Thanks for making such a thorough video with clear explanations. I had a difficult time finding a video that explained the differences between the two types of freezers beyond...one has shelves and the other doesn't. Your deeper explanation of the best potential uses for the different designs was very educational and is going to help me a lot in my decision! Keep up the great work!

I like how well you explain to make everything easy to understand and pretty detailed about stuff. I notice this in most of the videos. Because of the details, as in this video, you had mentioned drain line which prompted me for something to check next time I run across a fridge that freezes up. I would have never really considered the differences and your explanation of long term vs multi-use is a great way to consider. Thanks for your videos.

A couple of other pluses. If you ever need to run it off an generator or solar-battery-inverter, the conventional (frosting type) often only pulls 60 or 80 Watts and thus can be run off a quite small system or generator. The frost free types will run off low power until they go into the defrost cycle where they pull 500 or so watts for 10 or so minutes. Of course the best for energy use is a chest type which also has the advantage of have a longer "keep" time as they will hold the contents frozen over a longer period of time if the power were off. It's my experience that the defrost thermostat, the most likely thing to go bad in a frost free, will fail in about 15 yrs, +/- 8 ;-) Good Vid !

We purchased a used Kenmore Upright Freezer 13 years ago. By used I mean it was at least 10-12 years old when we bought. A year and a half ago, the compressor finally gave up on it and how I wish we could just replace the part(s) we need!!! It was fantastic and the temperature control was spot on until it quit. My folks only purchased Kenmore freezers throughout their lives. They purchased their 3rd one after 38 years. Thanks for sharing the info! ~ APRIL LIPKE

My experience is I prefer a regular freezer, If you leave the door open they will both get frost, the good thing about the regular freezer is the frost is visible. With a frost free you can still get a huge build up of glacier ice extremely cold. defrosting the frost free freezer can take ages and you have to take the panel off to do this. Frost free is cheaper to run. Benefits to frost free the balanced circulation of air.

Great video, good explanation. I have a question for you, out auto defrost upright freezer is leaking water on the floor and I was thinking it might be a plugged up drain plug, but I also noticed that the outside of the freezer on both the left side and right side are very warm to the touch, that does NOT seem correct to me, What would cause the outside panels to feel very warm to the touch? Thanks for any help.
@srussiastbs8877
@srussiastbs8877 3 года назад
I believe the answer to your questions are, since the freezer is rejecting heat the walls are warm, this should be normal. also the water inside the air is being frozen so when the unit goes into defrost mode it will melt this ice and it will puddle up near the unit.
@Littleprinceleon
@Littleprinceleon 2 года назад
Isn't that unit getting rid of heat (from the condenser) to the sides? Too much moisture in the air? Too often opening of the door? Normally the water after defrosting should be evaporated by that heat mentioned... For any reason the "water cycle" is unbalanced: is it "leaking" water all year or seasonally?

A Deep Freeze is a manual defrost not auto defrost. Deep freeze is available in both upright and chest type. Auto defrost is great for short term storage. But not for long term storage. Manual defrost is best for long term storage or to keep food fresher.

My Liebherr upright regular(static) freezer cames with separate 6 drawers ( that you can open just one at the time , the one you need) . The regular one (static) in this video has no separate drawers and of course is less efficient and will need to be defrosted more often than the ones with drawers, because everytime you open the front door a lot of cold will flow out downward ) . My Liebherr regular static Upright freezer is still working perfectly after 25 years..... According to my one experience static is far better because no electronic boards and complicated sensors devices in the frost free ones. Just defrost the static regular upraight freezer every 6 months and will last almost forever.......and is more efficient than the frost free ones.....but separate drawers are a must.......

I always felt that feeezer sections on a refrigerator are best for only short term storage...under a month..Standard freezers do a much better job on long term storage...Also standard refrigerators usually only cool the freezer when the refrigerator is working to cool...can have temperature swings because of this...more ice crystals and freezer burn

I have a similar upright freezer. Does your entire coil develop a frost line when you turn it on after a defrost? Mine only ices maybe the 1st 1/3 - 1/2 on the 1st shelf that the capillary tube expands to. I tapped the process tube to check low pressure and it was at roughly 3 psi with 80 degrees inside the freezer. I added a couple of ounces so it's right about 8psi with the inside at 30 degrees (and dropping). I can't tell if I should have a long even frost line or if it's supposed to be this way with only one shelf frosting.

I was hearing people say last year or this year that frozen meat last 1 year to 8 months frozen..... I was like WTF!!!! I did research and multiple sites were showing that number but I know first hand its full of shit. A deep freeze freezer can keep meat for multiple years with hardly any freezer burn. I spent lots of money on sea food but in less than 6 months my new freezer ate that sea food up. When I was young I remember when you would get the screw driver when going to get the meat out of the freezer. Is that the deer from this year or the elk from last year?
