This is a beautiful story. It is unfortunate, however, that her coffin was cracked open and now her preservation has ended. But wonderful that her cherub-like photo was immortalized on the headstone.
My grandmother was born in 1880 said Mothers in those days often spoke of their first children (family) and second children (family) as they lost so many to diseases we consider minor today. She said she was so blessed because she was born at a time that all of her 8 children lived to be adults.
What a beautiful story and such a gorgeous wee girl.Sad that her coffin was opened and she put into an ordinary one so now all the years she was preserved was wasted.
I saw a news report that said Edith was placed in her original coffin which was then placed in a lavender lined wooden casket. She was buried in a cemetery not far from the mass grave to which the bodies from the old Odd Fellows cemetery were moved.
@@Nonie_Jay wish people would leave well enough alone. Why take her hair just let the body be it’s fascinating enough that she was still persevered and viewable do we really need to prod around?
I find the artists rendition of her to be absolutely beautiful. I also find the actual state of her preservation to be absolutely beautiful. She was left behind by accident and she was found in an absolutely amazing state also by accident. Despite all of the time and moving and building around her, her body remained virtually untouched. She just as easily could have been completely destroyed or never found at all. I think it’s absolutely amazing that she was given a name again and a final place to rest as well.
This story is just amazing. All the work that went into identifying this little girl and laying her to rest again....no one could have told this story better.
@@DanaTheInsane Yes and that really bugs me. Like why was it done? Her actual state of preservation was pretty incredible, no need to pretend she looks even more like airbrushed Precious Moments than a real child sleeping, LOL!!
@@joecommie4890 Wow even the comments on this video are getting "airbrushed." --Note that the Dana comment I replied to is no longer here, but that's just one of many. So far it appears that the name of the search engine that rhymes with 'frugal' causes a flag, but I also had one of my replies deleted that didn't include that word, nor any curse words, etc. Just as weird: If you DO search her name and 'real photo', it is even harder to find than it was last night when I first watched this video. Now most of the results are the El Fake-o and even pictures of Rodalia Lombardo in Italy (who is truly amazing). But yeah, the real one of Edith is almost logarithm'ed out of existence now.
@@audreymuzingo933 I used an alternative search engine and the real picture came up straightaway, albeit along with multiple copies of the photoshopped one. I don't find g***le that reliable these days.
Oh my goodness, I’ve never heard of such a coffin, and little Edith’s story was incredibly moving. The verse on her headstone was particularly apt “I once was lost, and now I am found” . Amazing Grace indeed!! The respect and dedication to finding out who this little girl was just shows there is a lot of humanity in the world. The people involved in the Miranda Eve project deserved all the recognition and praise for making sure Edith is remembered forever 😇
The respect would have been to leave the cemetery where it was. It's the ultimate disrespect to do what was done to all who were disturbed in their " final" resting place.
Impressive and sad tale, Ron. The baby was a gorgeous little gal, but given the circumstances of her illness and death; it is reasonable. As a librarian/history teacher, I was incredibly impressed by the perseverance and research of the folks involved in identifying her and her descendants. Great video, Ron. You really do your homework. Thank you for sharing Edith’s story. Blessings and stay safe💜🙏🏾😇
I think it is terrible to move a cemetery like that. What a mess! Leave them be. This story is a real tear jerker. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Beautiful capture, she’s peacefully resting unbothered. This is the best that can be done for her. Sweet dreams, you’re in heaven while your body rests.
She was such a beautiful little girl. The heartache & grief her parents must have felt when she passed had to be deep. Her little body was lost to the earth but she was never lost to God. She's in heaven resting in complete peace forever.
I hope she rests in peace, so very tragic when someone so young dies. just horrible but we don't live in the middle ages anymore, there's no magic man in the sky.
@@8-bitsteve500 Thankfully we don't live still in the times of the dark ages. There's plenty of proof that God does indeed exist. Just looking at nature, our dna among other things smacks of intelligent design. The bible says that the life is in the blood. How did people thousands of years ago know that? How did they know that the nation of Israel would be created in 1 day or that we would have one world religion, economy & govt or that we'd have a cashless society? The NWO is indeed happening now & we're about to go digital world wide & the Pope has been working hard to join all religions as one. Many leaders have for years been wanting & calling for a one world govt. Just some things for you to think on. The bible has never been wrong on any of its prophecies & many of the stories in the bible have been shown to be true through archeology. The bible told us what kind of society & traits people would have in the days we are living. Bible is spot on. Just some things for you to think about.
From viewer Lisa Lewis: The wood coffin in the photo when the reinterred her is an outer vessel - they reburied her in the fisk one inside of the wood one. On the rendition of a little Edith, I chose to not include the actual picture in my design; to stay with the context of the story, keeping it tasteful.
