When you switch to manual focus mode the AEL/AFL button will focus, you don't have to reassign the button to AF-ON. It will still lock the exposure as well in the default setting. The X100F works the same way. If you 'click' the joystick you can then change the focus point size using the back control wheel. I set the button function of the back control wheel to 'ISO' so I can switch between auto ISO settings without menu diving (on the X-E3 the ISO menu also includes all manual ISO settings, the camera does not have a physical ISO control, it's the easiest way I've found to access ISO settings on that camera, so I set the X100V to work in a similar way to keep things consistent). Some people swear by using backbutton focus, but it's not for me. If you want to *always* use backbutton focus you can set the shutter release not to focus (setup -> button/dial settings -> shutter AF), and assign AF-ON to a button of your choice.

The Instant AF Setting also applies if you have the AEL/AFL button set to "AF LOCK ONLY" or "AE/AF LOCK". In this case the AEL/AFL button enables back button focus when in manual focus mode, and the Instant AF Setting determines whether it's Single or Continuous.

Many thanks for this very helpful tuto !!! Using the view finder and AF, is it an option to be able to move the focus point, not being obliged to press the focus trigger before ? It's weird for me since moving the focus point is obviously the first action I do when switching on the camera, so why another action ?

Range Limiter: i imagine a sports stadium with some expectators in front of me, between me and the players. I can set the range limiter to not focus on the people in front of me but to only focus at the distance of the players. I think it will work better with zone focus so if i aim at the same time to a expectator (near) and a player (far) the camera will choose the player because is in the range. Also i think is better use the RELEASE option so the camera will take a picture even when it fails to choose the focus but will only focus in the range selected.

Hi Booray, I've only just recently got this camera and I'm trawling the RU-vid videos to find the best way to set it up. I came across this and it's fantastic, exactly what I want. I'm just a bit confused as you seem to be saying at the beginning that you have the rear wheel set to select both the Focus Area and the Focus Mode. That's obviously not correct so which button do you have to select which option?
@BoorayPerry
@BoorayPerry 2 года назад
Sorry for the confusion. The rear wheel is set to Focus area, which means if you click it and turn it the size of the focus are will change. The AF mode in the menu is set to All. That means that when i use the wheel to change the size of the focus area it will cycle through the different AF settings. So, say you start at the smallest focus spot and start to cycle up. It will go through about 5 sizes in "Single Point" then switch to "Wide" and do about 5 sizes before going to "wide" which is the whole screen. If you change the AF mode to say, single point, it will just cycle through those first sizes and start over never getting as big as the zone or wide sizes. :)

The range limiter, when in use, will increase the autofocus speed since the camera will only operate within the selected constraints., i.e. either beginning at 2 meters or 5 meters in the presets or in the range you set in custom. My preference is to merely zone focus with aperture and focus distance in manual focus mode.
@gwarner99b
@gwarner99b 2 года назад
I think that is right, it’s for faster focusing. My 70-300 lens for my XT4 has a switch that limits AF to more than 5 metres for the same reason. I haven’t tested whether either function really does makes practical speed difference, though

Good Morning, Booray.....I am still laughing about the video. Your humor really comes through. When all is said and done, the technology today is way smarter than all of us. Also, it is not necessarily what we need to take good pictures. So, along with the very basic setups you confirm are important, I would offer a large dose of relaxing and breathing as necessary elements to help enjoy this glorious piece of equipment. My own conclusions have been this camera requires a large dose of sneaking up on it and absorbing it over a period of time. It is not a camera one just wakes up with a full understanding of it’s capabilities and quirks. Thank you for a terrific video and just another confirmation of why I own this camera. Regards....Wayne

Range Limiter, It was a catchy tune 'standing on the corner watching.....', But if you were, and set the range to across the street for the gals to walk by' I think you could reduce the focusing time. OK, I've never tried it, but you gave me something to think about. Thanks again.
@johnnysparkleface3096
@johnnysparkleface3096 3 года назад
Yeah, I've only ever thought of the purpose of range limiter in terms of reducing back and forth hunting that contrast-detect-focusing cameras do, but that can't be what range limiter is for in this camera, since it focuses using phase detect.
@davidcoulson5229
@davidcoulson5229 3 года назад
Excellent! Can you elaborate a little on Corrected A/F frame please. Tried it and yes noticed the extra focus box - so far so good..question is: for example say one was focusing on a cup on a table with the optical viewfinder and corrected af on.. do you still point the camera at the cup as normal with it in the green box or, do you move the camera so the cup falls within the extra box?
@BoorayPerry
@BoorayPerry 3 года назад
Pretty sure it's the corrected box. The whole point of showing you that box is to show you what you are actually focusing on.

@@BoorayPerry thanks , ok am going to test it out to confirm
@davidcoulson5229
@davidcoulson5229 3 года назад
Ok, I tested it against the writing on a cigarette packet standing on a table, from a distance. If you focus using the green box as usual on the packet - the writing is sharp, if you point the camera at the packet using the dotted box it is blurred. So, have to use the usual auto focus green box. Mmmm I don't see what the other box is for in that case ...

Hilarious!. I have saved this video for the next time I feel the urge to upgrade my X100 or any other camera. I have used an AF Range Limiter function on my 150-600 zoom lens on a DSLR for surfing photography. I used to use a version of "Store AF Mode" on a DSLR for events, until David Ziser told me to shoot all landscape and crop if I need a vertical. But for the X100 series? Good Grief! Great video !!!
