RSM has a quick video to make you go "Hmmmm" when it comes to giving your backyard chickens frozen treats. While it's hot outside and you want to help your chickens be more comfortable, sometimes a frozen snack (or ice water) can do more harm than good. Listen to the strategies, decide what works best for you and your backyard flock, and keep everyone safe and healthy this summer. (Also, RSM is so frustrated - the term she kept trying to think of was "High Glycemic Index" when it comes to snacks for your birds!)

I freeze gallon bottles and put them under the bushes and then I have two five gallon coolers that I converted to chicken waters so their water stays cool all day I just add ice blocks every morning sadly I still lost one of girls last week the heat got her ❤

Installing misters has been the best thing I’ve done for my girls. It cools the run by 10 degrees at least. I also put frozen water bottles into their water feeders and change out the water multiple times a day as needed. I also have 2 fans in their coop to pull the heat out as well as keep it circulating. Blueberries are my go to treat.

Mine don’t care for the pool idea, so I flood different shaded areas of the yard twice a day. I free range them, and rotate these areas. This cools them down by getting their feet and legs cool. After the water soaks into the ground, they enjoy pecking around, and laying on the cool earth. I follow up with a cold treat, like cold watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, cabbage or lettuce. I also keep 4 fans inside the coop at night. 2 are box fans, one in the opening at the top of the back (north) wall, blowing out, to blow out the hot summer south air. One on the ground at an angle pointing somewhat at the ceiling to blow the hot air around, while some of the hot air gets blown downward from the other fans, towards the south, and out the door. A small 8” fan that hangs from the ceiling, pointing downward a bit towards their roosts, and the 4th fan is an oscillating pedestal fan to keep the air flowing.

That’s great! I know you know this but for anyone else - keep an eye on the electrical in the coop as animals will chew on it or weaken it. Ain’t it crazy how we have to do so much for chickens in the summer?!? ✌🏻❤️🐓

Hi, just found your channel and enjoy watching the videos. I noticed my chickens have worms for the first time and am trying to find dosing for Ivermectin- I have oral solution 10mg/ml and was going to put some in their water but cant find dosing info, do know how much to give or where I could find that out? Ive been in some chicken sites but not finding anything.. Thanks for your help!

Hi! It’s technically made for large animals so dosing is always a bit tricky. I do it on their back so it absorbs into the skin and I can control the dosing better. For an average full sized breed I would do about 6 drops. Then repeat in a week. Remember that I’m not a vet though! ✌🏻❤️🐓

Yes to the frozen water bottle. I have seen my ladies briefly stand on them or lay near them. I also make a electrolytes water along with a plain water container. Love your channel :)

@@realsimplemama I have a sick one and I've never dealt with this. I'll tell you everything I've done so far. Maybe you can give additional suggestions. Buff orp. was panting. So distress in breathing but with no audibles and no mucous. Quarantined and started electrolytes. I know it's hot but they have plenty of shade and fans blowing - the other birds are just fine. I put a little vics salve on her nostrils bc I had seen my grandmother do this. No noticeable mites/fleas/worms etc in feces. I have fan blowing on/near her and have spent a good deal of time soothing her. She has began to do periods of close beak but is still panting more than normal at times. Can you think of anything else I could be doing or what it could possibly be? Thank you so much for responding!❤

@bmac5242 hey there. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I think you did a great job! It’s possible she was just overheated and you caught it. I would observe her overnight and over the next t day or two, and see how she does. I’d also monitor her droppings (another good reason to quarantine her if you can), and her water and food intake. If it was just heatstroke then she’d be 100% within 12-24 hours. And she might not lay an egg for a few days which is ok. I hope that’s all it is! ✌🏻❤️🐓 theMama@realsimplemama.com

@@realsimplemama It's 11:30pm and she's still panting. Taken in a lot of electrolyte water. Laying quiet in front of fan. Yes, I'll keep her separate for a few days. I hope you're right that she just overheated and it will pass soon. Thank you thank you so much for responding and giving me encouragement.

@bmac5242 hey! How is she doing this morning? If she’s still looking weak, let’s start doing a medical check on her to look into things more like water belly or being egg bound.