Sorry 😞 I didn't know that but also you said that they opened up the child glass case to take the sample. It would have destroyed the seal . Plus she was so beautiful to look at her 😍 bit like a holy relic you know? Anyway xx
What a beautiful little girl. Thank you for clearing that up. I watched this yesterday and it bothered me that they messed with her. It didn’t matter how she died in my opinion, I believe she should have been left alone. This beautiful soul has probably decomposed now, and the wishes of her family should still have remained. RIP 💜
@@newlam7958 And minimizing the mold that was first noticed. Unfortunately, when the coffin opened and the seal breached, the poor child soon was in a sorry state. I've seen those pictures. If she had been able to get buried again right away nobody would have noticed, but the family in whose garage Edith was found were told that THEY would have to bear the cost of getting another grave and re-burying her-- over $8K at the time (can't imagine what it might be now.) They were lucky that the Garden of Innocence folks took an interest and helped out. By then poor Edith had been left in the garage with her broken-sealed iron casket for at least 2 weeks during a warm weather spell. She did come from a wealthy family, obviously. Her parents were Horatio Nelson Cook (wealthy parents naming sons after Admiral Nelson was a fad for years after Trafalgar) and Edith Scooffy Cook (her name was Anglicized from Greek.) Horatio founded the H.N. Cook Belting Company. The Scooffy patriarch, Peter, was a successful merchant. Deadly infections and syndromes in children devastated even the rich in those days before modern pediatric care was developed. By the time the cemetery was moved, both parents were gone and probably the siblings thought the whole business would be taken care of at the new cemetery. Perhaps they didn't even remember they had that sister, who had died so long ago. Who can say? Edith's younger sister Ethel, born after the older sister's death, became a well-known socialite with some scandals in her life. Edith's brother Milton (just 2 years older) was the grandfather of Peter Cook who gave the DNA sample; he's apparently the last of the family line.
Precious story…This reminds me of a story even though it’s different, but is about my Grandmothers cousin who died as a child, she was not embalmed I guess due to the cost, I heard this story over and over growing up. My Grandmother told me the coffin was made of metal and had a glass top. She told me when her mother took her up to look at her cousin her cousin opened her eyes and she saw her breath on the glass,This was in 1918, So that had to be a Fisk coffin I thought you would find this interesting…Thank you Ron for this beautiful story. keep bring us these awesome stories…God Bless…
Oh my goodness, little Edith is so remarkably gorgeous! I nearly burst into tears at the thought of her not being able to live into adult her with her rosy cheeks and beautiful hair. She would have been a truly stunning woman. Rest well Edith
There are quite a few unusual burials in the south. I used to go down to Alabama each summer to visit relatives. We went to a cemetary there where a man was burried in an above ground crypt on his bed. It origionally had small windows at his request but either vandals or grave robbers had broken them so they were cemented shut. Never understood why anyone would disturb a grave in that manner. I suspect by opening that little girls coffin she will now decay. Don't think they should have done that.
From what I understood they opened it to get dna to identify her? You are correct, upon exposure to the air the decay would have begun very very rapidly. I wonder if they resealed afterwards and left her undisturbed in the fysk coffin. I hope they did this quickly, removing only the strand of hair and then quickly resealing and I hope that she was left in her original coffin and that that coffin was placed inside the new wooden one seen in the video. If you have these details I'm sure many of us would appreciate an update.
@@connielamb8159 I was hoping the same thing. I cannot imagine that they would put her perfectly preserved body in a regular wood coffin. That would would be unthinkable. I am assuming that they resealed her coffin and put it inside the wood one like you suggested they might have. I really wish they had not opened it.
Very interesting story. Too bad that they re buried her in a modern casket. On the positive side, someone could have preserved her and but her in a museum.
This child's photo was just angelic. How her mother and father must of missed her. Cherished so much by placing her in this wonderful eternal resting bed. Thank all involved in giving her the dignity in reinterning her she so deserved after being long forgotten. Lynn, Dodge City, KS
What beautiful story, not her being left there at the old cemetery but being found and taken to another resting place, my goodness she was so pretty, RIP Edith, bless your soul. Thank you so much for sharing this video, very interesting and what a beautiful coffin, never easy with children to say the least.
I remember this story when it happened. I am so glad that they were able to find out more information as to her real name and her living ancestor! I’m glad she had a proper burial. Beautiful little girl. Thank you for providing us with this story and doing the investigative work. I was glad to see the finale of what happened in this case.
