About the visit:
They arrived Duluth MN January 17, 2024 at 15:59 to load fuel at the Cenovus Dock. After fueling they will sail south in the Harbor to the BN-5 dock to load Iron Ore. They pulled into Cenovus at 16:57 and began taking on a short load of fuel. Finished fueling at 18:12, with tug assistance they sailed to the BN dock, arriving there at about 20:58 and began loading ore. They finished loading January 18 at 03:15 and departed BN-5. Out into the lake they went, departing the Superior Entry at 03:38 heading to the Algoma Steel Plant in the "Soo" to deliver the ore.
After discharging the ore, they are coming back to layup at the Elevator M dock in Superior and call it a season.
Info From Boatnerd.com :
The self-unloading lake bulk carrier John J. Boland (the fourth vessel to bear the name of this pioneering Great Lakes ship owner and manager) was built by the Bay Shipbuilding Co., Sturgeon Bay, WI, and launched March 10, 1973 for the American Steamship Co, Buffalo, NY, as Charles E. Wilson.
In January 2000, the Wilson was renamed John J. Boland. That year while at Fraser Shipyards in Superior for lay-up, crews welded the new name on the vessel. The name change followed the sale of the former John J. Boland to Lower Lakes Towing, Port Dover, ON, (now sailing as the Saginaw).
The Boland is powered by twin 3,600 horsepower GM diesel engines, giving her a rated service speed of 13 knots. She is equipped with bow and stern thrusters. Her 22 hatches feed into six holds where she is capable of carrying 33,800 tons at her maximum mid-summer draft of 30 feet seven inches. The stern-mounted self-unloading conveyor system feeds a 250-foot-long boom that can be swung left or right a maximum of 105 degrees.
The Boland was the first of 10 vessels launched (though the second to enter service) for the American Steamship Co. under Title XI of the Merchant Marine Act of 1970 at a cost of $13.7 million. Under this Act, U.S. shipping companies could build or modernize their fleets by receiving guaranteed government financing and tax deferred benefits. The other vessels included in this program were the Roger M. Kyes (now Adam E. Cornelius 4), H. Lee White (2), Sam Laud, St. Clair (2), Belle River (now Walter J. McCarthy Jr.), Buffalo, Indiana Harbor, American Mariner and American Republic.
During the winter of 1997/98, a new Sperry adaptive digital gyroscope steering control system was installed on the Boland. A vessel with very few mishaps, the John J. Boland remains a very active carrier for the American Steamship Co.

Man Paul, it's so nice that you get the chatter between the ship and the tugboats. Makes it so much more interesting. Thanks.

Glad you enjoy it! When it all works, I include. Many times the scanner is garbled with a lot of noise garbage making it unusable.

Nice capture on a cold afternoon, Paul. Were you down at Superior watching them depart onto the lonely lake at 3:30 am. this morning? 😅. As a nice surprise, my calendar was in my mailbox this afternoon. It's a beauty. 👍 I noticed there's no CSL ships. Couldn't you find one with enough paint to make the cut? 🤔😋

I was not up for their departure! I'm happy your calendar came! Thanks for getting 1. As for CSL, not many visits this season, the shots I had were not that good. Maybe next years !

What a workhorse & the tugs, the workhorses of the ice laden Superior. They're going until the ice seals them in. The lake has a solemn beauty to it. God speed to them & hopefully men & ship get some well deserved r& r soon. 🛳⛄🎉

The tugs deserve their own comment. They make it possible all year long for many of the big ships to navigate the canal and harbor, cut through the ice and are beautiful little ships in their own right with friendly capt and crew. Gods blessings on these heroes of the lake. Should be commented right alongside the big guys!❤

Good Good morning, Mr. Paul.. I have a more thoughtful question in the morning. Would they leave the bridge down if a Saltie or laker (chemical ,explosive) lost control and tugs couldn't help ,to save DULUTH harbor from a bad day ?p.s. have yourself a Great day.🍁🙂
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca 8 месяцев назад
I do not believe they would. My guess is a loaded ship would pretty much go right through that span and take it with it.

@@PaulScinocca The Steelton hit the port Robinson bridge at 9 knots and bounced backwards knocking the bridge over though. What a thousand footer would do to your bridge which is better structurally built all bets are off.🍁🙂
