Enjoy the wonderfully musical sounds of vintage London Transport 1937 AEC Regent / LPTB STL2377 (EGO 426) as we continue the atmospheric journey on traditional service 65 (Leatherhead-Kingston).
The richness of musical gearbox notes is especially evident in 2nd and 3rd gears.
The STL class was the predecessor of London's famous RT bus and this is a rare survivor. Its pre-select gearbox notes are very similar to the RT, although for the driver, the gear change lever is floor-mounted rather than steering column mounted as on RTs.
The engine is the prewar AEC 7.7 unit, which contrasts to the more powerful 9.6 litre unit used in the RT family, but as you can see here, performance is remarkably good - and wholly rattle-free, unlike today's buses.

When these buses were in operation all over London and the surrounds, I never heard any speak of the engine noise, apart from me and my brother I guess it was common place that most of the AEC and older vehicles just sounded very distinctive. Now most buses trucks don't sound like this and the old sound brings back memories. Another sound I loved was the old tube trains, the 1960 stock running on the end of the central line . They had a nice whining sound as they pulled away.

Great video, love the mechanical preselector box and 7.7 AEC engine. I like to trace the route and this starts in Victoria Road, Surbiton just before turning into Claremont Road and then passing Surbiton clock tower. Then it's Maple Road, Beaufort Road, Lingfield Avenue and Villiers Road. The bus turns right into Hawks Road and immediately left into Albert Road and then left into London Road, Kingston. On to Fairfield North then Wheatfield Way before turning right into Ashdown Road, left into Eden Street, left into Brook Street and left into Wheatfield Way. A right turn into Orchard Road then Fairfield South takes us back to the Villiers Road junction, Kingston. Not too tedious I hope but it makes the video more interesting and enjoyable. Thank you.

That takes me back to my school days in Romford, on the 247a and 252 routes- the drone when idling, and the jerk just before the driver moves off.

You can’t beat a straight 6 non turbo-charged AEC Diesel engine😇

Would you have any objection if I were to use fragments of the audio from this and other of your videos as sound effects in a free, open-source non-commercial computer game called Simutrans? This is a good recording of a pre-war AEC oil engined 'bus. I should happily credit you, of course.

Is that piston slap I hear or noisy injectors?