Thank you for telling Edith's story I bet she is over the moon to know how much people care and finding a family member will definitely subscribe to your channel much love from the uk ❤️
I wish people wouldn’t move grave yards. We the living have no right to disturb the final resting place of those who have passed before us by moving them. They were here first. Nevertheless, what amazing research was done to determine her identity. And bless all of those who worked so hard to honor her life again with a beautiful burial and head stone. This was very touching. Thank you for sharing. You were very respectful of this precious child’s story and her memory.
Wendy even though it's sad they have to be moved it's often necessary at times and it's always done with dignity and respect,There will always be a service of prayers and I'm sure little Edith was very thankful she wasn't forgotten bless her little heart may she now R I P sweet angel xx
there shouldn't be mass graveyards at all actually. its a waste of space and could be put on people's properties instead of taking up space in the world.
Wow! Great work for all involved for finding the name of this sweet little girl! All loses are devastating however, the loss of a child is unthinkable. What would have been. As always, thank you so much Ron for keeping the name, memories alive of the forgotten!
I just don't understand why they had to make the silly Precious Moments airbrushed-looking image to depict her state of preservation. If you see the real photos, no she didn't look like an angel with rosy cheeks at all, but the actual relative lack of decay is amazing.
@@angels356 Yes on the search engine that rhymes with 'frugal' (I found that typing the actual g-word gets the comment deleted here). For some bizarre reason the creator of this video seems to REALLY want people to think that's a real photograph.
@@angels356 Correct. But the fact that she even still has flesh and skin on her bones is very unusual for a body that has been dead for so long! I just don't understand why someone decided to paint a fake picture, when the real one is pretty impressive already. Now, if you want to see a VERY well-preserved little girl, look at Rosalia Lombardo. She died at age 2 just like Edith, but in Italy, in 1920 I believe. Her father had her put in a similar kind of coffin and she looks very much like a sleeping angel.
Another heartening story from a time gone by, and a beautiful little girl. The story, the music and pictures brought it all together. Love these stories.
Thank you to all of those who work so diligently on finding this little girls name and history and thank you Ron for bringing it to us she will not be forgotten.
I think it’s nice that a living relative was found and obviously wonderful that she was identified. It is just sad that the seal had to be broken and now she will decay.
My family goes back to 1840s in San Francisco. My grandmother was 10 yrs in the 1906 earthquake. One of the horrible things from that was coffins "popped" up when the earth split open. That's when San Francisco outlawed cemeteries in the city and bought/created Colma just for that. Colma originally was nothing but cemeteries. My family has one of the original plots there at Salem. The genealogy issue is finding out where your ancestors got moved to along with the destruction of many records in '06. This was really interesting and accidentally relevant to me. Thank you! P.S. My father bought a victorian house in SF owned by a 'spinster' school teacher and found hundreds of wine bottles buried in her basement. :-)
Empty bottles have been used as a sort of thermal insulation 100 years ago. If you put them under your floor the floor gets less cold from beneath, compared to a normal concrete floor just put on soil. Modern insulation like Polystyrene works in a similar way, just in a smaller scale
Thank you Ron for doing this story on this little girl. Fascinating story. Its wonderful that all those people who worked together to find out who she was. Now she can test in peace. What a beautiful child little Edith was. You did an amazing story with all the history and details Ron.👍👍❤❤❤
I was literally covered in goosebumps upon your reading her headstone... not to mention welled up with tears. Beautiful story! God rest her precious little soul.
I wonder why this burial process is not used sometimes today . the preservation of her is incredible. Perfectly intact over 130 years later . amazing . sleep well beautiful little angel ❤
But why? “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust”…..our physical bodies should return to the earth. I’d hate people viewing me or my loved ones after the spirit is set free.
Sad story but so interesting as well. Thanks to you Sir for your time and effort in putting the story together and narrated it in a way that will be more attractive and interesting. I am a fan of this FACES OF THE FORGOTTEN. It is because the story was true and it will take us back to how many years earlier. It was such a long period of time. RIP to all that are in the grave till that Glorious Morning.
