I watched this video when the camera first came out, but I wasn’t in a position in my photography career to get a “fun/travel/everyday” camera. I always wanted the X70 but just never got it. Five years later I finally purchased one and I couldn’t be more excited. Family thinks I’m crazy for spending so much ($550 usd) on an old camera, but it’s the camera that got away lol. I’ve owned many Fujifilm cameras dating back to the original X100, but this X70 is a little living legend. Thanks for a great review.

@@MaartenHeilbron thank you sir. My family took one selfie that at the time, I didn’t think of much. We later printed that photo, framed it and I look at it daily. When I pass it by I am reminded of how much fun we had in such a short time. We received our X70 today and have already taken some memorable photos. Hope you are doing great and having a wonderful week.

Yes, the film simulation is only applied to the pegs, but you can also able to apply the film simulation in Lightroom by choose the profiles from the camera calibration to process the raw with the same look as sooc JPEGs.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 8 лет назад
+manchumuq Yes, of course - thanks for adding that tip. You can also do the same to RAW files in camera in playback mode.

Thank you Mr. Maarten for the review! Owning a proper camera has been my dream since a child, your video stimulates me to work harder to get there. That might sound a little strange, but in my shoe, it is not easy to buy one. I hope that by sharing my thought I could show how much thankful I am for your review. ps. sorry for my broken English.

Thanks to yours and also another reviewers (Mattias Burling) presentation of X70, I have now ordered one. Brand new, luckily still available in Sweden, I've tried to buy it used but in the end wouldn't trust the E-bay. There are sometimes customs & taxes involved when buying from abroad so I'd end up paying the same as for this new one. And, I'll have a.. new one in my hands. Seriously now, I was trying everything to calm down and not buy the X70, I've concentrated on the cons just to help me make that decision, but hey, the Fuji colors, physical dials on the camera, very decent lens, size, touch screen to take a photo, tilt screen 180 degrees, and my primary use - street photography and an "always carry with me" camera, that's it. Thanks also for the very good walkthrough regarding the menus, I took my notes and will work with it in depth when I get the camera. All the best!

Very thorough overview. I've been hesitant to pick this up due to what appears to be laggy focus. Definitely seems slower than my old X100S, which is surprising for the wider lens. I love the form factor.

Excellent video, thank you for going into such detail, this is exactly the kind of information people appreciate when looking to buy cameras, especially at this price. It amazes me that Fuji are so behind with their video capabilities, it's unbelievable that phones produce smoother and better quality video now. Otherwise it looks like a nice camera

Great review Maarten! I've had the X70 since the day it was released & I love it! This is the best & most in depth review I have seen for it thus far. I have learned so much about my little wonder box from your video. I have been trying to find a way to assign the "Sound & Flash" on/off function to a Fn button. I have not been able to do so, am I missing something, or is it just not possible. Thanks again! Best, R

nice review as always - thanks. Fuji does well in IQ - I have LX100 and the X100 and 100s - of which I find the LX100 most versatile - and it has 4k - I prefer the Panasonic remote app more then that of Fuji - Focus speed never been great on the X100s and simply horrible on the X100 :) and both poor in low light - that is where the LX100 just shines - I think the X70 will have a limited market - but will give nice IQ - I was hoping Fuji would upgrade the X30 - with a 1 inch sensor etc - :( I have the X20 as well - no AA filter and a nice looking camera but sensor to small -

i am so torn on this camera. on the one hand, i really like the portability of the device. on the other, it's fairly close in price with the x100 series cameras. now with the x100f coming, the T will inevitably lower in price, making it an even tougher choice.

Good review. Camera is nice.. $200 more than what I would like to spend for camera of this type. If Fuji could loose the old menu, they could loose the buttons on the back. If there is shutter lag, it is a no go for me as well, as the Ricoh GR's are known for being quick for the kind of photography these cameras excel at.

great review. I simply enjoyed. im thinking about the x70 but also about the em5 II. how do i compare them? i dont...i just wanted a superb image quality [em5II + 12-40] but the sacrifice of portability [as travelling light, one bag for a week duration] is disturbing me a lot. also i would appreciate the low light capability, of better night sky photography, and am thinking that the performance of x70 in low light should make me regret it. anyway, a pancake simple lens with the em5ii is not a question. and then this little cheeky premium arrived and I have no idea what to do. thanks anyway, im happy i watched all.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 8 лет назад
Thanks for the kind comment, that's appreciated. I wouldn't know which to choose either - although I've not been able to review the Olympus. In the end, my recommendation - with the feeling that cameras in the same price class are very similar is to first see if one or the other can be eliminated because of a missing feature. Then I'd let my hand and my wallet guide me. Finally, I'd choose the one that I would be proud to own, and that I would never find a reason to leave at home. Hope that helps.

