Thank you. Each day Hope is getting just a little better. She is in much better shape now than she was two weeks ago. I'm really amazed by her stamina.
When i was single, recipies for 2 had a resurgence. What i found was that they were often more expensive per serving so I ended up seeking recipies for 4, or 6. I made, divided, and froze portions for further eating, lunches, and quick dinners. I have almost always purchased meat in family packs or took advantage of sales on full sized roasts and other cuts. Then I portioned and froze, cooked and portioned, etc..
I change my furniture around the house. Change curtains from room to room and if I have any funds maybe paint and add plants. I’ve did this over the years. It works.
Oh, yes, Larry, please bring Philip back on. He is so personable and so much fun. I would love to hear his perspective about working money and using his own money for the things that he needs. I have a daughter who is just about to turn 16. She is very aware of the budgeting in our family. She is eager to work. Hearing from Philip About how he feels about spending money for things and how he approaches that would help me in conversations with my daughter. Please have him come on again.
Someone mentioned about how to gift the spouse. Since I'm not married, have no family left and am retired, how I handle gifts for myself is anything that I need but do not have to use immediately becomes my Christmas or birthday gifts. I start looking at a list at the beginning of October. If I see something on my list (books, kitchen stuff, a supply for one of my many hobbies) especially if it is on sale (!), I purchase it and gift wrap it at that time. By Christmas, I have forgotten what is in many of the gifts, so it's still a nice surprise for me!
Oh dear. I didn't see the video about Hope and her accident. I pray everything heals well and look forward to seeing her again. I agree with giving your teens money responsibility , We had five kids and when they were in High school they all worked during the summer ( we didn't want them to work during school so they could concentrate on the studies and sports.) My husband retired at 57 , we planned ahead and paid the mortgage off before we retired.

Great job, Larry! You and Hope make such a great team - always working together. While you do one thing, Hope does another. It's very refreshing to see. I'm glad the question of gifts came up (and also the question from the lady who has a hard time passing up social events that tend to bust the budget.). My children and I are not really into gifts of any price. We definitely enjoy time together. We also enjoy taking adventures together (which aren't always inexpensive). We once took a personality test and realized we all share this same trait - tangible gifts ranked the lowest for each and every one of us, where "time together" ranked the highest. As a group, we agreed that, for the most part, we don't exchange gifts - that's not to say that we never exchange gifts. One year, while my son was out of town, I visited my daughter-in-law at their home. I brought flowers for her table and made lunch for her while she sat at the kitchen island and watched me. We had a great chat, great food, and excellent company. It ended up being 4-5 hours of time together, just the two of us, and it meant as much to me as it did to her. We are so blessed. She loved that she didn't have to cook or clean up afterwards as a bonus.
I am single and food savings can be tricky for me. I basically buy bulk but not at the level as Larry and Hope. Today is a good example. I eat meat and today the local store has a truck load meat sale. 10# boneless and skinless chicken breasts $20 and I marinade them and store them single servings in the freezer. 10# of pork tenderloin $20 and I am converting it to pulled pork and storing them in quart zip lock bags and storing them into the freezer. 10# of chicken leg quarters $6.99. I strip the meat off the bones and freeze it on a cookie sheet and divide it up in zip lock bags and use it in soups, tacos, ect. A friend has a farm sold me beef hamburger 95% lean ten 1# sticks $40. This is most of the meat for a year. Most are single serving or a small bag. If I store it in large sizes it goes bad or I have to eat the same food over and over. I grow a garden and it gives me around 50-60% of my food and I try to store it in the freezer in smaller sizes. I make spelt bread and cut it up and store it in the freezer in smaller bags. I have around an 8 cubic ft freezer that seems to be full all the time so I try to can food to ease the space problem in the freezer. I have moved to pints and 1/2 pints being single. This causes a problem canning with disposable lids. Lids can cost as high as 30 cents each, so I moved reusable lids. The food I gift uses disposable lids. I budget $5 a day or $35 a week for food snacks. I do buy salmon and smoke it and I buy shrimp so the cost can be high on them. I did find a guy from Alaska that had 50# of Alaskan fresh caught salmon and bought it for $7 a lb. I smoked it and vacuumed sealed it. Deals are out there if you look!

Hope, I really want you to feel better I have been suffering with relatively the same injury...I am also on a Frugal Journey with my husband and now I have this injury and we just take it a day at a time and stay on it...we sure enjoy your Channel...stay on the path you guys you're doing great
For singles do batch cooking like soups, lentil meals, bean meals, etc ., and freeze in glass (jam jars) as I don't like plastic. NEVER fill to top of jars as liquids expand in the freezing. Take jar of food out night before intended use to naturally defrost. Food simply has to be re-heated saving cooking costs. Try cutting back on meat. (I am vegetarian for over thirty years).
I do a lot of pint size canning, which is perfect for one person. You are not so cramped for space as with a freezer. I have jars (pressure canned) under my bed, in my pantry, and some in the walk-in closet. That way, if the weather gets bad or I lose electricity, I can open a jar of or two and make a meal. And of course, get the fresh fruit and vegetables in season and can them.
One way to spruce up your kitchen cabinets is to just put new doors on the cabinets if the boxes are ok. Also new, decorative cabinet pulls can make them look freshened up.
Indeed, those who are in reckless relationships truly need to address this. It is often difficult to address.. but in the long term even harder to NOT address. It is most important to HONOR one's self. We all deserve security.

