Fuel Pump Replacement - 2001 Ford 150, 5.4L

Thanks for the very informative and well done tutorial! It made doing this repair pretty straight forward. My '01 only has 52,750 miles so I guess it "aged out". I had 18-20 gal still in the tank, so we didn't drain the tank and used two large floor jacks to support and lower it. The hardest part of the job was getting the filler neck and vent tube hoses off the filler neck tubes. We lubed all the hoses and hose barbs with ATF and it all went back together very smooth. My (salt free) truck is truly clean and rust free, so I'm sure we had an easier go of it. The details you provided made the difference, thanks again!

Great video! I did mine about 5 months ago. 162,000 miles, 2001 4.6L. Just to add to this while the tank is out. I also, did replace all the hoses as well, as they were all pretty crusty.

Just FYI extended cab trucks and single cab trucks can be done taking off bed. Crew cab truck your going to have to drop tank because fuel pump is under cab. Just found out the hard way.

DANGER - NEVER USE A VACUUM TO CLEAN THE PUMP FLANGED HOLE OF THE TANK - THE VACUUM WITH ITS BRUSHESS WILL INTAKE GAS FUMES FROM THE GAS TANK AND COULD EXPLODED OR CAUSE A FIRE HAZARD - FIRE DANGER -NOTE!!!!!

Also if you can cut hole through bed of truck directly over pump then you don't have to remove tank ,can't do it on a crew cab cause fuel pump is under back seat.

Only 115k? lol Mines got 286k and I doubt the tank has ever been removed mind you my truck sat in a rock quarry most of its life in South Dakota so imagine what I am gonna see in the tank when I pull it down. I know the filter was clogged with dirt. Anyway very informative love how you went above and beyond for the video unlike other guys who show only half the work and say is a tutorial.

Excellent video with super clear narrative. I envy your lack of rust. My pump is ok (probably not the original), but my tank has a pinhole leak at the seam. I can't put more that a 1/4 in it without smelling vapors and seeing the wetness on the tank. No drips ... yet. Not environmentally responsible to continue to use it this way. Again, I appreciate the quality of your video. It has increased my confidence that I will not be in over my head.

This is the best video I’ve seen. Very concise, and nice and slow for easy comprehension. Very good points to clean everything up before total disassembly. I would recommend replacing all hoses while you have the tank down too. Ratcheting straps were a nice idea. The jack stands seemed to be in the way. Over all it is a very well done video. Gasoline actually floats on water, it is lighter in weight than water by almost 2 pounds/gallon. Nice details to safety also. Gasoline volume to volume is said to be 10 times more explosive than TNT. Of course, in liquid form, it is at its safest phase. Good job man!

Did this job on my 02 f150 yesterday. your idea of using tie down straps made the job much easier! I used my dirt bike style cinch type straps (not ratcheting style) to lower and raise and it really helped since the tank was 3/4 full. replaced pump motor with Bosch 69128 for $90.

It was easier for me to take the four bolts out off the bed and lift it to one side to change my pump in my 2002 lightning

EXCELLENT video.... Thanks! BTW if you turn the key to ACC I believe (mode before it turns over) the pump is enabled and already making pressure in the fuel line (you can hear it)... You should just be able to leave the key there for 10 seconds. It makes a quiet 'vrrrr ... bup!' sound right when peak pressure is met. Whichever works but try leaving it there for a few sec first to save the starter. Im anal.

where is the fuel filter on the 2013 f150 xlt? Is it in the fuel pump and how do I know if the fuel pump is in the fuel tank? Cant find the filter next to the frame.

All this complication they put on these vehicles to keep most people from doing this. And we pay for it in the cost of the vehicle. Once upon a time these fuel pumps were mounted on the engine block and operated by a cam on the camshaft from a push rod. 2 bolts to remove and for the most part, easy to get to on the engine. No electronics to go wrong. Lasted 100,000 miles and cheap to replace. But no more. The newer systems are done to make money for the car dealership shops..it's a crying shame...How many cars, trucks bit the dust because of a bad fuel pump in the tank? To replace one of these abortions will set you back anywhere from 400 to over 1200.00 bucks depending on shop rates where you are and likely more. It's no wonder some will try this extremely risky job themselves (gasoline fumes are extremely dangerous for fire, explosion) if they want to keep their vehicle on the road. In the old days, anyone that could use a socket wrench could change a fuel pump, even roadside! Try that with these pos they sell us today by the roadside...No can do friends! That's the idea! Hello dealership! Ka ching for them ! $$$$. And you? @#%$%&*.

you cannot remove the bed on a SuperCrew and expect to reach the fuel pump as the fuel tank on a SuperCrew is partly underneath the cab due to the cab being longer than a standard cab. If you remove the bed you're going to figure out that you still cannot reach the fuel pump. You still have to take the fuel tank down.