Hi I have very important question to ask you: since focal length of x70 lens at eq.28, 35, 50mm is electronic and not native/real as eq.35 in x100 (and eq.28, 50 wcl/tcl), are the quality of result photos (jpeg and raw both) same for printing and exhibition presentation?

It's fairly quiet - but depending on your scene, and your sensitivity, I would certainly recommend an external mic and/or recorder if you are serious about audio. I would never suggest that the on-camera mic is useful for anything except background/ambient sound.

Fuji, based on their experience making film - which had specific colour characteristics - is leveraging some of their colour science to create specific colour profiles that simulate/emulate the looks that those films provided.

@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 8 лет назад
I have not reviewed the G5X, but those are the decision points - the image sensor (advantage Fuji which has APS-C), the viewfinder (advantage Canon), vari-angle display (Canon). The F1.8 lens on the Canon might also sway me. In my experience, I have taken some great images with one-inch sensors, a few of which, blown up to 24x36in are displayed on my walls.

@MaartenHeilbron 8 лет назад
I would not plan to shoot video with any Fuji camera other than the X-T2 (which is a delight - see some of my recent videos). For audio (I mean, for good quality audio) I would use an external recorder for both of these cameras. I use the Tascam DR-70D, but there are many options. For mics, you can used wired (like Sony ECM 44B) or wireless (like Rode filmmaker). Yes, it's a slight hassle to synchronize, but it's easy once you've done it once or twice, and even easier if you clap before you start talking. Or be a pro and use a clapboard. Hope this helps.

May I ask which brand of wrist strap you are using? Or did it come with the X70?

This strap is branded Roots.

will this camera go for photostocks?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 лет назад
I'm not sure I understand the question. If you're asking if the quality is high enough to submit/sell to stock libraries, the general answer is yes, but it will, of course, depend on your choices of lenses, lighting and locations.

You mean I can choose other lenses for fuji x70? They're kinda unchangeable?

if anything I am sorry for dull questions, for my entire life I've been using only smartphone for taking photos

Sorry, wasn't focussed when I wrote that - the X-70 has an integrated single focal length lens.

Are portraits viable with this? Or does the 28mm lens limit it?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 8 лет назад
+Viperx66 It might not be my first choice, but it would certainly work - there are the 35 and 50mm view settings. Personally I'd prefer a slightly longer lens so I don't have to be so close ...

Can you tell me how to make the flash fire. Mine isn't doing it
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 лет назад
As I no longer have the X70 here, may I suggest you check with the manual? Pages 46 and 47 provide good detail on using the flash - and the conditions under which it's not available.

Hello Maarten. I'm in the market for a "b-roll" camera, for video. (I already have a GH4 which I'm more than happy with.) To be honest, I'd prefer not to have to spend more than a few hundred dollars. Something very "pocketable" would be great although this x70 is a bit of a stretch for me. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

@MaartenHeilbron 8 лет назад
+Hugh A N I'd go with the G7, an excellent junior brother to the GH4. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zKUZoV_xVYg.html If you can wait a few weeks, it's coming back for a G7 to A6300 comparison video.

I just discovered the remote mode using the camera with the xf10. I wanted to capture people praying in church. That's perfect. These cameras don't make a sound and I can sit looking down at my cell phone without scaring the subjects.
@MaartenHeilbron

Not sure that's an appropriate use, sounds like you're invading their privacy at what might be a sensitive time.

In your graphic it looks like you're looking through the flash, like you think you're holding a viewfinder camera. LOL. No, really, that's funny. I have an X70 and and X100S on my desk as I type and I keep stopping to pick up one or the other. Bottom line: X70 is a piece of crap for "camera guys" to post YT vids. Too small, too fiddly, no "features", let alone benefits worth the cost. Now, I've been an X guy since day 1. Still have my X100. Quirky, but usable. When I pick up the X70 it's a photo tech quest - where are the buttons or dials and do I have to take my eye off the subject to use the damn thing? Uh, yeah. Always, every damn time. Pick up the X100S? Everything is right there. The X70 was/is built on old tech with Fuji wringing the last dregs from what was groundbreaking technology. Let it go, Fuji, move on.
