Part 3 UPDATE
Installed the ft857d with the atas 120a but still having a small problem with tuning first thing, but after taking the Atas out of the mount and waiting a few seconds the Atas work's 100% so if you have any idea's please post below, it could just need more grounding???
UPDATE INFORMATION:-
So I've installed a better grounding for the ATAS120a and everything is working 100% the antenna now tunes on all the bands with out any problems, so make sure the ground wire is thick when you install it.

So watching this video I was fearful of buying an ATAS-120a antenna. Thankfully a single length of 4mm earth wire affixed to the mount using a ring terminal connector and then connected to a single bolt that was affixing my rear light cluster to the body, was sufficient earthing and it works a dream on all bands from 40 to 70cm. no sanding of painted surfaces, no grinding down of metal under brackets. it does seem like you've had to go a bit far in your attempts to ground your antenna but thought I'd share my success story just to reassure anyone looking at this video and the antenna, you may not need to go to this amount of trouble. Vehicle I've fitted it to is a VW Golf mk4 with a stainless steel Moonraker own brand hatch mount. Rig itself (ft857d) runs from a battery, not grounded to the vehicle.

+M3ta7h3ad I wanted to make sure everything was working because the first attempt worked but not 100% so will the added cables everything work's 100% full tuning even if mobile..

+M0AOV aye it's definitely thoroughly bonded and its nicely done. Just glad I managed to get mine working without going to that amount of trouble. Glad it's working well for you too!

A mobile ham radio is always grounded to the vehicle through the antenna ground, no matter how you power it. I would suggest a proper ground by running your power leads directly to the vehicle battery and a ground strap from rig to ground. But that's just what I have heard for thirty years on the air.

Ron Louis fair enough I didn't realise pedantry would be present. By not grounded to the vehicle I was explicitly stating there was no additional grounding to said vehicle from the radio body itself. i've had my licence for 2 years and consulted the combined knowledge of my local radio club which I would wager is considerably more experience (though I would say time is not an indicator of credibility normally but hey you brought it up) than your 30 and the proof is in the pudding, my rig works just fine from 2 to 40 mtrs on my atas-120a.

I use a Phone holder from ebay because of the way I've attached both the heads of my IC2820 and the FT857d sorry I've not got an order number or any other information.

Hi Vini it's all down to how much earth bonding you have on your car, make sure if like my car you have all the hinges bonded and use good quality earth cable, on my hatch you can see I ground the paint off the bolts and connected some cables there and on any connections the hatch connected to and also anywhere else I could connect any cables, then my ATAS worked with out any problems but also check just in case your radio is in atas mode, hope some of this info help's

M0AOV yes this is helpfull but i still don't know where on the antenna or mount i need to run the copper wire ...do you put it around the bottom of the pl239 connector before it goes thru the mount?

before you added all that ground wire what was your antena doing when you tried to tune it ?
@M0AOV

Hi Vini same as your Atas nothing, thats why I first installed some earthing cable and the atas would only tune some band but once I did the paint removing and more earthing cable I can tune all bands.
