Loved seeing this video today, when coincidentally I am 2 days post hysterectomy. Mine was actually due to a tumour that grew to be over a foot long on my ovaries, the doctors wanted to take out my ovaries so it didn’t grow back and we opted to do a total hysterectomy instead. Mine though was abdominal, so right down the Center of my stomach I have a large incision. Loved hearing your story Alex, good on you for getting it done!!

Fuck lets go bud! 💪🏻 I literally just had mine a couple weeks ago and it was quite the wild wide. The post bleeding has been the hardest part for me where it still can happen as your healing ( the surgeon did warn me that there might be another spell of bleeding around the 3-4 week mark so just try to mentally prepare for that ) but at least it doesn't last forever and then its freedom! I hope you continue having an amazing recovery and take it easy my dude ❤

Been watching you since 2014 iirc because we are about the same age and began transitioning at the same time and always seem to get the same side effects (im on the verge of shaving all my hair off rn cause balding is a bitch). I'm glad you got this done because I fully understand and share all your worries etc. I haven't gotten this op myself yet because I am on the waiting lift for bottom surgery and the funding got approved last year so it will be part of that package deal xD All the best, mate, very informative so thank you very much as always.

The bleeding after surgery must have been because of the tear because you shouldn't be bleeding after a hysterectomy I know I didn't bleed at all after my cavectomy and I don't understand why you need a pessery, why cant they just take the whole vagina out, you're a man not a woman

​​@@treehugger4682it's normal to have some blood after hysto, I was experiencing it for some days. Cavectomy is another procedure, it's variable.

@@treehugger4682 You can bleed after a hysto. My doctor already warned me that that's likely to happen. It shouldn't be gushing though, more like spotting.

I had a complete hysterectomy and oophorectomy done at 18 in 2016. I'm in the US and, at the time, the legal system couldn't require for an individual to undergo surgery to be granted a gender marker change. It was downright illegal on the federal level. I had 4-5 hearings over the course of a year and none of the judges would grant me my gender marker change despite having been on T for almost two years BECAUSE I had a female reproductive system. So I got it done. Honestly, it was like getting my tonsils out. It was all done laparoscopicly and I've got no scars from it. I had an elderly male doctor and a middle aged female doctor as part of my care team. They didn't bat an eye and they treated me just like every other person. They made me as comfortable as possible. I didn't have to take estrogen but I did have to stop taking T a week or two prior. I was only in the hospital overnight. After surgery they came in once or twice to clean me up and take my catheter out. Otherwise they didn't fuss with my downstairs. I only took a day or twos worth of pain killers. Shoot, I felt well enough to move my tempur pedic mattress off the bed frame to the floor so that I could get in and out of bed easier. I was bloated and sore but it truly didn't last long. My insurance company agreed to cover the full cost of the surgery until I filed for my name change. They dropped me but later reinstated me with a co-pay. At the time, it was a massive deal but I'm 8 years on T now and I hardly ever think about it. It did take a while for my hormones to adjust but once they did I felt super peaceful and even if that makes sense. I will say, if you have it done you cannot stop taking T. I went a year off of T because finding an Endo that is trans-informed here is HARD and I felt like dog shit. Pre-T my levels were naturally 75 ng/dL. A year off my levels were dead 0. Now that I've had it done, I don't have to worry about cancers, pap-smears, surprise periods (I had PCOS and bled heavy for 4 months daily because of T), competing hormones, etc. My only regret is not freezing my eggs. I've no desire to have children but I do with I had the option. It's all about sacrifices at the end of the day and I believe it's fully worth it. Hopefully by sharing my experience I've provided some food for thought to those considering this procedure.

I was reading some Reddit threads about examinations down there and oh boy, so many people have bad experiences, it's fucking shocking. I think it would be totally understandable for anyone to do what you did just to not have to go through that. It's 2023, people should not have to be traumatised by going to the doctor anymore. Also where I live - people with a uterus who are over 23(?) get an HPV test kit home as an alternative to having a smear test. It's so much simpler, you put a swab (like in a covid test) into the cave and that's it. No invasive, huge objects being inserted there. Since it tests for HPV - what causes cervical cancer, it should really be the only necessary thing to do.

