This is a STILLS review of the Fujifilm X-H2. A camera that has so much potential but is held back by a few issues.
For those asking about my settings:
Mostly I was shooting the Fuji X-H2 like this:
Autofocus Continuous
Wide/Tracking
Face/Eye Detection Setting: Eye Auto
Here is a gallery showing the issues in still photos: express.adobe.com/page/znrEr5...
I have tried Zone as well and made sure the "face" was within the zone with similar (poor) results. I have also tried to change the tracking sensitivity to stay on the subject more and didn't find much of a difference.
When I'm using the Sony or Canon with pretty much the same settings (on the Sony, for instance - "Wide" focus area - "AF-C" - and Face/Eye Subject "Human") - I'm getting the results I expect shooting side-by-side and with rarely a focus error, even for fast-moving subjects. The X-H2 just isn't doing a great job for me.
After five more portrait sessions since I did this video, I have found that I'm getting the worst results with the Fuji 18 1.4 and 33 1.4 combinations, but it's still hit or miss even with telephoto lenses.

Hey, everyone! I've had a lot of people telling me that I might be using the camera incorrectly, or that the camera is, perhaps, defective. People are always so quick to say you are doing something wrong. I think people need to stop making excuses . I love the Fuji system . I love my X-H2s but, when there is an issue you should be able to say so. When cameras like Sony and canon just work the Fuji should. With all that being said I think the AF still needs some tweaks but, compared to previous Fuji cameras . The new ones just work a bit better in AF. The Xh2 needs somemore firmware tweaks. You should have to be fiddling with settings all the time that's nonsense in my opinion.

@@aurimaspovilionis3304 I've had it for over a month. I think although it's not Sony level or Canon level it is very dependable. It finds eyes through sunglasses ( something the previous cameras absolutely cannot) , it finds eyes on skulls without eyes in them. It stays on my eye in most cases and hunts a lot less than my X-T4 and X-S10. There definitely needs to be some more improvements but, for what I got so far I'm happy with it. I really hope they add a video AF tracking system. Then for me it would be perfect.

Hi Jerred, great review, thanks. I had a Fuji set with X-T2 and a few lenses for some years. I sold the budy and the kit lens and wanted to upgrade. I shoot landscape, portraits, travel, some streets, so I was wondering is the AF is such a big problem in these cases. Alternatively I checked the Sony a7 iv, like the FF sensor, but would need to change the full set of lenses. I like the X-H2 body, the ergonomics, the EVF, the size. Do you think the your AF experinces would be OK to keep the Fuji set for the above use cases? Thanks

There was just a firmware update for the X-h2 that addressed the Auto focus problems. Haven't had a chance to fully test it, but from the little bit of shooting I've done after the update, a lot of the problems that I had before, similar to your experiences, have been fixed! Still probably a few more issues that need to be fixed, but considering that it's only been a short while since the camera has been released, I have faith that Fuji will iron out more of the issues as time goes on.

I updated the camera and it’s doing better but still needs more tweaking. Yesterday I was shooting bugs and although I got some great shots, others were out of focus even though the camera was telling me that the bee it was tracking on a flower was in focus. I was a little disappointed by that. But on the other hand I’ve been able to track flying butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies on bird tracking mode so there’s that. 😂

@JerredZ
@JerredZ Год назад
Honestly, it's not a real contest. The GFX files are on a different planet in almost every way. So much more information and ability to edit. The XH2 files are VERY nice, which is one of the reasons I love Fuji, and the extra megapixels helps in the editing station - but the GFX really is on a different level with the larger sensor and glass made to resolve at the highest resolution.

Oh yeah... but the cost would have been through the roof, right? HOWEVER - I also think there's a decent chance Fuji fixes this through firmware. Hey Jerred, thank you for bringing up the AF-C + EYE/FACE detection issue for stills. I have owned the XH2 for almost a month and used it for 3 portrait sessions with the latest firmware update. I tested different AF-C + EYE/SUBJECT settings to resolve this weird issue for stills but to no avail. It's even odder that the AF-C +EYE/FACE Detection works so well for video! I shot 3 portrait videos and the AF-C tracking is 100% accurate. I'm hoping this can be fixed with a new firmware update. For the time being, I will shoot under the typical FujiFilm limitations - AF-S + Single Point with detection turned off.

Great review Jerred, thanks! I would love to buy into the Fuji system, and when the AF and lens selection matches Sony probably will. Fuji colors, how they feel in the hand, and price-point are all excellent. Traded my Z6ii for the A7iv and love it's customization and lens selection/price. Hoping by the time the XH3 comes around Fuji or 3rd Party glass will be able to match the resolution... and they put back the front/rear dial button (the assignable button on the dials was one of my favorite features when I rented the XT-4). Thanks again!

