FUJI G617 landscape photography on portra 400 | EXPENSIVE mistakes and a few good panoramic photos

A couple of months ago I received a very special camera: it's the Fujifilm G617, a film camera which shoots incredibly large negatives on 120 film rolls. Looking forward to starting a new photography project, I decided to take the new gear out for a couple of test rolls and yeah - lots of things went sideways. This is good though, because problem solving and learning is a part of growing in this craft - even more so when using old camera systems like this one.

It's nice to see your generation using this type of equipment, the 6x17 was always part of my professional kit, along with a 4x5 , 6x7, 6x9 and of course 35mm. I used mine with a 90mm lens. Great work !

Hey John, thank you so much for your kind comment! I've always looked up to the previous generation, back when professionals used film. I think the level of skill and "eye" was extremely high. I'm glad to be able to still use film in my daily life! Have a nice day

What a beautiful location, and no people around!! This camera is a beast. Hope you are continuing to enjoy this camera. Fuji are an amazing company and we can only be grateful they produced such amazing cameras. I don't have a 617. I do own a GSW690 which I love. And I get 4 more exposures per roll than you😂 I would love to shoot with the 617 for sure. A true panoramic.

Hey there, thank you for your comment! I'm definitely shooting with it, but life is pretty busy, and doing RU-vid on top of it is quite challenging. Fuji made some incredible cameras for sure. I love the panoramic format! If you can find one to use for a while, you'll not regret those 4 exposures less 😂 I hope you'll enjoy some nice light in your next shoot!

I like the natural atmosphere...a nice forest....even though the trees aren't thick enough...but there are some locations that are very lush....some of the trees are quite old.... Good selection of objects....

Thank you for the comment mate! The forest gets thicker down in the walley, this mountain pass is located at exactly 2000m of altitude so this is the limit for the pine trees growth here 😊

@@tdawg719 my advice would be to be "project driven" with your photography. I use my film stuff for specific projects and my digital stuff for work. Maybe you can implement some film in your work for a specific project around your area and see where it takes you! Ps the A7RV is a great camera, also for home scanning!

Hey thanks for your comment! Portra 400 has a great exposure latitude and can be "abused" more than other film rolls. At the time gold 200 wasn't avaiable, so portra 400 was one of the easiest film stocks to work with in a testing situation. The colours are also very pleasing!

@@michelefranciotta thanks for your reply it’s an interesting approche indeed, I photographed a bit on my Fuji GX617 using Velvia 50/100 and Provia 400 (still have some stocks) but the exposure is sometimes very hard to get evenly on the whole frame especially when using the 90mm lens (with central filter) I also tried Kodak Ektar 100 which is quite saturated with good results and black and white film of course ! but never thought about shooting Portra 400. I also compared the Fuji frames with photos taken the same moment with a small Sigma Quattro camera and results are very close thanks to the Foveon sensor.

@fthprodphoto-video5357 that's such a great lot of information! Thanks for sharing! You should try portra as well on your next landscape film adventure 😊 there's another video on my channel where I shoot Kodak Gold, portra 160 (didn't go well) and also B&W film during a summer trip here in the Dolomites. I've also shot some provia, slide film is absolutely great but hard to nail in terms of exposure. It is better to avoid high contrast scenarios with it...

I've seen the question now, it's called "light meter" on android. I guess there are other options for apple. I have to say it works pretty well! I also tested it in comparison with the one on the Rollei 35S and they match perfectly

Is it really very wise to use portra for your test rolls? The stuff costs an arm and leg here in Bangkok and you can't get it in Australia at any price these days.

I bought two 5-packs for around 55 euros each, that's 11 euros per roll. One of the cheapest avaiable at the time of filming. When Kodak gold came out again in 120 it also hit the Italian Market with a similar price. Now portra is around 65-70 euros for a 5 pack so yeah - it was better a few months ago 😅 it was the most convenient at the time 😊

I've never had problems getting Portra 400 here in Australia.. just have to shop around and may have to buy in packs of 5 rolls..

Have you thought of scanning the panoramic shots at home? I know nick carver does it with his 6x17 and gets fantastic results. It does take time and some effort. A spot meter might be good too, although the exposure using the phone was surprisingly good.

I scan with a mirrorless at home, this means that I would have to take multiple exposures and stitch them in post - or take one photo and end up with a very small file. Since it's a camera for special purposes, I'd rather drum scan the negatives I like and get huge tiff files to work with 😊 but if you're not into printing I think you could make it with home scanning easily anyway... for the spot meter you're right, but the app is now so good that during landscape photography I just bring the phone. Maybe for some flash action I would bring the light meter but it's amazing how accurate the phone reading is

@@michelefranciotta I Meant to ask you would use a flatbed scanner, was a bit tired 😂. Drum scanning is usually expensive, so it might be good to scan with a flatbed initially and only scan the photos that you think are 100% worth it, that way you don't go bankrupt scanning film 😂.

@IDuBStepSZ oh got it, I actually tried flat bed scanning those, but the results were honestly pretty bad 👎🏻 and I tried at a lab so I wasn't motivated to buy something for home. As a preview file or social media content tho, mirrorless scanning is good enough. You can find a RU-vid short with my very basic setup, which I commonly use with 35mm film rolls 😊

@@IDuBStepSZ thank you for the tip! A lot of people use digital scanning over flat bed scanning tho, like for example Kyle McDougall who I really look up to in terms of film photography. At the end you should always see what works the best for you 😚

It is, but the quality of the scans and the service is great. I would advise everyone trying to get scans for their medium format film project - if they intend to print big. Once you have the digital it's here forever so it makes sense to spend a little more for a premium result.

@Wild Stork I mean, in my opinion, it depends on the destination for the scans... I guess for social media or digital use in general it can be a little overkill, but for printing purposes it might as well be worth it. That being said, I only scan these humongously huge 6x17 negatives because I have a big project with big prints incoming. I scan 35mm at home with my Sony camera 😊