That’s a really good idea! Just to say though, HPV isn’t the only thing that can cause cervical cancer, and so isn’t the only thing that the smear tests for 🙃

I got my surgery date for hysto 3 days ago. Which is the 21 of December. I was very anxious of being on Christmas break with family during my coming out of surgery. @wadi2208 I have an actual tumor on my ovary and the doctor says I most likely have endometriosis. So no, I'm not going to regret removing something I'll never use and that's actually physically harming me. I've actually had top surgery, brain surgery, two implants for my bladder, and an adnoidectomy, tonsillectomy, and a uvulectomy. I regret none of the surgeries I've ever had. You're talking out of your ass.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us Alex, I'm transmasc and also had a traumatic experience having a hysterectomy last year. I am honestly still recovering, mentally and physically from healing complications I experienced. This was a tough video to watch but I can't tell you how relieving it is to know I'm not the only one to have such an experience and to hear about someone else knowing a little bit of what it was like. Thank you for sharing your experience Alex. Im a trans guy too. I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy last month and i was so damn worried about the staff but they were all amazing and i was given a side room. I stayed overnight and i was the opposite with many things. I struggled to pee, they had to scan my bladder to make sure it was passing through normally. Apparently that is kinda normal after general anaesthesia, i experienced bleeding only on day of discharge and i haven't experienced any since which is amazing. Day 1 post op i went out with my parents and walked along the coast verrrry slowly and like a penguin, basically waddling out of fear id burst my stitches but it was all good. I took paracetamol only for 2 days post op but jeez, the back pain. It was baddd but luckily short lived. I wish you all the best for the rest of your recovery :)

I’ve just had my hysterectomy. I’m a bisexual gender fluid she/they. I had it for medical reasons. But watching this has prepared me for the post op pain. That gas pain is next level!!!

Every time I get a pap smear, I Google getting a hysterectomy due to the discomfort, until I forget it until the next test. 😅 I procrastinated (on purpose) on getting it done, as I was already a year and a half overdue. I would love to get out of it, because I literally don't use the cave. But my doctor says that I'm only 85% safe from not having sex. 😔 For sure I'm always dry. I can only be grateful that my doctor, who I've had since before my legal change, tries her best to make her patients as comfortable as possible. She didn't want to open me too much that I hurt. She was afraid that she couldn't get enough samples from me but it was actually all fine. Also, probably a good idea to 💩 beforehand, because I was extra tight from not doing that. 😅

as a cis woman i know your pain of getting looked at down there, my cave is never explored or used so every time i get an excavation the pain is terrible like i nearly pass out and screaming and feel like almost like ive been r***d. i'm currently waiting on getting my cave explored by a professional at a hospital instead of the normal gp. a few times I've thought about getting a hysterectomy, my partner and i dont want children, so i've no need for any bits. but at the same time the recovery and the aftermath i might not be able to cope with. Also turning you down for the op is stupid because a hysterectomy starts from 8k and cancer treatment starts form about 30k for one cemo treatment so it could save money in the end (just by a quick search)

I still don't get why people that never used that area, and thus are not at risk for HPV are required to have a smear test. We are not women and have other risk factors. It is true that trans man are at risk for cervical cancer, but you don't get HPV out of nowhere.

I’ve been one T for 5 years now and I have been also thinking about getting a hysto done soon. This is very insightful info! I have similar feelings around obgyn and doctors touching in that region. I had one pap smear in my life and that was the last one I will ever voluntarily do. I cried and didn’t have anyone there to support me. There was a bunch of medical students observing too and no one asked me if I was okay with it.

I had an ultrasound and yes it hurt. It was a lady that did mine. When my hormones were low I would start to get cramps and some spotting so I knew my period wanted to happen. It was very easy for me to qualify for the surgery. I was twice as nervous about this surgery than the top surgery. I put my mine to it and made myself pee. The catheter was going to hurt. They tried putting it in. Men also have estrogen but just not as much as women. I was never bloated but I was sore. I was up the entire night in the hospital the nurses were talking to each other with every shift.