@JerredZ
@JerredZ Год назад
The X-H2 hasn't gotten a major firmware update to the autofocus yet, but I've read they are going to release one sometime (hopefully soon?). And honestly, it's only bad in some situations - for landscapes, nature, portraits - it's pretty great. For moving subjects, it's not as good, but not "bad" either. The situation where it failed pretty badly in this video isn't something everyone deals with all the time. Outside of that situation, the autofocus has been good, but still not as good as the A7iv. If autofocus is a top priority, the a7iv or even the X-H2s works really well.

Also never experienced the focus tracking issues you seem to have. But Fujifilm is for sure not the best AF out there. I come from a 5D4 to an XT3 and Focus is significantly worse. Even now. But it is good enough for me at the moment. I am not a Pro so nothing critical here and as you said: a lot better than the XT3 and XT4. I would say it is similar to Panasonic: one good focussing system away from the perfect camera. The S5 II fixed the focussing so I have hope 😁

I have the XT3 and I experience the exact same focus issues that you describe. At first I believed the issue was caused by some of the lens I use. I thought it was a lens problem. I have learned a few work arounds that have helped me get a higher keeper rate. First I do not use eye focus and do not trust it at all. Most often I use spot focus / center focus. Second I went into the custom focus menu and set up a new custom focus for portrait. My keeper rate is much better. Also my keeper rate improves if I shoot from F5.6-F8. Fujifilm definitely has some work to do with the focus system. That said there is so much about Fujifilm that I love. Not planning to change systems. I wish Fujifilm would do nothing else but work on getting their focus system fixed.

Thank you for this, I always enjoy your channel for honest feedback on gear and topics. I bet the culprit here is the lack of stacked sensor. XH2S seems more reliable for AF than the XH2 (perhaps you can confirm this), and that the AF system/algorithm enjoys the perks of the stacked sensor. To put the same AF system in the XH2 with no stacked sensor... something prolly gonna give, and being weird and erratic is probably a symptom of that. I dunno... I feel Fuji shoulda taken more time and just released a single XH2 unit that was a stacked 40mp (even albeit at a higher price point). To split it up the tech like they did might seem to make sense on the surface but even if we look at video (for example) the XH2 can still do things like 8k recording that the XH2S cannot, yet this model is supposed to be the video centric camera?... bit weird. And now possibly we are really noticing some gremlins from compartmentalizing software and hardware. If they wanted to cement the division categories a bit better, then the flagship should be a single XH2 40mp stacked sensor camera and the XT5 a 26mp stacked sensor. Done. It's all getting a bit messy imo because they rushing tech out too quick. As an XT4 owner I'll be skipping on all the latest body releases and waiting for the XH3/XT6 where hopefully it is a stacked 40mp system, but overall I am not unhappy with the direction of the company.
@JerredZ
@JerredZ Год назад

@@JerredZ Yeh, I already feel a distrust with the AF of the XT4, I'm not sure I want the expense of upgrading to the XH2 and still be left with the same lack of confidence with the AF, it needs to be rock solid. i was sold on the XH2s when it came out! wow a double stacked sensor, etc! Then I figured I'd better wait for the XH2 and the XT5. coming from the XT4, I absolutely require faster AF and after getting into some action shooting, I need to get rid of the black out and be able to shoot wild life and other fast moving subjects, or even a person moving around (the XT4 loses the face and eyes way too much for me!). So then once I found out about the 40mp sensor on the XH2 and XT5 I was now faced with a lot of decisions. I'm still sort of going back to the XH2s so all my bases are covered, but the idea of having a 40mp camera that can be used with "most" of the lenses I already own is tempting too. at this point I'm even considering the XH2s And the Xt5 (and selling the XT4 or just keeping it around). @JerredZ Год назад
Steven, I probably could have said that in my video, eh? Honestly, it was with everything I could throw at the continuous autofocus. On single it works about as well as anything else on single autofocus. Heck - even the old Canon 5D that I shot like 100 weddings with could hit focus with single AF. But for me in today's environment, even the Canon R7 and R10 can do continuous focus face and eye tracking without much issues, and those are cheaper cameras, definitely not "flagship" status like the X-H line. I mostly used Wide, but switched to zone just when I thought I was crazy to force the camera to recognize the face. Again - one of the frustrating aspects is that the camera seems to show a focus box around the face/eye... but it just doesn't stick like it should. Again - it's just a confidence killer when I've used so many other cameras that stick!