Larry you are such a good man. I really enjoy listening to you. You are the type person that I would trust what you say. I don't think you would ever mislead a person. In this day and time that is so rare. My brother is that way too. I always go to him for any advice. I'm a single 61 yr old female that has a problem with trust due to my past. With all that being said, I know Hope is a good woman also. Don't want to leave her out!! Keep up the good work!!

I'm curious how many sf your home is. Also you mentioned multiple income streams...curious what the percentage is of pension v SS v. add'l income is. My husband and I would like to stay in our home til the end (we are in our 60s and still both work FT so we are looking ahead many years hopefully!) - I will get a pension and my husband has a 401k. Kids are all married and on their own. We like to enjoy ourselves and take some vacations but we also buy used cars, and try to be fairly frugal in many ways so it is a balance. Once we retire that will change and we expect that. So trying to get some kind of idea of the pension v. side gig ratio you and Hope use to start thinking about our long-term plan (knowing of course that everyone's situation is different). TY
Fun fact: if your offspring works parttime at Caribou while attending high school, he gets a half pound of coffee free each Tuesday. No idea when coffee was last purchased. Seriously, two years now.
I don't know who it was that asked that question about how to teach their 19-year-old stuff but I'm so glad they did because I didn't know you were going to do a questions and answers so I never got a chance to message and ask. First off let me say I'm really sorry that Hope got hurt and that you got hurt on your bike. You guys haven't had the best of luck recently have you? So glad you guys are healing. Now about my children lol. I have two adult daughters and my oldest daughter just recently had a baby and gave me my first grandchild. They are not her and and her husband Are just not good at managing money. Periodically when I see them I try to give them tips and ideas on how to save money and my opinion on the importance of saving for your future. I was not taught about money growing up. That was an adult conversation and children weren't allowed to talk about money. Well I'm now 62 years old and wondering if I'm ever going to be able to retire. I'm sure I will I have a good job and it does have retirement however with inflation the way it is I'm not 100% sure that my retirement income will be enough. Once I start receiving retirement it is taxable. Also up until a few years ago I thought Medicare or Medicaid the insurance you get when you retire with social security I thought that insurance was free. But a few years ago I was told by my doctor that it is not free and that it can cost around 3 or $400 a month. Wow that is a large chunk of change. And if your income is only 2,000 a month minus taxes then having to pay an extra three or $400 a month out of it leaves little to live on. So it does make sense to start saving early. I wish my parents had taught me better so I am trying to teach my kids the things that I wasn't taught that I find to be important. I love what you said about what you do with your kids and about making them pay rent and making them pay their own car insurance and such. When my youngest daughter was the last person in the house my last child to leave the house while she still lived with me and she got her first job for the first year or two years I did not charge her very much rent. I did charge your rent but it was only $50 every two weeks. Basically $50 each paycheck. And she had to pick one bill in the house to pay. Naturally she picked the cheapest bill which was the internet bill. And that was okay and that went on for about 2 years. A little over 2 years went by and my mortgage started going up and things started going up so I told her she needed to start paying more. She was really good about it and she said she could agree to pay $400 a month and I said how about 300 a month. I'm not trying to fleece my kids when I make them pay for things. Just like you said Larry it is to teach them about real life. Now my daughter is in her own apartment she does have a roommate so they share expenses but she has her own car she pays her own insurance she recently got off of my cell phone service and now has her own cell phone service. So I think I did pretty good with her I wish you would spend less money and save I'm still working on that. She doesn't make a lot of money but she did just finish pastry chef school so hopefully she'll be able to keep growing in her financial journey and her goals as a baker. It is my oldest daughter that I'm worried about. They had to move out of their two bedroom house and into a small one bedroom apartment. My daughter and her husband have really bad credit. So in order for them to get into an apartment I had to co-sign for them which I did and I also paid their first month's rent and security deposit and they have two cats so I had to pay for their cat deposit. I made it very very clear that this was not a gift this was a loan. I have not pressured them to pay me back but I did tell them when they moved in that this was money I wanted back when they got a good tax refund. They had their baby in August so that will increase their tax refund because they now have a dependent. But I totally understand what that lady is talking about when it comes to young children blowing their money. But I like what you said Larry about teaching your kids about paying rent. And paying their own way. That is good. I have set up a savings account for my granddaughter which my children do not know about. It is not a lot but I'm hoping that by the time my granddaughter is 16 years old she will have enough money or I will have enough money in that account for her to help her in something important. My first thought was a good used car but if she wanted to use it for education or some other important thing to her then I could make that happen too. Hello Larry, I'm senior trying to save and cut back as many ways as possible. When watching TV and let's says you have to run out to store and maybe will be gone 2 hours, money wise is it better to shut TV off or keep it on because you'll be watching it again. Single seniors keep TV on just to hear sound. Thank you , you are doing a great job. Well wishes to Hope.