I'd love a video of tips for hystos for trans guys! I really want one too for similar reasons as you did, but particularly to avoid having to have another pap smear ever again because they're super traumatic for me. I've heard doctors say it's "better" to preserve the cervix after a hysto if possible, but I'm like, no that would would defeat like 80% of the reason I want one lol. I've never heard anyone else say they got one in part to avoid gynecological exams before so I really appreciate the video; made me feel less alone!

amazing video. I've been on T for about 2.5 years and constantly struggled w my dose and switching from shots to gel. I got my hysterectomy because despite being on T and a pill to stop my period, i bled nonstop for 5 months. I'm 4 weeks post op now and still in some kinds of gut pain with questionable cave bleeding (I've had my mum convince me several times it's impossible to be my period, but m still paranoid), so I'm actually watching trans hysto videos now since i didn't pre op. I'm very comforted by yours being my first to watch; i have not done any of the estrogen gel they've given me despite being told it would help heal, and maybe I'm still bleeding because of that but like I'll do it!! no thanks. i dont have other trans friends to talk about this surgery with, but I'm very grateful men like you post their stories so i can feel less alone

the irony of this video popping up on my feed 6 days after my own hysterectomy edit: I genuinely don't understand why it's such a big deal for *other people* why someone would choose to get a hysterectomy. I got mine as part of lower surgery and it was a massive relief because I was having bad cramps constantly beforehand! Thankfully had the smoothest recovery with zero pain or bloating and I did my blood thinners in my leg so it wasn’t as bad as belly

I had to have an abdominal scan due to some slightly abnormal levels after bloodwork and my technician and radiologist were rude, wouldn't answer any questions and left me with bruises all over my stomach (all of it ended up being a fluke in my bloodwork and everything was fine). I can't even imagine how traumatic your experience was in that situation. You are a brave and amazing human being and thank you for sharing your story!!!

I’m currently fighting on multiple fronts to get a hysterectomy myself. I’m 7 years on T, over a year into the battle, with no end in sight. It’s messing me up big time. And my smear was traumatic, so yeah I can definitely understand the fear being too much for you before- I don’t want to have to have another ever again. My reasons are the same as you but without the atrophy, and add the unbearable anxiety of accidental pragnate, and pain which I’m p sure is my ovary.

It’s amazing how different the process is here in the US, or at least where I am. Just had mine done late June and also had atrophy. I was torn as well, both internally and externally. Rather than keep me in the hospital, I was hurried out immediately after waking up. The catheter was already out and they made me pee while laying there. Then I had to stand up and walk to the other side of the area and they rolled me out in a wheelchair. It was really rough because I don’t handle anesthesia well so I kept feeling like I would be sick or pass out. The ride home was horrible as well. Anyways, using the bathroom was super painful, and unfortunately, I had to poo same day. The bleeding was traumatic to me as well, and I hated having to use protection to avoid ruining clothing. Happy you’re doing better, and although I hate you went through this, in a way it’s reassuring to hear how our experiences were similar.

I hope this isn't prying too much, but was there ever any thought to getting 'the cave' fully removed? I know some guys do that, but not sure of the pros and cons. Or were you thinking down the road about bottom surgery and wanting to have available tissue? And did you get all the parts removed? Sorry if you mentioned any of this and I missed it. I'm hopefully getting my hysterectomy next year and all these decisions are stressful. BTW, congratulations! I'm glad it seems to have (mostly) gone well for you!

I’m a biological male so female organs are a mystery to me, but since a great many women have this surgery all the time it’s not unique or odd and is nice and routine. I understand the potential trauma of experiencing it as a man, but again, I hope that’s something increasingly familiar to the medical world.