@@JerredZ Top Tip: never ever use Wide Tracking on Fujifilm! It doesn’t work!! Instead, when you are in AF-C, choose Single Point, position the focusing box on any area on the frame for composition, turn on eye AF, use Back Button focus (AF-ON), press down AF-ON button, without release, position the focus box on your subject, wait for the camera to rack focus (which should be more or less immediate with the new LM lenses) and find the eye, then you are ready to press the shutter release to shoot. Keep your AF-ON button pressed down for moving subjects and the XH2 / XH2S will keep tracking. This works for me and my pro work 99%. I don't think you were too close to the child's face to focus on the eye, since the end result was front focused, on the bridge/nose. But perhaps you mean the camera just had to work harder. Bit late to the party, but your review is pretty much spot on. Great in so many ways, but that focus issue needs to be addressed. When it does focus, its great, so that rules out the sensor and focus capabilities of the camera. My money is on the sloppy AI programming. The eye system does a fantastic job of finding eyes, but instead tends to focus on the nose more so than not. Trust me. I own a greyhound, and have some of the best dog nose shots in town. Your sample of the boy's nose show's the same problem. My D90 gives this focus system a run for it's money. I personally think its an algorithm issue that can be fixed at the firmware level, so lets hope Fuji is making this their top priority.

I can say that if you photograph a cat looking out a window on a cat tree, the Fuji did a bit better. 🙂 So far that has been my only really taxing use of the AF for stills. I can say that I do A LOT of solo video with eye AF in the woods with trees behind me and the XH2s and XH2 are just absolutely glued to my eyes (for video.) Just like the Sony's were and unlike any other Fuji I've used - XT4, XS10. The hunting is gone. And the last thing I'll add is it does seem like Fuji is tweaking the hardware with firmware actively. I got my XH2 3 weeks after they came available and right out of the box the AF kinda sucked. After I updated the TWO firmware releases (already) it's working much better. As far as autofocus in general is concerned - what autofocus setting were you using, what balance did you set between the accuracy and speed. It sounds like the initial issues people reported with the X-H2S before they realised that the autofocus needs fine tuning and this does take some time. Not a lot of people are reporting focusing issues with this model. I do get what you say, that some cameras work straight out of the box and that suits many people, especially those that really can't be bothered to learn how to use their camera properly. But you said that it wasn't your fault that some of your settings might be wrong..... well whose fault is it?
@JerredZ
@JerredZ Год назад
Hey, man! I get what you are saying, and I probably need to get better at making videos, eh? My real point was the subjects that I were shooting - slow moving or not moving at all... shouldn't have to be tweaked at all. I mean - out of the box, it should do what I was asking it to do. In fact, the focus indicators were telling me that it was doing fine - tracking and "seeing" the eyes... but for no apparent reason it would suddenly lose the tracking and focus on something else. This completely throws me off when it happens and lessens my confidence!

@@JerredZ I am not being critical of your videos. Don't get me wrong. And I was not referring to you, not learning the camera etc. Some cameras need more time to master. Some work better straight out of the box. I think that there is a lot of customisation that you can do to achieve better autofocus and tracking results but that takes time and the "youtube industry" doesn't always allow that. If you search Flikr for X-H2s or X-H2 you'll find a lot of great photos already. Funny thing..... everyone wants to concentrate on autofocus but even the Nikon's aren't that bad at it and a lot better than my 7D Mk2. At 40 frames per second, you could lose half of them and still get 20 fps in focus! What no one talks about the fact that RF lenses are extorionately expensive and Canon is not allowing 3rd party lenses. The X-H2S + the XF150-600 is nearly as cheap as the R7 + the RF100-500 (£4400 - £4150) - without the drawbacks of the R7.

The autofocus problem of the Fuji cameras was a problem I had on my X-T3/XS-10 before switching to an A7III ages ago and now my A7IV. I'm now looking to go back to the X-H2 and sell off my A7IV for the Fuji system yet again due to JPEG recipes, better EVF/display and just fuji colors can't be matched. As for the Autofocus problem, photos and eyeballs would say they're in focus and the eye-af would say it's locked on in so many occasions but then reviewing the photos in post I see that the photos are just out of focus and look terrible I'm just let down in the end. I'm still unsure if it's the right idea to sell off my Sony gear for the X-H2, I do have in mind the lens that I would like to get and that is the 23 1.4 LM WR and the 17-70 Tamron, that would make a complete kit for me since I absolutely love the 35mm focal length and would like to have a zoom to just complete the rest of the kit. I'd love to know your opinion on the X-H2 so far since coming from the A7IV. I do get paid for work with my A7IV so I'm considering just picking up a wide-angle zoom and calling it a day alongside with my 35 1.8 my absolute favorite focal length (hoping to get the 35 GM soon). I made a huge list of upsides and downside of the XH2 and the A7IV versus each other and asked if I should get the X-H2 and majority said the X-H2 so I'm a bit lost at the moment.

