FTdx10 & FTdx5000MP: SSB Filter Comparison (Video #12 in this series)

My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
This is the twelfth video in a series of videos I will be producing to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. In this video I compare the SSB filtering capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10 and the FTdx5000MP with QRM 2kHz away. This scenario is a real world example of the RMDR ability of the receivers. A lab RMDR test determines the third-order dynamic range for narrow spacing (i.e., QRM 2kHz away). In common language? The RMDR rating measures the ability of a receiver to reject interference from 2kHz away.

I like the 5000 much better , the sound reminds me of my grand fathers Blaupunkt short wave radio in Cuba . I was 5 and my hearing worked good then ;)

Just be careful not to select a radio based upon its speaker. Focus on sensitivity and selectivity. Speakers can be replaced.

As mentioned- the FTDX5000 does not have an RX eq of any kind aside from the low / high cut. The DX10 does (3 band which I know you are aware of) and I think it helps quite a lot. I am really liking the sound out of that DX10! I just noted that the FTDX101 also does not have even the basic RX eq that the DX10 has- disappointing. I've always felt the FTDX5000 to be lacking on strong SSB signals in the lower frequencies. The DX10 is really good with a little base boost (for me). Also thanks for the comments on the speakers- One idea (and I think I'm good here) I've been running relatively inexpensive powered studio monitors (M Audio BX5) for many years. I just had to double check the ohm ratting and its listing 10K Ohm. I guess it should have a high resistance seen by the rig and that should be ok. I've run them with splitters for many years on several radios for the "full on" effect and also like to use that speaker to compare audio on different radios. For about the same price as a matching speaker I get much better output. Although it is nice to have the matching speaker for looks.

It is interesting that Yaesu added a RX equalizer to the FTdx10. 2-way radio isn’t exactly hi-fi. But I did use it to fatten up the audio for the internal speaker a bit, before I got the SP-30. I’m happy with the audio from the SM-5000. I really like the phase-reversal mode. It is like surround sound. Be careful with the speaker output impedance. It is rated for 4 to 8 Ohms. 73, de N4HNH

Doug - What exactly do you think was causing the QRM you were tuning out? Is that what a human voice sounds like from 2 kHz away? Thank you. Mark

Hi Mark! It is indeed a human voice 2KHz away. We are supposed to check up and down the band to see if someone is already using a frequency within +/- 3KHz of where we intend to operate. If someone is within +/- 3KHz, we are supposed to choose a different frequency. But many times these days, operators are not so courteous. And sometimes it is an honest mistake. Thankfully we have receivers now that provide us with the ability to combat the interference. 73, Doug

You can always connect the speakers in serial to present an 8 ohm load to the radio output section. Sure, you’d have less power transferred to the output, but you’d have two speakers, and as you stated, the finals have plenty of headroom.

There is no need to risk it. The FTdx10 only has one receiver, so no separation of receiver audio is needed. And, after I added the foam baffles (in a later video), the sound from the SP-30 is quite good; rivaling the SM-5000.

Two great radios! I am continually amazed at my how FTDX-10 handles both qrm and qrn. Kinda off topic but the question I get asked the most about my 10 is how it compares to the 7300. To me they aren’t even in the same category. The 7300 is a good radio with a nice UI for the money, but the higher performance of the 10 makes it an even better bargain in my opinion. I’d like to see a showdown between the two. Thanks for the video! 73, NJ0Q

You answered them correctly. I guess it depends upon what you’re looking for in a radio. If all you want to do is rag chew on 40 and 80 meters, with stations who are 30 dB over S9, the IC-7300 is fine. If you’re new to amateur radio and feel that you aren’t ready for a contest class rig, the IC-7300 is your friend. If you prefer to see signals, rather then listen to them, the IC-7300 certainly delivers. For me, if I can’t hear them, I can’t talk to them. And I like to chase DX and QRP SOTA stations. The 7300 is not even in the same league as the FTdx10, when it comes to chasing DX, QRP, or contesting. In a contest, you need selectivity. The FTdx10 is 3rd in the world for selectivity. Number 2 is the Flex 6700. Number 1 is the simultaneous dual-receive version of the FTdx10, its big brother, the FTdx10. Actually, if you read the footnotes for the Flex 6700 in Rob Sherwood’s list, the FTdx10 is number 2 in the world for RMDR. It’s like I said in one or two of the videos, the FTdx10 is a game-changer! That’s a whole lot of radio for $1,700. My friend Joel just dropped off his IC-7300 and his FT-991A. I will put both up against the FTdx10. Watch for the videos. 73, de N4HNH

If the Yaesu firmware engineers would copy the the UI of the 7300, then we'd have a near perfect radio with the FTDX10. I have both radios and yeah, the Yaesu does have the better receiver. But I love the UI of the 7300.

