In some modern radios, specially the FT-991(A), is particularly convoluted to make adjustments to transmit a constant carrier at a low power, to test SWR, or to trigger an external antenna tuner automatic tuning cycle.
With just one 3.5mm plug and a simple push button switch is possible to put together a tiny CW key, that along with few menu and band settings will set the FT-991(A) TEMPORARELY into CW at low power.

Super trick.

This is a pretty good trick. I just wish the radio had a setting in it that sent a 10W carrier to help you tune the rig. I recently upgraded from a FT-450D and that radio has the capability to program a button to send a 10W carrier to help you tune (it also has an internal tuner, but most of the time, we run external tuners with multi band antennas... I digress), it was integral in how I ran my rig and setup, and am finding it hard to be without.... Back to this specific trick; I operate CW as well as SSB and it isn't as handy for those of us that do, as we still need to find an easy answer to this question. Tuning with this trick in CW requires you to change all the settings back and forth each time we want to operate CW. That all said, thanks for the video and I'll keep searching. 73 one and all. KA9I

Hi Joe, I'm learning CW and I plan to use the rig for CW as well. The only setting I believe that need to change is the "Keyer" on/off. It should be "off" for using this trick. Is anything else other than that? Thanks. 73.

Great video. It also tells me I have so much more to learn about the capabilities of this amazing radio.

Please explain why you are using the external tuner vs the internal tuner? The 991a is supposed to have internal tuner. Thanks.

@MikeCrabtree 3 года назад
@@haroldpalmsesq2506 The internal tuner can only handle 3:1 SWR ratio or better. See the manual at p.63 of the English manual. Even Yaesu offers the FC-40 as an external tuner. If you know your antenna is good from the outset, maybe by using a VNA like the NanoVNA that are available, then you can use the internal tuner, but if it is an unknown SWR, a tuner capable of 10:1 or 15:1 would work. Ideally, you use a well-tuned antenna in the first place.

You’ve made this way too complex. Any LDG tuner will start a tune cycle if you set the 991 menu item to external tuner and then press the tune button on the front panel. No external switch required.

This switch and settings are not intended for any LDG tuner or MFJ tuner with capabilities to connect to radio band/tuner port. This is for all other tuners that do not connect with a secondary controller cable, notably the ATU-100 which I have several videos on the channel. Thanks for watching and commenting. 73