I'm getting a Hysto in March, but I'm keeping ovaries for now... I started T 2 years ago and in the first year, I didn't have a cycle, in the 2nd year, it was regular. And I've had kind of slow changes and weird stomach pains in general, and yes, the anxiety of this was enough for it. And too, dysphoria of knowing they're there. I'm going to be so happy to have it out. I am worried about keeping my ovaries as they may still go through cycles, but I'm keeping them in case I lose access to T, because I'm not menopausal age, and for bone health as I was anorexic for half of my life. Thank you for sharing your experience! I am nervous af. Never had a surgery before.

I will get hysterectomy on the 25th of January. My surgeon is a wonderful human being, he's very open and friendly, very respectful. I feel quite at peace with the surgery but I also know to expect to possibly feel horrible and to be ready for it, ahah.

i both had my mastectomy and hysterectomy on march 27th of this year! (yes. both in one 3 hour surgery) it was absolute hell the hysto is what hurt the most, i didnt get 3 small cuts and a removal through "the cave" but i got a about 4-7 cm wide cut on my lower tummy. and it was all removed through that cut. i had so much pain when i woke up and i remember i was constantly yelled at to keep breathing cause apparently i wasnt breathing well by myself, if i was breathing at all ig. my catheter was already removed as i was still in the wake up room. so like.... 6 hours after surgery. I was on that station for 6 hours cause i constantly slipped back into sleep lol And then i was in the hospital for another 4 days and then i still had lots n lots of pain for about a month and a half. The tip of my right nip fell off. Rip him lol I dont really mind that much now tho but it was horrifying in the moment to just see blood out of nowhere while showering and some black lil thing stuck to the fat gauze stuff. Over all everything is healed well now. I'm jealous of my hysto scar and wish that's how good my top scars would look, but ill fault my mom for that, making me do shit while i shouldnt be doing anything straining (like push a full trash bin to the front of the street. i still dont know why tf she made me do it. I was literally still wearing my compression binder at that point. i wasnt far into healing at all and it hurt like hell to use my arms for anything at all really for the first 5-6 weeks)

On the one hand, it's nice to hear and on the other, sad to hear, I'm not the only one who can't handle "down there 'cave'" exams. I dodged a lot of exams and had to change to a lot of gynos to get on the pill to stop my period. My grandfather, who was an ob/gyn would get me sample pills. It wasn't untill my 40s and wanted to honor my first partner's wishes that I braved an exam and the doctor was so understanding and considerate - it barely worked but he got a tiny sample. Then I had to switch insurance, after the COVID vaccine, my body went haywire, so I was sent to another gyno - I'm freakin' traumatized. I legit tried to crawl up and off the table. Tried going back to my one understanding gyno but he switched practices and it's been a pain to see him. Insurance has denied paying for him and have tried to send me back to the doctor who traumatized me. Insurance doesn't give a rats behind - they just want to check a box. I'm just over it. Over it on soooooo many levels. That being said - Alex - it's wonderful to see you again! You're amazing. Thank you for your open, honest sharing and welcoming us into your life for even a moment.

So wonderful to see you and get this update! I’m one of your followers who can say, “I remember when” as I found your channel in the time you were waiting to be old enough to seek transition. I’ve learned so much from you and refer anyone who will listen to watch some of your vids or read your book (which I have here). So now fast forward through top surgery, getting out on your own, a new career and today when I scrolled through my subscriptions yours of course was near the top. And as I ha$nt checked for a while want to see what’s up. Because there wasn’t “lead up” vids I missed I’m glad you included so much detail about what was up physically and mentally that brought you to the decision. Again, you are a talented story teller, Alex. You summarize it all but include little scenarios which make it personal vis a clinical run-down. You blush… cover your face, and it’s priceless. And whether you know it or not, you are able to bridge generations and create a common language. I’m a 70 yr young mother and grandmother. I would be honored to sit with any of them and share your videos if ever any wants to explore this topic, knowing that you are age appropriate for ALL of us! And that’s a rare gift. 💖 One of the things I talk most about when I bring you into a conversation is what I’ve learned about body dysphoria through you. In the early vids your pain was right there,so present and I wished somehow I could take that away. Of course I couldn’t but watching your journey, how sometimes the smallest thing gave hope, well, it was inspiring. And then there was T and Top surgery. And pretty much once the beard came in strong, life seemed so much more balanced. So having said that, I appreciate that you’ve talked here about those bits that still didn’t fit and how knowledge of care expectations to come were triggering. Of course, I hadn’t thought of any of this! I’m thinking, ‘On T, all’s good, no worries.” Never thought about atrophy! And I’m laughing because I’m long beyond my E years! Uh DUH! So thank you again. I miss seeing you with the regularity I once did but I consider that to mean you are living a full life and are engaged in your creative world. I would like do a hysterectomy but im most nervous but is the catheter I have a phobia due bad experience when was young. I get odd panic attack when see something similar a mention but fine. want to stop my cycles. there annoying, painful and im pre- everything at the moment still. good to see you again. hopefully see you soon. thanks 😊

