Continuing my exclusive ride for filming aboard pleasant and musical Crosville 1968 Bristol RELL6G/ECW ERG53 (UFM 53F) as we head uphill a couple of times through the narrow streets of the historic city of Colchester in Essex, with rich rasping exhaust notes echoing off surrounding buildings rather pleasantly!
With grateful thanks to the Colne Estuary Preservation Group's Chris Sampson, the owner of this fine vehicle, for the ride to film this vehicle for you.

Excellent quality film thank you - love that engine & exhaust! The bus didn't look to old to me - I thought it was in service for a while, then it dawned on me why he never stopped for passengers.........

Gardner so much nicer than those noisy Leylands. Smoother.

Smoother is quite right the 8 cylinder version of that engine the 8LXB/C/CT(not horizontal) you could stand a 2 pence piece on its end on the cylinder heads and it wouldn't topple over when ticking over, now that's quality.

what a cracking motor it is too. credit to Mr Sampson - especially on his favourite bit of Colchester tarmac for ERG - St Johns Street!

This bus's sister, ERG52, is preserved, based at the Wirral Transport Museum.

Not as lovely as a Leyland 680!

Everyone has an opinion but as an operator the Gardner engine would last more than twice as long as a Leyland be more reliable and give around an extra 4 to 5 miles per gallon but the Leyland 680 was a good diesel engine, we've lost our way when it comes to making quality diesel engines.

My late grandad drove these when I was a wee nipper in the 70’s. He claimed the Leyland engines were ‘flying machines’ !