I just saw this on your video around the 8:07 mark where some interference seemed to race across the screen from left to right and you hear a little blip when it goes by the frequency you are on. Can you tell me what this racing interference is? I see this on my scope a lot. it also leaves a trace on the display and then it slowly goes away. John

Yes, it is an idea dating back to the early days of radio. The waterfall and 3D spectrum scope make it more noticeable. Without those, we just hear a random beep sound, as the Ionospheric pulse sweeps through the HF spectrum. The Ionosonde system, also called a chirp-sounder, emits an Ionospheric RF pulse and receivers in various locations record the strength of the pulse. This data is interpreted and used to measure propagation. The Ionospheric pulses usually sweep from 1.6 to 12 Megahertz, but they might sometimes extend up to 40 Megahertz. 73, de N4HNH

Ha! I like ICOM. I just wish they had a radio for less than $14,000 that could compete with Yaesu. I don’t want to like Yaesu. I think they don’t pay enough attention to their customers’ wishes. ICOM produces what people want, almost to a fault. They make simple radios that are easy to operate. They just don’t have good DSP. Yaesu puts out a great product and, if it’s missing something that consumers have clearly asked for, like 2m/70cm in the FT-891, Yaesu explains it away. And Yaesu will discontinue a great radio, or amplifier, before they have a replacement. I wish I could prefer another brand. But Kenwood is mostly focused on their commercial sector. So, for my money, I buy the radio that performs the best. But do not think that I am all in for Yaesu. Sorry for the rant. BTW: Yaesu already knows how I feel. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio I don’t consider you a “brand” cheerleader at all, but a skilled operator and you give credit where credit is due. I’m a former electronic warfare technician with extensive experience with military grade high performance receivers and Yaesu’s approach to couple the performance of down converted front end with a DSP is brilliant. It will be interesting to see what ICOM counters with but I suspect they will just continue with their current architecture.

Question: I have a 101d, why did they make the steps to the width control so weird? 300, 400, 600, 850, 1100, 1200, 1500, 1650, 1800, 1950, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400... They couldn't do an even spacing here? Why? Does that follow some octave thing I'm not seeing here? So odd. And the notch takes forever to move, but that's another issue, same knob. Get it together Yaesu.

Those are questions for Yaesu. I have no relationship with Yaesu. I simply use their radios. I don’t mind the width steps though. My favorites are 1800, 1950, 2100, and 2450. I use 1800 quite often when someone moves in 2kHz away. The manual notch seems fine. It follows the band stack. For CW, I keep it at 520Hz and for SSB, I keep it at around 600Hz. I have some local heterodyne at 600Hz when I am on 7.150MHz. So I tend to set and forget. The DNF can handle the transients. There are things that I wish Yaesu would do to improve the transceivers. Yes, thought of that. But the Yaesu technician thinks the RCA jack is grounded to the chassis. He advised against it. But the jack could be reconfigured. 73, de N4HNH

You cannot use a Y. That puts the two SP-30s in parallel. That equals 2 Ohms load. The AF amplifier will overheat. Flat EQ? I like to give all radios their best chance to compete with the other. I use every applicable option available on each. The 5000 has no EQ. It only has shelving. It is running flat. The FTdx10 has 3-band RX EQ. I could flatten its EQ. The SP-30 is made for the FTdx10. The SM-5000 is made for the FTdx5000MP. They use two different configurations. The SM-5000 is powered and and requires three cables. The impedance of the SP-30 doesn’t match the AF output of the FTdx5000MP. The receive EQ has no direct bearing on the selectivity of the receiver. The receiver either can or cannot separate signals. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio I guess I should have been more specific with the Y cable....I was thinking about a series Y cable to make the radio see 8 ohms. Don't get me wrong they both sound fantastic but different due to speaker design. I was hoping to see them play through the same speaker to get a more level playing field. Oh well......

Gotcha! I usually think of a Y cable as parallel, like a splitter. That’s what I asked Yaesu about. But they confirmed the impedance issue. And to wire in series world require some modification to the RCA jack. It’s really not necessary to use two speakers though, except for looks. Like I said, I like to compare the radios with each of them using every applicable feature they possess. I see people on other channels who feel the need to turn off all filters, noise reduction, notch etc., when comparing receivers. But most modern radios possess a sensitive receiver. The filters and DSP are what separate the radios these days. I want my viewers to hear each receiver operating under real conditions, using every applicable option each has. This is, after all, representative off of how my viewers could use the radio if they purchase one like it, or already own one. And I like to use the accessories that would most likely be used with the radio, such as the SP-30. When I compare the FT-991A to the FTdx10, I will unplug the SP-30, since I don’t have the external speaker for the FT-991A. 73, de N4HNH

Two completely different speaker systems. I’m not going to risk the impedance mismatch, and possible damage to my radios for a video that is meaningless anyway. I judge the audio according to what each radio and its matching speaker(s) can deliver.

@@n4hnhradio I was offering an alternative for those wanting to run two 4ohm speakers. It would make an 8ohm load to the radio if 2 of the stock speakers were put in series.
