ever once lost a base, which is disappointing. Very short, but if you see it like a board game you replay a number of times it's pretty cool. I remember thinking the PS1 version was nothing special but I may have been put off by the hex grid and not given it a real chance. Switch one is really cool.

@@anonamatron [very long reply, but I've included a lot of information about Runersia that I think you'd like, including a way to increase the difficulty of the main game(not by limiting yourself, an inclusion in the games last patch) and the game's challenge mode.] Both games have the same kind of map design in and out of battle, the only difference is the balance. The developers that made the new game didn't seem to understand the reason for lower and high level knights, because if your characters are higher level and a higher class, the lower level enemies just really stand no chance. Levels make a huge difference on Brigandine The Legend of Runersia, where on the original PS1 version, they do matter, but the game is more balanced where lower levels are still viable. On the original game, you're also probably not going to actually lose any bases, or atleast it being very rare that you do, but enemies do attack more often and because the better balance, even lower level enemies and monsters will still put up a fight. There's a few things I don't like about the class system in Runersia, but overall I do think human classes are better because they have a lot of unique ways that they battle. Berserkers and lancers for example can use the spin attack to attack surrounding enemies with 100% hit percent, the monks can attack and knock enemies back, the thief can attack at a range and pull enemies towards them. The original game, the classes only have, an attack, a two or three space throwing attack, or an optional critical hit attack with lower accuracy(on GE only.) Plus whatever magic spells they may have. That being said, knights in the original and GE especialllly due to the balance are not nearly as powerful as the knights on Runersia. They are just as powerful as one of your monsters and by that, they are just as weak as any one of your monsters, meaning that they can go down pretty quickly, so you're more defensive towards your knights rather than being as offensive as you'll use them on Runersia since losing your knight means you lose all their monsters when they're forced to retreat. I'd rate Runersia an 8/10 because of the balance issues, while I'd rate the original Brigandine a 10/10. It's not perfect, nothing is, except Tetris, I can point out some issues on the original Brigandine but these are not stand out issues and only in certain maps, certain monsters. Since you did bring up that you own Runersia though. Try out Runersia's challenge mode. This is a brand new feature on Runersia. It doesn't exist on the original game or GE. Challenge mode allows you to choose 10 knights, a ruler and nine knights you've unlocked through all countries. You start in a single city on the map, all of the other cities are owned by the other countries. Each time you hit a goal, all of the enemies levels increase. So the first goal is to own four bases, so once acquiring two more, the enemies levels will then be a minimum of two across the board. The first battle is going to be relatively hard because everyone is on level one, the battles afterwards are a bit easier, but once the enemies levels start increasing, the second half of the game becomes much more difficult, especially if your monsters keep dying. When you have to get new level 1 monsters and enemies start on level 12, it's going to be extremely difficult to even finish battles without monsters dying. At the very end, all enemy monsters are on level 30. So this challenge mode unlike the main game can be lost. You basically have to use units to recruit other units while using other units to take over bases, etc. As you get new units you can start now using those new units to defend or take over other bases. So it definitely adds a lot more difficulty, and the best thing about it is that it shows just how much depth the Brigandine games have. Even more so than the original. Since all characters start on level 1, you now really get to take advantage of cross classing. On the original Brigandine you get to take advantage of this with the low level characters as well, but on the challenge mode, everyone starts on level 1, so you can take advantage of cross classing with literally every single character in your party. My favorite class in Brigandine the Legend of Runersia is the lancer, the royal guard actually which is the last class. However, you can start this class off as a dancer/assassin. Once getting to level 6, the dancer class is mastered and anything the dancer has that can be carried over will then be carried over to the lancer. After the lancer is mastered, you move onto the second dancer class, and then master that, all spells and skills will be carried over, and then your royal guard will be able to move, attack, and then move again, have higher critical hit chance, have higher evasion, as well as the skills and attacks the royal guard has. Another great cross class on Runersia is starting as a cleric. Cleric's have a medium amount of HP and a medium amount of MP. When mastering the cleric, you can change to a lancer, you now have a high defense, high attack class, with recovery magic. Once you master the lancer, you change to the healer class, and then change to the templar. You now have a high attack and high defense character that can use spin attacks and has healing, area heal, etc. Your HP, is probably only around 100 less than it would be if you started with a lancer and there are plenty of clerics that have decent attack/agility stats. The final two cross classes are both magic and both cross classing with the cleric. The first one is an enchantress/cleric. You may want to choose the base class as an enchantress so they have more MP and intelligence but using the enchantress and mastering them first makes it easier to use the cleric as both a back line magic user as well as a healing support. The next one is a bit more difficult to level up, but they are imo a better class once you level them up and that's the cleric/bard The reason for this is they have the support skills from the bard(which are only usable as a bard) they have the buffs and debuffs of the bard, and they do gain access to thunder, the most powerful of the single target three hex range attack spells. Using the bard abilities to increase an allies stats does so for several turns, meaning that one ally is going to be dealing higher damage, getting less damage each attack. You can also give up the amazing recovery support from enchantress/cleric if you want to build an enchantress/bard for the attack/buff support. So the optional challenge mode is the best thing about Runersia that the original game doesn't have. There is one last thing with Runersia, which was added in a patch when the PS4 version released. You can add revival stones per month to every country. Multiple revival stones. Revival stones will allow any dead monster within the past 50 monsters, to be revived after death. This means that if you max out the amount of revival stones that are given to each country every month, each country will be able to revive their most powerful monsters and since most enemy countries don't attack, the ones that you aren't actively attacking will just stock pile these stones and have an endless inventory by the time you get to them. They'll be able to continue to battle with their most powerful units in every single battle, that would actually significantly increase the difficulty of the main game instead of making the game easy after the first few initial battles against those countries.

Square-Enix created 2 of the Best RPGs of All Time in Their Own Concepts, games that once you experience them nothing comes close to what they offer. Final Fantasy XII (Original PS2) is the Most Colorful, Beautiful, Deep and Above All Things FREE Turn-Based RPG Game ever created and that today Nothing and Nobody has been able to imitate. The "Zodiac" Versions were a misconception that was born by people who didn't play the Video Game and who "To Nobody's Surprise" continued without playing it, limiting and changing the Lore of the Game for a Childish criticism of what they Asked Final Fantasy to be... X again. Front Mission 3 is the Definitive Tactical Mecha Game, nothing is the same, It has everything and the only thing missing to be consecrated as the Definitive of All Time are: Better Graphics and Quality of Life Mechanics that came with 4, a game that if they added the Internet Mechanics of 3 and the Wanzer Robbery System from the same would be the 2nd best Front Mission by far.

But honestly, the mentioned Kriegsfront Tactics will likely make Front Mission obsolete. Absolutely agree with you in all aspects. I also very like the original FM3 and I will buy this one. Because I also want to receive remake of FM4, but… how disappointing looks animations! And portraits! I’n a concept artist in game industry and to me such things as portraits is very important! But in original portrait we can see incredible talent of the artists who in few pixels put awesome portraits! And in remake … it looks much less professional because of just processing old portraits. And it’s in time when possible to create 2D, that will look like a 2D and will be identical in style, but just in 3D with hand painted textures. My wife doing so on her working project. So I think we all should buy it, but we all should write about this under official videos and make videos about it as you do. And hope that developers will hear us and will improve some aspects of the 3rd pars (as animation, models and voice acting) and next part they will do in a completely new level. I wish to hope. To be true even 3D cool portraits possible to add in a free update. But for this that should hire VERY talented 3D artists! With bad 3D portraits it will look only much worthier!
