This is my first wildlife photography shoot with the Fujifilm XF 150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR lens. I partner the lens with my Fuji XT3 and test the lens by doing some bird photography (mainly) and wildlife photography. While this is not a full review I do give my first impressions of the Fujinon XF 150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR lens.

Thank you for an interesting video with this lens which I'm considering to buy. Some great shots i think, however it would be really great if you could show just basic info about iso, focal length and aperture along with each image as these things can be hard to judge just from the photo itself, yet are very useful to know for people evaluating and comparing this lens to the 100 to 409 for example. Anyway, thanks again for sharing.

Hi Wayne, I missed this video earlier and I am not sure if you will get these comments but other people might find them helpful, the first minor point is that the Dragonfly you photographed is actually one of the blue damsels, either Azure or common blue, the emperor is much larger!. The second issue is the way one can assign all sorts of buttons for all sorts of purposes, my favourite is the little one on the front of the camera next to the lens that is for me in the perfect place to use for 'back button' focus, which in this case is really 'front button' focus!. My main reason for favouring this one is that it is possible to press it gently to acquire focus without moving the camera at all!, a significant issue when trying to hand hold the camera with the 80mm macro lens. I am the proud owner of the 100 to 400 and am a bit frustrated by its small aperture which demands very good light for high dynamic range, this bigger lens is even narrower and while I would love the bigger each it does cause the same issues. For a long time I was anticipating the 200mm F2 as the perfect lens and low and behold it is just far too expensive for me!. Cheers, Richard

Looks a great lens. I currently have the 100-400 with my XT4 and sometimes use the 1.4 teleconverter. I really like this lens and would love the 600 but probably would have to get rid of the 400 to help with the cost. Worried this would be a big mistake if I didn't get along with the new lens. I Will just have to start saving. Enjoyed the video
@WayneRobertsonPhotography
@WayneRobertsonPhotography 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and your comment, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The XF 100-400mm and 1.4 teleconverter served me well too so I understand your uncertainty, I think quite a few people will be torn between these two lenses. Ultimately I made the choice based on my style of photography and the subjects I shoot, I felt this lens would be best for me. Having both wouldn’t be a bad thing!

Would you recommend the body and this lens for sports photography? Mainly football, I don't want to buy too many lenses and have to switch constantly, I want to have one that I can position myself properly and get good action shots. I'm thinking about upgrading to the XHS-2 and need a lens to reach the action.
@kunalgandhi5797
@kunalgandhi5797 Год назад
@@garrett1144 yes it would be a good combo for the fast action sports! The lens is quite long but lighter than it looks. With the Xt4 I had to depend on faster lenses but here both the camera and lens are fast to capture the images :)

Excellent and un-pretentious review. Thanks. I've been using this new lens with my X-Pro 3 for the last few weeks and really enjoying it. I see that you were using the Focus Control buttons. I haven't been able to use these yet - I was under the impression that I have to wait for a Fuji Firmware upgrade in order to use them on my X Pro 3.

Thanks! The lens should work fine with your camera. The focus control buttons can be used in various ways, in the video I was using them to focus (they can do the same as the AF-ON button on your camera). If you enjoyed this video you may find my full review video useful, it's on my channel too.

I enjoyed this video. I also have bought the 150-600 lens for my XT4 but only been able to have it out a couple of days due to weather. it is winter here. I am curious as to what focus method you are using. I use single point and have reduced the size of the square mainly because I am photographing in dense foliage. I made a mistake the first day as I had put on the 1.4 extender. It was quite overcast and I ended up using too high an ISO. The second day I used it was bright light but where I was the birds were quite a long distance. Despite this an using f8 I was surprised at how shallow the depth of field is which was easy to see because I was using red focus peaking on mudflats. My shots on the second day were much better. What shutterspeed were you using for the birds in flight. I had mine set on 1/2500 but even then some were blurred.
@WayneRobertsonPhotography
@WayneRobertsonPhotography Год назад
I too use single point AF - what you said you are doing sounds correct (at times it will be difficult to get focus perfect shooting through dense foliage). Birds in flight can be a challenge and there will often be a lot of out of focus shots. The necessary shutter speed depends on the bird and what it is doing but 1/2500 would be fast enough in most situations for what I normally photograph. Often I’m using a slower shutter speed than that but faster is better if you want to freeze wing motion. I’d recommend using the lens for a while without the TC to get familiar with it. Thanks for watching!
@chrisbartlett8146
@chrisbartlett8146 Год назад
@@WayneRobertsonPhotography Thanks The bird I was having trouble with was a local kingfisher and they flutter around getting crabs but seem to move quite fast. It was certainly better without the TC and I also discovered I had a polariser on the lens that day which di not help as I lost the equivilent of a stop just from that. I am going to a place where there are a lot of slower birds so will see how I get on there. I am using slow continous at 8 frames a second but might try the high continuous to see if I can get more action shots.
@WayneRobertsonPhotography
@WayneRobertsonPhotography Год назад
A kingfisher in flight can be a difficult shot to capture sharp - your shutter speed was good for that, even faster if possible wouldn't be a bad idea. With no TC, no polariser and slower birds you should have more success - good luck!

Thanks for watching. I understand it’s a tough decision for many people. I think it mainly depends on money and your requirements regarding focal length and aperture. For me I felt the XF 150-600mm would best suit how and what I photograph.

What does the weight of the lens feel like carrying around as compared to the 100-400?
@WayneRobertsonPhotography
@WayneRobertsonPhotography 2 года назад
I often had the 1.4 TC on my 100-400mm lens. That combination versus the 150-600mm with no TC is very similar weight so I don’t notice much difference. Comparing lens for lens the 150-600mm is slightly heavier but overall I’ve not had any issues carrying it around. It’s going to be down to the individual but I hope that helps.
@9Mtikcus

How much better is it after use than the 100-400 with the 1.4X tele Better = Image quality, handling, Focus speed 560mm @F/8 vs 600mm @F/8... is not enough on its own to justify selling the 100-400 with 1.4x TC and buying the 150-600 for me thanks

I've a lot of experience with the XF 100-400mm but have not owned both lenses at the same time to compare in an ideal fashion. I've already recorded a review video of the XF 150-600mm in which I discuss all these points, it requires a lot of editing but should be available within the next week. For now and in short, based on my experiences, the new lens does offer advantages in the points you mentioned. Hope that helps for now but my review video will go into more detail.

Its kind of sad that at 600mm its F8. which make it unusable when there is less light like in sunrise hours where all the animals activity really happens. They should have made it F6.3 at the long range like sony, tamron, sigma. What is the max f-stop at 400mm?

At 400m the widest aperture is f/7.1
@Jana-BrandenburgerPflanze

Yeah, I agree. Due to that ISO needs to be up rather quickly and as we all know thats an issue at Fujis. UNFORTUNATELY
@gilleslast3561
@gilleslast3561 Год назад
You mean that 1/3 stop makes the difference, really? All those long range zooms have a clear limitation with low light situations, the only viable solution are prime 600 mm but that’s a different world. If you can’t shoot, just look.
@TheFredolegrand
@TheFredolegrand Год назад
Don't underestimate the ability of X bodies to handle high iso (up to 12800). Combined with good noise reduction software, it is absolutely useable. Of course of $6000 FF body plus a 800mm F5.6 will be much better. But not the same price point...
@heymikeriley
@heymikeriley Год назад
Not unusable at all. I’ve been shooting loons and shorebirds pre-dawn all summer. F6.3 to f8 isn’t even one full stop. Just compensate with a slightly lower shutter speed or a slightly higher iso range.