Beautiful story she’s precious just a beautiful little girl. I’m so glad she was found. Thank u Ron for the story and to the entire Miranda project 💐. RIP Edith
This is an example of the level of the reputation you hold on you tube, you have a very good content and your videos also highlight the standards of caring people that watch you, their goodness comes thru, your reputation has preceeded you in this as the cemetery allowed you to film this is a labor of love more than just filming a video, you and your viewing audience are top of the line
As a genealogist myself, I was afflicted with the same fatal disease that she had to have from you mentioning she may have died from malnutrition. I’m 78yo and researched the time period starting in 1860 to 1964. So I wrote down all the various diseases and health problems that existed back then. I eventually researched each old medical name to add to my book on the subject. Many of the old time diseases still exist but the name of the disease was updated. Now, as for me, back in 1944 when I was just 6 months old, my mother was concerned because I kept throwing up her breast milk and had bad diarrhea. She took me to a local hospital and two doctors examined me in a private area and then brought me back to my mother. My mother had lost a baby the year before and what the doctors told her brought her to tears. “Take your son home Mrs M he’s dying and there’s nothing we can do for him!” My grandfather is Native American and said to her when she was young, that if she had a child that White man doctors cannot help, take it to a medicine man. So what was killing me, a disease/condition known back then as “Waste of Life”, a killer of babies and young children. It’s still around today but is now known as “Failure to Thrive.” What is it, it’s a bowel problem in which the body cannot absorb certain fats and proteins. So you lose so much weight, you die of malnutrition. Yes, I still suffer from it but I don’t eat things my bowel cannot absorb. Btw, yes, my medicine man knew what was wrong and gave my mother herbs to make into a tea and in a few days it was in her breast milk and “here I am,” those two doctors that foretold my death are dead a long time ago.
@@emilyspector2728 Thank you and every time I go to the cemetery where he is buried, I stop at his gave and thanking him for saving my life and who knows how many other countless lives. Wow, how beautifully preserved was Edith, a little angel. Being from the UK, I find your videos amszing and full of such wonderful information. Thank you for your hard work Ron. ❤️
Lol if you look up the real photo , she was literally a rotting corpse . The only preserved part of her was her hair (obviously) and the flower she held , which definitely did not look like “it was picked up yesterday”
This is just so sad. I don't know how the Cook's made it through after losing a child so precious, but God works in mysterious ways. Edith got lucky being able to play in such a nice big house with the little girls who happened to be younger in age(Win for Edith)!! Thankfully she is no longer unknown, and has a proper resting place, hopefully near her family.
I saw a paranormal show by the nephew of Ed Warren, husband of the famous Lorraine Warren and they investigated tavern and inn that had a child sized Fisk Coffin. To say that the team was freaked out would be a huge understatement! (It was empty and had never been used.) When the lead investigator researched the coffin, he realized how rare it was. I wish I could remember the name of the T.V. show, and the place they were investigating, but I can't. Since I'm fighting my own "virus" again, I don't have the mental energy to research, I hope I've given enough clues for you to finish the search. There was a child brutally murdered at the site.
That is so sad they should not move cemetery’s but she was such a beautiful little girl and the head stone what it said was beautiful thank you for showing us 🌹🌸🌺
I love how much time you put into each one of these. My grandparents would tell stories of all their loved ones. No one does this anymore. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
God has not forgotten little Edith and He placed the right people in place, at the right time, to not only identify her through modern technology, but also to tell her story 100 plus years later. That's incredible!

Ron, your videos remind me of my grandfather, Arbie McGraw. When he was displaced by the Toledo Bend Reservoir, he helped the state and historical societies find the old graves of the pioneers and the Indian mounds and move and reinter them before the dam caused the waters to rise over them. Several decades later one of his sons was driving over the lake when the water levels were low and saw outlines in the mud of come coffins that were missed. My grandfather is one of my heroes is because he volunteered to serve during World War II even though as a married man in his late twenties he could have been exempt. And the day he died he was up in his kitchen fixing soup for someone who was in worse health than he was. One of my memories of him is riding in his truck to cemeteries deep in the piney woods and watching him move the grass. Helping preserve graves is just one more reason I consider him a hero.
Your voice telling us about little Edith was mesmerizing. So respectful. I’ve read about this little girl many times. It was so nice to hear about her reinterment and the beautiful headstone and it’s words. Thank you again Ron for bringing this to us. Rest In Peace sweet Edith. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel.
I really enjoyed this story Ron!!! I bet there’s 2 happy parents looking down on everyone that was involved in bringing their baby girl back to light thank you Ron I really enjoyed this ❤️
Great story, thank you for sharing. After being left behind, then disturbed, some amazing people gave her peace with dignity. Then, channels like this allow her to live on, for all to get acquainted. That's really nice.
Thank you! You are truly doing the Lord's work. If this precious child's spirit was uneasy and was roaming thru that house, I hope that she is now completely at rest.
This was beautifully done, Ron. This has to be one of my favorites! Interesting to note that the tombstone directs visitors to "Google" the story. That will be a fun pop culture reference in 100 years, when Google is long gone.
Thank you so much for this story an others . So happy she is not unknown anymore . What a beautiful baby ! So sad when our loved ones pass but even worse when it's a child n young . God bless Edith .
