Fry Bread Tacos from a Native American Food Truck - Cooking in America 

Off the Rez catered my wedding in 2012! They're such good folks, and their food is delicious. Super stoked to see them on here!

More on the Native American community would be great!

Navajo here from the Diné tribe. Just want to say thank you for the recognition of the Native Americans here in the U.S. And this video was informative and made me hungry asf. Hahah.

Back in 2009 a group of my friends from the UK visited Seattle and the reservations around Olympic peninsula; we visited with the Makah, Quileute, Jamestown S’Klallam and Suquamish Nations. I was introduced to fry bread on the Makah Reservation, when we had a cookout on the beach and some of the community cooked for us. I had my first Indian Taco whilst attending the Tribal Canoe Journey on Suquamish Reservation. They tasted awesome. And don’t get me started on huckleberries... the jam is soooo good. On my last visit to Seattle last year I brought some home. I didn’t bring enough!

Okay, some of the Hungarians in the comments who can’t seem to grasp the concept of different cultures having similar foods, we get it you have a version of fried bread too.

Good to see my heritage used in good services. I've always find it sad that our history of food has been ignored and erased instead of shared and celebrated.

fry bread - a necessity food item born out of rations of flour and lard

When I worked out on the street in Seattle a few years back doing ticket sales the guys from this truck used to hook me up with fry bread all the time - some seriously cool dudes!

I am half Native American, and fry bread is a must! We never lived on the tribe’s reservation, but when we do go back one of my aunts already has the dough ready to fry some bread because she knows we want some. We try to make it at home, but it isn’t the same like my aunt does it. It does something to you when you eat it. It is like it connects to your soul, and we eat it up. As far as I can remember, I have been eating fry bread. From the time a baby can eat solid food, fry bread is given to a Native American child. Fry bread is a part of Native American culture, and it just makes you remember all the good times you had sitting and enjoying being with each other. Some have passed on, but you just remember. I love being Native American!!

Fry bread is amazing. First had it at the Alabama Coushatta reservation in Texas’s Great Piney Woods. Instantly fell in love with it. All the better with good venison sausage

Off The Rez is amazing!!! I recommend it to everyone that's in Sea. They were stationed in the parking lot of my job for about 2 weeks and I ate it everyday 😂

We also fry bread like that in Galicia. Seeing those tacos reminds me of what I do with my bread when I feel fancy but I mostly like it simple. If I ever visit Seattle I'll try to try this!

Used to have fry bread all the time as a kid in New Zealand. I loved them hot with butter and Golden Syrup.

I love fry bread native tacos. The best. So good.

I'm surprised that this is the only fry bread joint in Seattle. It's all over Portland. And visit any national park and the nearby cities in the U.S. west and you'll likely find fry bread and/or "Navajo" tacos. I've seen them in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Not my first choice but fry bread is quite tasty indeed. Another cool Sheldon episode. 👍

I have these every time I go back to Oklahoma. The ones we have are as big as a plate.

Frybread is a labor intensive dish, which is why a lot of time it's done for special events or pow wow season. A spot on the Grand Ronde rez used to have the Skookum Burger. Which was a HUGE burger made with huge frybread buns. It was one of those challenge burgers. Skookum is a word from my coastal tribe that means the equivalent of demon.

Broo the "pow wow burger" is called a bannock burger in Canada

Basically the same as Langos from Hungary. When I was in Budapest I had it with sour cream, cheese and chives as well as a burger. Now I know if I'm ever in Seattle to try the taco and huckleberry jam styles.

In Hawaii when they have the Pow Wows they sell that. Either fry bread tacos or with honey. The tacos are bomb!

the hungarian langos is like the italian pizza, it was born out of a way to use up leftover bread dough. native american frybread is different in that it was never intended to be baked in an oven so it is fresh dough intended to be fried, not leftover old dough. the hungarian dough also frequently contained potatoes, something native american frybread never has.

On our Rez in Nebraska we cut the fry bread in half for our INDIAN tacos

We're the second to start a food truck here in yakima county for ndn tacos and burgers as well stuffed frybread ect so happy they started 1st just ate at their Cafe last week and we as well have a restaurant now in Toppenish Wa A&B Native American cuisine

This just inspires me to start a food truck to share our Navajo culture with the different ethical backgrouds of amerca through food. Here on the Navajo reservation I can only think of 2 restraunts that specialize in Native American cuisine. Besides that the only other place to get native food is at a local swapmeet.

Oh lord, what did I do to be blessed with this video? I never knew there were so many variations. I only thought about traditional Indian tacos, Wojapi sauce, and dipping it in soup soup soup. My mom would use bread for burgers, prairie dogs, and ham sandwiches and that was it. Now I'm going to ask her to experiment more and more. ^^

Well this was a type of food that was introduced pretty late, as when they where on the rez, because this was the food rations they where given by the government. Back then it was probably less tasty, and fancy looking. I love how you take something so universal (many cultures have them) and simple as fry bread, and make it so tasty, and fresh. I make this maybe twice a year.

I'm native myself and it always comes as a surprise to mr seeing people have interest in our culture, mostly people talk about other races and not about native americans often.

Fry bread are bakes in Trinidad n Tobago. Bake n Shark in Maracas beach: pepper sauce , garlic sauce, tambrand chutney, mango chow with a Shandy.

My friends are from that rez lmao. I'm black, family are Gullah who joined Seminoles. Fry bread is delicious. Definitely made some yesterday.

New Mexico is known for their "stuffed sopaipilla" dish which is also similar to "Navajo tacos" which is all a version of fried bread! =)

Actually there is a very similar dish in bavaria germany. In this region people are used to eat this as a dessert at traditional festivities!

His style of Frybread is similar to the ones in Calgary, Alberta which is north of Browning Montana where he is from, the recipe maybe have hopped north of border during the Calgary Stampede days when I look forward to eating several Indian Tacos mmmmmmmm

I know he said it’s neat that it’s true American food but really, our people were given rations by the government and fry bread came out of that. Takin lemons and turning into lemonade kinda thing. 😊