I really appreciate your owning that insecurity surrounding misgendering. It can be a real problem-maker for us when we get so nervous and we convince ourselves that someone must be openly hating on us; because it's something that happens and we all know it and all of us have had our turn dealing with it! But sometimes being more aware of it than the amount it's actually happening, which may even be none, can definitely ruin or lessen otherwise positive experiences... It's a struggle for sure. One quote I heard recently that I'm carrying with me is, "Don't borrow grief from the future." It reminds me not to worry about something that hasn't happened yet, whether or not I'm sure it will. It's calmed me down quite a few times already. Best of luck with healing, Alex. Thank you for sharing this experience with us. I'll be keeping it in mind for myself and a loved one!!!

Hey, I'm sorry you've had so many difficulties with that area of your body, it's great that you've been able to get hysto, and I hope it helps you immensely in the long run. I had my hysto in June and it's done wonders for me physically, mentally, and emotionally. Before the surgery I honestly felt like the dysphoria I felt surrounding having a uterus was not that bad, kinda like background noise, but NOT having a uterus or that background anxiety has done wonders for my mental health in ways I didn't anticipate. It took a little bit after the surgery though, sometime after I was past the point of worrying about health complications, but I just sort of realized that not having that organ and everything that comes with it be a part of me anymore freed me of so much. My surgeon had me do that insertable estrogen thing before as well as after, apparently he was aware of the risks of tearing from having trans men as patients as well as post-menopausal cis women all dealing with atrophy in the area. I wish this kind of information was more widely known in the medical field. Our care seems to be so much of a mystery for so many doctors. Hope you heal well and no longer have to think about it any more!!!

your reasoning is valid no matter what. i’m american and been on T for a few years now and have been terrified to get anything done besides that for the same reasons (plus because it would cost me an arm and a leg to even get the tests to start that process to more debt..)

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Alex. Hope your recovery keeps going well. I can totally see how dysphoria can worsen during that time... but soon you've been over it and will bee totally free for the rest of your life! Try to keep in mind the final outcome and how life's going to be after recovery - I found this technique very useful during my top surgery healing process (specially that 1st week omg I was so uncomfortable all the time), so I hope it can help you too I'd love to see more videos about histo btw. I plan to do it sometime in the near future. My gyno said that I had to wait for my organs to "shrink" more before I can be eligible to do it, so for now I have to wait the testosterone to its thing. Any advice is appreciated!

Depending on your country, any doctor you see would be required to prescribe you either estrogen or testosterone as not doing so would be malpractice if you can't produce any of those hormones naturally.

You can leave one or both ovaries in to avoid this situation, that's what I ended up doing.

@@nate6045 I know someone that moved from the UK to Canada and it took them 7 months to get set up with a healthcare provider, they'd had a hysto and the NHS wouldn't give them anything to take with them because they don't technically have to. I know that's not a super common circumstance, but it's not unheard of that people can't access HRT sometimes.

@andrewb7432 One just means you produce less. It's advised to leave at least one in as it's said to reduce your risk of certain cancers and other health problems but I'm also sure that that study is flawed as it probably studied cis women.