Miranda is now in Heaven hugging, and laughing with sweet Edith. And Edith probably thanking her, for finally giving her a final earthly resting place. Great video. Thank you for all the work you do. You know, while on this earth we put everyone in a class category, and many whether rich, or poor. However, at the grave.....Nobody is rich or poor anymore. And, the sad part....by the look of many of these headstones, nobody has come to visit them in a long time. You always wonder, what exactly do we take with us when we die?! We take no earthly possessions, no money, cars, houses...etc. We take our actions, and our deeds to face the ultimate Judge for what we did on this earth. Miranda Eve, probably helped many with faces of the forgotten...but this (probably one of the last acts ) she finally brought closure and peace to the remaining family member (s) of Edith Cook. May they both rest peacefully in the Loving Arms of God.
This is an absolutely amazing video, what a great put together, perfect piece of history. Beautiful little Edith Cook in a perfect state of preservation. She looks as if she's sleeping. I can picture her smiling and talking. Truly remarkable.
What an interesting story. I remembered something about this , your research as well as the other researchers, is amazing. That picture circulated sometime recently. Me, being a retired funeral director and embalmer, I’m truly amazed with the condition of the Fisk casket and her remains.
I found this story very misleading. This is not what the girl looked like ... She certainly didn't have rosy cheeks! This is an artists interpretation.
@@theeggtimertictic1136 I always find it odd when misleading stuff doesn't seem necessary. I think it would still be a good story despite the true condition of her body, which looks no better than a 100 year body ffrozen on Everest for example.
@@fenderOCG Uh, you think that's odd, just try to direct people (here) how to find the real image of her. I don't know how the video creator is censoring the comments, whether reading and deleting them one-by-one or what. At first I thought he just had it set to auto-delete any with the name of the most popular search engine that rhymes with 'frugal' but I do see one extant comment that has that word, however it is just referencing the fact that it is etched in her grave stone. So maybe the word just gets a flag for him to check and see if someone is directing people to find the real photo. I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist but something real fishy is going on with the comments here, and I don't just mean ones that I wrote. I'm getting lots of replies that I can read in my notifications but they are no longer on the actual page feed. What I really can't guess is WHY???
Reminds me of the story I sent you about Little Miss #1565 from the Hartford Circus Fire. She too may be buried under the wrong name. They won't do DNA because of costs. Such a sad story, even though her picture was in the paper and very recognizable she was never claimed early on. At first named Eleanor Emily Cook, she did not fit description. And her mother said that it was not her daughter. Then a note left on the grave said "Sarah Graham is her Name! 7-6-38 DOB, 6 years, Twin."
Interestingly I’ve just begun to follow another site dedicated to crime & the missing. He uses a portion of member fees etc. and has helped fund DNA research of J. Doe’s. Amazing to have seen a 60 yr. old case given his name back.
Silver City, Idaho is a tiny, tiny town, but the graveyard is huge there. So many babies and kids died, when pioneers tried to make a life out there, silver mining in the nearby mountains. But they also faced off with hostile American Indian tribes, outlaws, disease, and even starvation. I've been there about a couple dozens, in the last 30 years, mostly for the hiking trails in the spring and fall, and camping near the town. When the hotel was running, they had a restaurant that served food, cooked on iron stoves, or baked in wood-fed ovens. Something about a baked, apple pie made in an iron, wood-fed oven just seems to make it taste so much better to me.
What a remarkable story. I’ve heard about windowed caskets previously in Italy, but didn’t know they were known as Fisk Caskets and were popular in the US. What’s even more amazing to me is that with 1860’s manufacturing processes they were actually able to make perfectly airtight sealed caskets that have remained airtight to this day after being buried for over 100yrs… astounding. I’m curious to know why people went to the trouble of having a windowed coffin only to then bury it. I would’ve thought they’d only have been used in family tombs/mausoleum so the departed could be seen long after passing… rather curious don’t you think?
Thankyou Ron for this amazing and touching story. The dignity you give to the people who's story you tell is so heart-warming. May little Edith Rest in Peace. 🙏🙏💖🙏❤❤

My heart sobbed when I heard this story. So true to your word Ron - Faces of the Forgotten - never to be forgotten and respected. Thank you for your wonderful journeys with and for the forgotten ones. Bless you and thank you. xx
She was already preserved. When they broke the seal on the iron coffin they probably started the body to decay. If they reopened the wood coffin now. They would probably find that the body had decayed badly because of it being disturbed.
You did a beautiful job telling her forgotten story. Now thanks to all who worked hard so little Ms. Cook can R.I.P. bless all of you. She is an angel now. And so are all of you.
