My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
This is the fourteenth video in a series of videos I will be producing to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. In this video we look at the noise blanker for both the FTdx10 and the ICOM IC-7300.
A Noise Blanker is not the same as a Noise Reducer (aka Digital Noise Reduction). A Noise Blanker is designed to lock onto noise that manifests as repetitive pulses, such as power line noise or the noise generated by the motor in an automobile.
The Noise Blanker detects the noise amplitude and timing, and counters it with an equal amplitude copy of the noise at 180 degrees out of phase. This effectively cancels, or blanks out the noise through a process known as destructive interference. It’s the same concept used in noise-cancelling headphones, though the Noise Blankers in amateur radios predate noise-cancelling headphones by decades.
