Here's another DIY tutorial. This time on how to replace the front struts on a 2012 Honda Odyssey. The instructions should be the same for other 4th generation Odysseys (and I’m told it’s the same for the Honday Pilot as well).
Here's a great price on both "quick struts" (full assembly with springs and everything): amzn.to/2eX3ioN I highly recommend getting the quick struts, as it will make the job 100 times easier and the price on these is really good compared to the stealership.
Check out my other tutorial on how to replace the rear shocks here: • Rear Shock Replacement...

from the Honda service manual...the three flange nuts at top of strut should be torqued to 44 lbft. Also the left and the right strut assembly are different. There is also a direction the top of the assembly should face (toward the front) per the service manual. I can't attach the picture but the little nub must face front. Pg 18-23 of service manual. I bought the CD of that contains the entire manual for $80 off ebay....good to have for situations like this.

Next time loosen the three nuts on top before you do the bottom to prevent the strut dropping on any of the lines and damaging it, it will also help if you put a jack underneath to control downward motion. My 2 cents.

You may add "Honda Pilot" in your title as the layout/process is identical. My only question was on taking off the tray that covers the top strut mount bolts and your video answered that for me. There is ZERO videos for doing struts on the Honda Pilot so adding that to your title will help some folks. Thanks for making the video!

Isn’t there a little door to get access to the top strut nuts without removing the cowl?

No need to remove the plastic and wipers... There are access ports for the top strut nuts. You just need to pry open the rectangular covers...

Dude, very helpful, did mine today. I had to actually cut out and replace the sway bar links because that first “hardest” bolt you remove would NOT budge. I tried breaker bars, torch, penetrating oil - you name it. If you spend more than 20 minutes trying to get that thing out just spend the $40 on new sway bar links. I wasted two hours on that damn thing. And no; I wasn’t twisting it the wrong way.

Nice job. Rusted nuts suck for sure. Typically, I mix up 50% ATF and 50% Acetone and stick it in an oiler. Then I use my butane torch, heat up the threaded areas, and squirt that mixture on the threads. Best rust dissolver ever discovered...and it is cheap. Anyway, the video really helped out. but I let the dogbone fall out of the gearbox broach. Took an hour to find it again and reinsert it..🤬🤬 Thanks a lot!

Hi, when I pulled the hub out of the strut at 4:23 it leaned back just as far as yours, but the inner CV joint rollers came out of the housing and now I can't get it back in. Why did this happen and how do I get the rollers back in the housing so that I can reattach the hub to the new strut.
@ipleedafif8033
@ipleedafif8033 5 лет назад
You might also want to remove the abs sensor from the hub just in case. It's just a 10mm bolt. Those wires are fragile.

For the noise in low speed when you turn .. you can apply the bulletin service ... just add lube under the boot ... all you need just jack up the car and apply lube under the suspensions boot ... you don’t even need to remove the wheel ... but great Video thank you

That was the first thing I tried. Didn’t work. It ended up being the struts needing to be replaced that did the trick.

I just replaced the front strut assemblies on my 2011 Odyssey (79k mi) this morning. My shop quoted me $1130 for this job. I spent about $182 on struts from RockAuto and saved myself over $900. It took me about 4 1/2 hrs to complete and trying to get the new struts into place was by far the hardest part of this job. I don't see how one person could install the new strut while holding the knuckle in place so the axle doesn't come out of the trans. Thanks for your vid. (07/06/23)

0:30 There's a TSB for that noise, that's pretty easy to do and it fixed the issue for me. Apply Shin-Etsu grease on a specific point on the strut, and check that your strut mount bolts are tight.

@@ExtremeDIY Gotcha, thanks for the reply! I did it a few years ago and it worked great, guess I just got lucky. I had no idea how a wee bit o' grease was going to fix anything, but it did! Sadly now the ride on my 2011 is getting a bit too spongy so replacing shocks all around, and just popped into your video to get the lay of the land. No rust here so not the worst job ever. Thanks for the video! Question, I see you link in the video description for Amazon quick struts...are these the ones that you used or did you use the OEM ones? You mentioned in the video that Honda fixed the noise issue...so, not sure if you used OEM ones or the Amazon linked ones? Thanks again!
@ExtremeDIY
@ExtremeDIY 7 лет назад
I purchased them from my local stealership, but if I did it over, I'd get them from Amazon and save a little money, especially since it didn't even solve the creaking that I was trying to fix by replacing them. :/

Not positive on the part #, but just FYI - replacing these did NOT fix the creaking. I think it's my CV axles, but haven't replaced them yet to verify. But it does ride a lot nicer. :)

Hey Extreme DIY, we had both front CV Axles replaced yesterday and the creaking is still there, so, I presumed the noise was coming from the Shock assembly, but seems like replacing the shock assembly didn't resolve your creaking either. I'm confused now...

Can you post when you replace the CV axles? My van sounds awful as well. Local shop said it could be struts, CV axles, and steering rack. Reluctant to drop a few $k if it won't fix the issue. Almost ready to just trade it in.