The part I find curious here is I've watched a number of reviews where people have recorded the eye tracking and the green indicator on moving humans, then displayed the still image..the eye has tack sharp. In the 30 frames they took, some were out, but the majority were crisp. I am not trying to start a flame war here, or passionately defend fuji...but what one user found a problem, another user has demonstrated that this wasn't a problem for them at all. Maybe a manufacturing quality issue, maybe the early release was bought to market too quickly? Maybe its the body firmware and the lens firmware aren't 100% compatible..It just seems strange that issues aren't adding up square if you know what I mean? Canons overheating issue was an issue on all units. The focusing system is a difficult one to underline. Some people experience it, others have stated its never been a issue...makes it hard to figure out if its a good purchase for myself or not.

Then it dawned on me that the little square around the eye may indicate that the camera has identified the eyeball but hasn’t quite gotten it into sharp focus. A slow focusing lens would certainly exacerbate this problem. Perhaps I was experiencing a user error or perhaps it’s a flaw in the used camera and lens I’m evaluating, but it’s shaken my confidence in king Sony’s witchcraft level autofocus. @@JerredZ I think one of the challenges of shooting multiple systems is the way it shapes our expectations and shooting habits. This is one reason to find a system you like and stick with it. It is true that Fuji is emulating the Sonys and Canons with their eye tracking features (and the body design, *grumble grumble*) but I think it is worth reminding ourselves that despite the trend toward homogeneity in camera features across brands, the Fujiis are the most quirky, sometimes very much on purpose. If autofocus is your priority, I would never choose a Fuji camera, and that might be true for a long long time. Or, I should say, if using auto eye tracking is your priority-because I usually have no problem using single point AF and getting the shot. That is, I don’t use these cameras the same way I use other cameras, and I prefer it. If you don’t, it is a sure sign to spend your money elsewhere. For most, the shooting experience of a Fuji is important in other ways, precisely because it doesn’t necessarily adhere to a philosophy that “it is 2022 and this or that should be a given or built a certain way in 2022.” To apply that to Fuji cameras is really to miss the point, respectfully.

However, on the downside, the camera would absolutely freeze sometimes and not allow me to reposition focus. Other times, now of the buttons would work. That means I'm missing shots. And then there's the 3 to four seconds it takes to actually start up... missed shots. Nice camera, but I can't buy it of I have to take the battery out to get it to where it'll actually record images. Hopefully, the GFX-100 won't give me that kind of response when I rent it.

It’s interesting to hear that your copy of the XH2 struggled in AF, especially when the XH2S was fine. I’ve had the XH2 since it was launched and had nothing but full confidence in the AF, speaking as someone coming from the XT4 (I still have my XT4 as a backup or second camera). I’ve been shooting pre-wedding portraits, theatre and performing arts events as well as street photography with my XH2 using the 18 1.4, 33 1.4 and 50 F1, and haven’t had any problems with eye AF and AF even wide open, except with the 50 F1 at F1 when the subject is walking towards camera, sometimes losing AF. But for portrait subjects, it has been perfect. When I used my XT4, I never ever put it on AF-C knowing that nothing will be on focus. But the XH2, i mostly leave it on AF-C with either single point or zone focus (i never use Fujifilm’s wide tracking, even on XH2, it’s still not accurate). Also, did you use back button focus? On the XH2, if you set up with back button focus and keep pressing it during AF-C, it will track accurately. Also, i only use 15fps mechanical shutter, absolutely no AF issues at all. I honestly think it maybe your particular copy or some settings not quite right. I’ve quite a number of colleagues also switched to XH2 and XH2S and have nothing but praise for the AF, mind you, non of them do sports and birding.

