Great video..can't wait for the update... I have 8 pluots (two 4 in 1 trees) growing in large pots here in Wisconsin ... overwintered in my garage. All 8 have fruit... Can't wait to be the only guy in the state with home grown Flavor King pluots :

We use micro sprinklers which put out 2 gallons per hour, available at irrigation supply stores, or online.

No harmful bug issues, mulch provides an ideal environment for beneficial bio, fungal, and insect activity. I've been mulching like this for 30 years with all positive results.

Interesting. Here in the northeast they claim pests and disease can winter over in the stuff and I tend to pull it away from the trees in prep for winter. BTW, I can't that you enough for the videos.Very generous of you. I have started a small orchard (24 trees - apples, peaches and pears) on my property near Albany NY. I'm very jealous of the length of your growing season! Wish I could buy directly from you but I understand the challenges of retail service. Vincent.

If I remember right they advise not to add anything to the soil because it can prevent the roots from spreading out of the original planting hole.

Beautiful fruit trees. I would prefer to plant the trees; pink-flowered and white -flowered, short trees. I am in Kenya.

Well, I'm not sure what that means...anna and dorset both budded and flowered and have set fruit...fuji has a few leaves that have budded at the end of the one grafted fuji branch but has not flowered at all. anna and dorset have a bi-forked graft on both branches...fuji only has one long branch. That was the way it was when I purchased it from the nursery that your website pointed me to. All I've done is snip shoots that appeared below the grafts on the root stock. nothing is overgrown IMO.

I just watched a documentary about water and how California agricultural land are becoming more salty. And how the global warming is decreasing chill hours. I just want to say thanks to DW and Zaiger genetics for finding solutions to these problems.

Hi Tom, can you give us an update on the Pomegranates ( tree and Bush style). and also how you would prune them if any pruning needed. Thank you and Keep up with the great videos
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 11 лет назад
No soil amendment was used, trees were planted in native soil, and all mulch applied to the surface.
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 11 лет назад
Fuji is just getting ready to flower and break dormancy now. It is a month later than Anna and Dorsett. Make sure your early varieties don't overgrow your Fuji or you could loose it all together. Success with multi bud means managing every variety so no variety is any more aggressive than the weakest variety on the combination.

What should the moisture meter read when the soil is "just fine"? Aren't you afraid of harboring bugs in that much mulch? It seems pretty thick.

Это китайская трехлопастная слива (Prúnus tríloba)? У нас тоже такая растет. У нее махровые цветы. Очень зимостойкое растение. В теплом климате она тоже растет? This is a Chinese three-lobed plum (Prúnus tríloba)? At us too such grows. She has double flowers. Very hardy plant. Is it also growing in a warm climate?

Do you use the 3-12-12 fertilizer all the time after your tree is in the ground for two seasons? Or do you use 3-12-12 in winter, then use grow power in spring and summer?
@jessie.juxtapose

What is the purpose of thinning the fruit all the way down to one per branch? To prevent snapping the branch and allow the branch to get bigger/stronger next season? Sorry, good video! Thanks for the information :)
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 5 лет назад
Not one per branch, depending on the size of the tree. Left un-thinned the fruit load can break limbs, and the fruit quality will be poor. We thin for the health of the tree, and much nicer, larger and sweeter fruit. The more you thin, the larger your fruit. Space peaches and large fruit to at least 8 inches between fruit, smaller fruit, like plums need less space. Thinning is by far the hardest thing fruit growers must do. Thin, wait a few days, thin some more. As the fruit develops you will now if you thinned enough.

since you dont wáter much, how do you fertilize? do you use liquid fertilizer at the base of the tree? im just assuming that you do not put granules around the dripline.
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 8 лет назад
+Gardener Wannabee Our mother-stock trees get a normal amount of irrigation. We use micro-sprinklers, and actually we do use granular fertilizer. A product called Tree 'N Vine.

Excellent video. Bought a few trees from your Nursery for our home garden in San Jose. I'm sold on Saturn Peach and Burgandy Plum to add to 4 Santa Rosa Plums, 12 Peach trees, 4 Apricots, 7 Apples, 7 Cherry trees. 3 Pomegranates, ... but how do you get so many blossoms on your trees?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 3 года назад
A heavy bloom is a sign of overall tree health. The more fruiting wood, the more bloom. So it's a combination of good drainage, good full sun exposure of at least 6 hours, proper pruning techniques, sound irrigation routine, being carful not to overwater as fruit trees don't do well when watered more than weekly. A good fertilizer routine helps.

Hi Dave, I have a 3-1 davewilson low chill apple tree. Anna and Dorset bloomed and have put on fruit. Fuji didn't flower and has hardly any buds. I know Fuji is a late season variety but shod I be worried about it at this point? Thanks, mike in Houston.

Hi! we live in NC and moved to a house that has 2 peach trees, unknown what kind. we watch a pruning video, the trees never been pruned and now we have blossoms that are about to burst. my question really is we need to fertilize it, yes but how much watering do we have to do in the summer time? thanks!!
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 8 лет назад
+Tina W. Fruit trees don't like a lot of water. After irrigating, let the top few inches of soil dry before watering again. Should be about every 10 to 14 days. A thick layer of mulch can extend this period and do wonders for your soil and tree.
@sboss81
@sboss81 4 года назад
do you water after fertilizing? do you pull back the mulch?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 4 года назад
I usually add the fertilizer on top of the mulch, then work it in with a rake. Watering in is good too.

I live in zone 10A, I have a citrus tree that the bees really love, but right next to it, I have a 5 year old Santa Rosa Plum and a 4 year old Flavor King Pluot that I just bought this year, and both are blooming very well but the bees wont touch either of my plum trees, I only got 2 fruits from the santa rosa last year even though it says it's self fruitful . Any ideas what's wrong with my santa rosa? And should I start pollinating the flavor king myself since the bees wont go near either of them?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 8 лет назад
+DKenUCLA Don't be impatient, your trees are still teenagers. If the bees are present they will pollinate but you have to allow your trees to become of fruiting age. Keep mulching, pruning, irrigating and fertilizing and your rewards will follow.
@DKenUCLA
@DKenUCLA 8 лет назад
+Dave Wilson Nursery thank you for the reply, I will be more patient, i was just becoming paranoid that maybe my zone was too hot or i got a bad strain of santa rosa. I know my trees are kind of young so hopefully this is the year i finally get a good fruit set.

Would manure compost be a good pre-bloom fertilizer?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 3 года назад
Not in my opinion. Too high in salts and too high in nitrogen. Maybe 10% to 15% composted, leached manure to 85% - 90% bio diverse wood mulch. A little manure goes a long way.