I have the exact same truck. You cannot replace the fuel pump by removing the bed. The fuel pump lies on top of the tank below the back seat of the cab. I know this because I just took the bed off my truck 2 days ago and the fuel pump is not exposed.

Use a floor Jack its easier

How do I siphon gas without the fuel pump?

You could have just pulled 5 - 6 connectors and undone 6 bolts and removed the bed to access the fuel pump dude. Way too much work for doing an easy task.

Why the cycling of the ignition key ? It's much better for the fuel pump if the key is turned to "on" and you hear a hum sound.

Thank you for such a thorough step by step install. I also have about s half tank of gas never thought of ratchet straps. I have done a couple of fuel pumps on vehicles in the past but much easier to do than this job.

Also please no shop vac. Your pulling vapors into an electric motor. Use an air hose blowing away from the opening.

you can just tilt the bed over on the right side loosen all the bed mounting bolts and take the left bolts out then remove the fuel neck screws and just jack the bed up on the left side. It is the easiest way! there are 6 bed mounting bolts you only need to remove 3 on the left side.

How the heck did you get the fuel filler tube out of the gas cap area so easy?!? Yes, I removed the bolts. Just not enough play to get it out of that neck.

I was told I had a bad one way valve on my fuel pump... so my fuel lines are not staying pressured and are bleeding back to my tank. do I need to replace the whole fuel pump or is there just a certain part I have to replace?

I heard you can you loosen the tank straps and lower just the front of the tank and you can remove the fuel pump unit without removing the entire tank? Not positive though! Hello, What a great video. So my vehicle is the same as this one, with 125 K on it. However my problem is that the gas gauge indicator needle (on the dash) seems to only go up to half now, although it will go down as the fuel level drops. It looks like you replaced all of the float with the fuel pump. Do you think this would work for fixing my problem. Seems like the same procedure.

Ya lots of fun . This is a job that takes some time . Can be frustrating getting the lines off (Fuel) Use ratchet straps (will be safer when lowering ) Make sure you have more than 1 set of release tools. I had to replace my tank as 1 of my tank straps broke free from the truck frame mount and tore the filler tube out of the tank. My fuel pump was still good (I replaced it along with all the hoses so I put all new) If your replacing your tank make sure you put new tank to frame cushion material on the tank ( I used Blue Skin used in the building industry ) 1 day to remove 1 day to reinstall everything don't rush it take your time.

When my friend and I did this about 9 years ago on my 2001, we also replaced all the fuel hoses, even along the frame, because they were just disintegrating in our hands.

One of the best tutorials out there! My only comment: Has anyone noticed in this video (as well as others) that the circular plate at the top of the pump that sits on top of the tank was rust-proof stainless steel on the old original pump. Now the replacement pumps use just a yellow zinc coating which will likely rust badly probably to the point of failing especially for those in the salt belt......another example of how difficult it's become to find quality replacement parts.

I see in video you had a hard time getting one of the fuel lines off. would be nice if you showed how you got that one off as I am having same problem. I even squirted PB blaster on it and am using the special tool. please advise?

i JUST used this video to replace the pump on my '02 F-150 Super Crew. Video was spot on. The clips on my fuel lines were a different type but everything else was great. Truck is back to running great again. VERY HELPFUL video

Good video. Only thing I’ve noticed is you cannot change the pump with the bed off on the crew cabs. The fuel pump sits under the cab and there is not enough room to pull it out unless you drop the tank. Still a great video

Does anyone know what size the lines are

Hi: When you installed the tank straps, does the strap flange at the bolt bottom out against the frame. I ask because I'm using aftermarket straps that upon final tightening with the tank firmly against the frame, the strap flange is about 3/4" shy of the frame. I was wondering if the OEM straps did the same thing?

This video is good and bad. You can not change, work on, or replace the fuel pump by removing the bed of the truck. But ill make the best of it while i have my bed off by spraying to protect the frame from rust
