Come and enjoy the wonderfully musical sounds of vintage London Transport 1937 AEC Regent / LPTB STL2377 (EGO 426) as we continue our long journey on traditional service 65 (Leatherhead-Kingston).
The richness of musical gearbox notes is especially evident in 2nd and 3rd gears.
The STL class was the predecessor of London's famous RT bus and this is a rare survivor. Its pre-select gearbox notes are very similar to the RT, although for the driver, the gear change lever is floor-mounted rather than steering column mounted as on RTs.
The engine is the prewar AEC 7.7 unit, which contrasts to the more powerful 9.6 litre unit used in the RT family, but as you can see here, performance is remarkably good - and wholly rattle-free, unlike today's buses.

Thank you - that’s very kind of you to say. A very rare opportunity to ride this survivor of a very large London bus class.

I remember boarding many an RT at the 'Duke of Buckingham' (where this video starts) back in the 1970s on the 65/71 routes, as I had some friends who lived nearby. There was none of that jiggery-pokery in the roadway (or 20mph limits) back then! Not old enough to remember STLs on that route, though....... :)

Going to school on the 124 bus in the 1960s - such an evocative sound.

Thanks for this posting, John. Prewar bus interior sound recordings are fairly rare. Looking forward to more!

The AEC engine and preselector box is a magic combination. Thank you for the post. The route starts in Villiers Road, Kingston heading south down Lingfield Avenue, Beaufort Road and Maple Road before turning into Claremont Road, Surbiton before passsing the clock tower. A right at the roundabout takes the route into Victoria Road, left into Brighton Road and then follows the A243 to just beyond the A3 Hook Junction after Elm Croft Drive where the video ends.

Had those at Brentwood in the 50’s 60’s Central and County Area, and on Green Line. Upstairs was thick with smoke, downstairs was frozen in the winter.

They ,like the RT were years ahead of their time,as the provincial companies were still using Crash box vehicles, although London Transport had some ST and LT crash box types.

The sound of music. And AEC's low geared steering, took some birling at junctions, aye, the tickover is just a wee bit slow to work with a fluid flywheel. Driver is making a good job of gearchanges.

Not Leyland. This bus dates from the 1930s, and AEC were not absorbed into Leyland until the 1960s.
