I remember when I was a boy, my Southern grandma took us kids to her friend's backyard pond to catch a whole mess of bluegill, then we went back to her house and she fileted them all out with the skin still on. She saved all the tails and fins and fried them up along with the filets. I'll tell you what, I still dream about those fins and tails and how we all fought over them once we tasted them for the first time.

When you see gar on the top water like that the oxygen level in the lake is really low. Just like when the catfish are floating to the top dead. ThE levels are really low. After a while you’ll see carp floating dead as well. The summer heat really depletes the oxygen levels in the waters this time of year.

A friend and I were Bass fishing on Lake Texoma in HiPort Marina. He had borrowed a Rapala minnow, the wooden hand carved type. This was in the 80's. His rod bent and he is squealing like a little girl. It was a tug of war for him and everybody could hear him all over the marina. He says it's coming up and UP it came. It was a HUGE GAR, with my Rapala Minnow between his chompers. Well he just cut the line and I watched my expensive Rapala Minnow swim away. He didn't offer to pay me for it, nor did he bring us any snacks or drinks. He didn't even offer up gas money. He never went fishing with me again. I sure missed my Rapala Minnow. If you are squeamish about the head they make a good handle. We had a Dutch oven we would get the oil really hot, spread the fish open so it cooks on the inside and out. In less than a minute they are so crispy you can eat everything. Love you stuff. Thank you.

one of the things that's helped me in the past is taking a spoon, scoop-side-down, and trying to get underneath the scales that way, working back and forth towards the head kinda like buffing a floor, if that makes sense. supposed to keep scales from flying everywhere

Thumbs up for showing peeps that sunfish aren’t overly boney. Going to give them a try next time. I usually just toss them back

I've heard about descaling fish using a table spoon under running water. It's supposed do a great job and scales don't fly everywhere and you don't cut the skin. I've never tried it, but haven't had the chance since I heard about it. It makes since but can't say this is the best way.
