Front of mirror chimpanzee slap dance to scare intruders infiltrated their domain (their own images)

Front of a mirror, each chimpanzee effectively recognizes his neighbour among the reflections, he also notices the presence of a stranger he has never met : his own image he does not know. Why is he here?
In an attempt to scare away this stranger, this chimpanzee shows his large build, in standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair and shows his strength with heavy slaps with his hands on the ground . His reflection adopting the same behaviours, despite the cries of support from other members of the group sitting near the mirror, he hesitates to fight this unknown congener. To feel stronger, nothing is better than a tree branch in hand, but the opponent (the reflection) instantly responds to these attitudes with identical behaviors!. The properties of the mirror are very difficult to understand by these chimpanzees who, unlike humans, did not learn mirror practice as children with their mother as a teacher able to talk.

Devant un miroir, chaque chimpanzé reconnaît effectivement son voisin parmi les reflets. Il remarque aussi la présence d'un étranger qu'il n'a jamais rencontré : sa propre image, qu'il ne connaît pas. Qu'est-ce qu'il fait là ?
Pour tenter de faire fuir cet étranger, ce chimpanzé montre sa grande carrure, en se mettant en position bipède, en étirant les bras, en hérissant le poil et pour montrer sa force en tapant fort avec ses mains sur le sol. Son reflet dans le miroir adopte immédiatement, comme par un pur hasard, les mêmes comportements. Malgré les cris de soutien des autres membres du groupe assis en arrière-plan du miroir, il hésite à combattre ce congénère inconnu. Pour se sentir plus fort, rien de mieux qu'une branche d'arbre en main, mais l'adversaire (le reflet) répond instantanément avec un comportement identique !
Les propriétés du miroir sont très difficiles à comprendre par ces chimpanzés qui, contrairement aux humains, n'ont pas fait leur apprentissage au miroir dans leur enfance sous les yeux d'une mère connaissant les miroirs et capable de rassurer par la parole.