@@bbasleigh6149 it all depends on your own personal needs. Both the X-H2, X-H2S and X-T5 are catered for different use cases. I’m a stills only photographer and chose X-H2 over the other two cameras because I shoot portraits and events where image quality, comfortable ergonomics (deep grip) and the ability to change settings quickly without needing to take my eye away from the viewfinder as my top priorities. The X-H2S has no image quality upgrade from the X-T4 that I was shooting with already, and I don’t need the speed and video specs so I didn’t get it. The X-T5 has the same 40MP sensor as the X-H2, and while I still love the X-T’s analog styling, the grip is way too small for a comfortable hold while mounting heavy lenses and the analog style is just not fast enough in operation speed for me to change settings on the fly (as is the case with my X-T4). I’m keeping my X-T4 for street photography. Your mileage may vary. But if you don’t mind the flip out “vlogger’s” screen and don’t really need 40MP resolution, then getting a used or new X-T4 maybe a good enough upgrade from the X-T3. The battery and IBIS alone is worth the upgrade, especially now that the X-T4 price will drop. But one thing I can be certain of, speaking honestly as a pro-user, the X-H2 IS very good, consistent and reliable in AF and tracking, at least for me (you do need to know how to set it up) and is miles ahead of what my X-T4 can do. Is it Sony level? I don’t know and frankly don’t care as I could never ever get passed Sony’s poor ergonomics, poor coatings on body and lenses and poor skin tones

I only use face AF when its straight forward and i know it will work. I never use AF-C unless my kids are on the move. For portraits or any kind of still pics, AF-S is 100% more reliable. I also often use zones instead of face, because its more reliable. When i film myself for YT vids, I put the AF box on my face and enable Face AF, that way if the face AF loses me when i turn my head, it reverts to zone and keeps from racking focus to back or room. I never shoot static portraits with AF on. This is asking for trouble no matter what camera you have because if there are more than one people in the frame then even the best AI will not read your mind and quess what person is your main subject, so results will vary way too often. For me single point focusing and recomposing will always remain the best way to nail the perfect focus reliably, and it's no trouble at all if you shooting static portraits (in fact it's fun thing to do). if I absolutely need to use AF feature (people who are walking very fast) even older fuji cameras nails the focus most of the time, so it's not a big deal. I guess people who are shooting wild animals or sports may want something with better AF (although Fuji may improve their software), but personally I'm shooting mostly portraits, so picture quality is all what matters to me. I think as of today X-H2 is the best APS-C camera in this regard thanks to it's 40MP resolution and ISO performance. On the paper ("photos to photons" noise charts) it may look like older 26MP fuji cameras (X-T3/4) have less noise, but it's only when you look at 1:1 crops. If you however match perspective on something like X-T4 and X-H2 (meaning downsample 7.7K X-H2 photos to 6.2K) then noise level is lower on X-H2 and on top of that you can apply DNR without lossing so much details, because X-H2 photos have much higher resolution. IMO even 12800 ISO photos are usable on this camera if you are only willing to put some work. I'm using topaz denoise AI and with the right settings results are amazing, and espesially if you are to downsample your pictures to something like 5K. To be fair FF cameras like Sony a7R4 / 5 have even less noise thanks to their sensor size and even higher resoluton, but they are also way more expensive (not to mention good FF lens). Thanks to topaz AI it's possible to get perfectly clean picture even at higher ISO even with APS-C anyway, so the gap between FF and APS-C is closer than ever. FF still has the edge when it comes to better dynamic range and DOF (f1.2 of APS-C will look like f1.8 on FF) but IDK if these differences are worth spending 2x more money, but I guess it depens on the perspective. If someone is loaded with money 💵💵💵💵 then good FF camera, or even medium format is the obvious choice.

@PabloB888 Год назад
@@chrisk5125 Like Jerred has proven in his video even on this expensive camera (it's cheaper than high end FF, but still fairly expensive on it's own) autofocusing isnt 100% reliable either (despite being AI powered), so you will miss the focus sometimes, and it's only worse if more than one person is filling the frame. When I started my photography journey around 5 years ago I was using autofocus modes and it was terrible experience for me, because I was never sure if my camera will nail the focus on the correct person. My first camera had switch subject joystick, but when many people were filling the frame it was taking some time until I was able to select subject that I really wanted. Later on I have learned from my teacher (successful wedding photographer) to always use single point focus and since then I get consistent results. If you arnt moving too much single focus will work literally every time, because even if you miss the focus plane a little bit people will most likely not see it on small prints (or small phone displays). If however your camera AF will focus on totally different person (lets say some unimportant waiter in front of young couple) then there's nothing you can do with such photo besides erasing it, because even on small print people will see when bride will be covered in DOF. Thanks to using single focus mode even my first wedding was a success (my subjects were always in focus plane), so I'm only passing this great advice given to me. I honestly dont need AF in most scenarios, and when I use it X-H2 can take so many photos per second than few blurry ones will not ruin my photoshoot anyway.
