In this video I do a full field test and review of the newly announced FujiFilm GFX100 II (2). This is an amazing medium format camera that goes above and beyond the FujiFilm 100s. There are many improvements including an updated sensor, implementation of the X Processor X, and a beefed up auto focus algorithm borrowed from the X-H2s. Feel free to hit me up if yo have any questions or comments about this new camera.

Nice video. I think AF needs to be thoroughly tested. 8fps doesn't really matter, it's just not really a good metric since it only judges how frames per second it can take and it will take a frame no matter if it's in focus or not. What matters more is the number of AF actuations per second, which is rarely published. I would love to know how it compares to the gold standard of full frame cameras, we expect this to be slower, but how much slower?

Happy to hear you liked the video. The only time I had issues with the auto focus was when my subject was spinning quickly and I had the face detection left on. A couple times it was going to back focus on me. Couple times it worked great though. Hard to say just yet what the best AF settings are. But I found it surprisingly fast, but that is subjective for sure.

Love hearing your experiences with this new camera because I'm soooo excited to upgrade my 100s to it for the increase in autofocus (I miss focus on a TON of shots with my current camera, which is sooooo annoying!) It's great hearing that it is much better. So, according to PetaPixel (in their podcast-style episodes) they had a guy kinda reverse-engineer the camera and there's some interesting things they found that differ from what you're saying here (what you're saying tracks 100% with what Fujifilm says, so I can't fault you there at all!) I'm super bummed about the long black-out in single shot mode because according to PetaPixel, the 8fps mode actually dumbs down the data a bit so it can process the images faster. So my plan was to just use single shot so I have the better image quality. But now that I see the black-out is THAT LONG, I might have to rethink that! Thanks again for posting the review! Love hearing your experiences with it! :)

No worries, thanks for checking it out and making a comment! Ya, seems like there are a couple things people are picking up on with the camera since it has been released. I am not following it all honestly, but all I know is the images I got with it are great, and even if images are getting "dumbs down" they still look amazing and are great to work with. The long black out for single shooting is what it is though, too long for my preference. I am sure the auto focus upgrade alone will make you happy you got it though! Good luck!!

I also live in Tokyo but in the work in the film industry. I am intrigued by this camera for both photos and video. It could be a monster shooting in braw. Thankyou for your thoughtful review

Jason, thank you for the useful review. FYI, Fuji makes only a 1.4x teleconverter for the GF system, not a 2.0. The 1.4x is exceptionally good and is a very good accessory for the superb 250 f/4, which is probably the best lens in the GF system. It would be helpful if you listed the GF lenses that have the ability to work fast with the fast autofocusing and tracking the GFX 100 II is advertised to deliver. Many of the GF lenses are old and stodgy and are likely too slow.

Ah, good info, thanks for the correction! A list of all the “faster” lenses would be very helpful for sure, but I don’t have access to all the lenses so that’s not something I could provide just at the moment. Maybe I’ll reach out to my FujiFilm friends and see what they recommend.

Medium format camera i think for commercial photo purpose. Either product/model. Great for landscape but i think ff enough for landscape.

I would tend to agree. For me a camera like would be great for portrait or short photo shoots with but keep my Z9 for events where I take thousands of photos a day.

You definitely gave it a good field testing 👍 Were you shooting in 16bit RAW?

I think 16bits is limited to single shot, so no.

Does GFX100 II allow easy switching between left and right eyes when using eye -AF? I see you going into the menu to do that. On GFX50s, you can customize the button but the option in GFX100s is less useful than in GFX50s. So wondering if Fuji fixed it. On Sony it is so much easier, once you assign a dedicated button.
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography 11 месяцев назад
I think you should be able to assign one of the three buttons on the top of the camera to do that. I thought it would be easier for people to understand visually if I went through the actual menu though. Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment!

Coming from the GFX100S is this camera much better in auto focus speed, eye focusing and general tracking of the subject for photography? Also is the shutter seem snappier to take the photos and less blackout between shots?

Is there the option to shoot small or medium raw? So you don’t have to use 102 mp

I love street photography. Do you have the option to shoot in silent mode?
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography 11 месяцев назад
The camera’s shutter is quite quiet already with the mechanical shutter so no real need for silent mode in my opinion. I didn’t shoot with the electronic shutter myself. You might need to try one out before buying.

Coukd tge blackout in single sgot mode be because it is still the only mode able to shoot 16 bit?

If I read the specs correctly, 8fps is 14 bit only. So if you want 16 bit output, you need to tolerate the blackout in single shot..
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography 11 месяцев назад
I would personally take the 8fps just for the quickness and ease of use.
@trollfiddler

You get 16 bit at 5 fps. It's just at 8 fps you lose 2 bits in the blackest blacks.

@@jasonhalaykophotography It was a good choice! And jokes aside, it's a really accurate description of the Fujifilm experience overall. I say that with love, but with every freaking shoot I'm having to say "technical difficulties" to the client and remove my battery to restart my camera like a n00b. Even beautiful celebrities and great leaders get farty.
