In this video I do a full field test and review of the newly announced FujiFilm GF55mm f/1.7 R WR lens with the also newly announced FujiFilm GFX100 II.
This lens has amazing bokeh thanks to its 1.7 f-stop and is a pleasure to use for portraits, action, and even street photography. I loved using the lens and wish I could go out and buy my own right this second!

I really liked your report. Thank you! I have never used a Fujifilm product, but this release is causing me to think hard about buying into the system. It has many areas of interest for what I'd like to use it for. Firstly, I want something that is well built, really solid. Considering that I am using the Hasselblad 503cx (film), with Carl Zeiss Hasselblad lenses, I want a similar "feel" to the build of this camera. Secondly, I want something that is "big" on imagine quality, but still shoots video. I want the camera to be my primary tool for both. It appears, from the press release, your review and the initial video from Gordon at Camera Labs, that it'll be able to deliver what I want from a system. I will go into my local store, to hold and play with one first, but since I have been holding out for a system like this, I'll start my orders with the GF55mm /f1. 7. I like that GF110mm tiltshift macro lens as well. But, first things first, the visit to my local shop, followed by the GF55mm

Thanks for the video. Just noticed, focal distance does not bring more or less Bokeh. It makes DoF more narrow from the same perspective. Bokeh is not an amount of blur and not the measure of DoF, it’s describes the beauty of rendering of out of the focus areas. So you can have beautiful Bokeh with some 200/5.6 and some ugly with 50/1.8 etc. So yeah nose Bokeh does not literally exist neither on f/0,95 nor on f/32 it’s just a nose in focus plane or out of it ))

I have the 80 1.7 and would love to buy the 55 1.7 BUT I found my 80 had a harder time picking up focus vs my 110 2.0 on my GFX100S. Did you find the DC motor in the 55 any better than the DC motor of the 80 in the ability to catch focus. Sometimes I would not even take my 80 to an event or wedding because of this draw back and I don't want to buy another expensive lens that has the same tendency... Thanks

All depends on what I was shooting. Portraits with the auto eye focus on, pretty sure I had like 100% capture rate with the 55 on the GFX100 II, worked great for video as well. Getting into some fast moving action where people are spinning all over the place? I noticed it struggled once or twice, but not sure if this was the fault of the lens or the AF settings I had on the camera. In general I was VERY happy with using the lens.

I think you said you also own the 80. Is it better than the 80 on AF or about the same Or maybe not enough time to evaluate. Thanks

@@philotimo5089 I don’t own the 80mm, but I did do a test shooting with one last year or so. I would have to do a side by side comparison to give you an honest answer. But during my current testing I had no issues with the speed of focus on the 55mm for street or portrait photography. For fast moving action I would like to test a little more. What do you shoot normally?

I have the hardest time with the 80 on my 100S esp shooting weddings because when you go from one subject to another it will somewhat freeze and I will miss shoots. In fact a few months ago I shot a wedding totally with my 110 2.0 because I was scared to use my 80. But I hope the 55 is better because it would be the best wedding lens because of the better field of view and a with the 1.7 there is no limit of what I can do if it just can catch focus better than my 80.

@@philotimo5089 rent it for a day and give it a try but I never had anything like that happen during my shooting with the 55. Good luck!!

thx for the visualization of your experience.... I would have preferred a more structured way of presentation;-). BUT: I also tested the 55 1.7 at my local store in Berlin - and compared to the 80 mm, which is in full frame about 62 mm - not so far away from 45 mm: but it produces a much more portrait-like rendering. And in most of you practical cases there was a bit more space behind you... the main argument for the 55 mm could be the faster AF, but if your are not doing sports for animals, for normal people the accuracy of focusing is more important. AND: the second issue - why not a fast 45 mm 1.7 - that would have been a real groundbreaking approach to journalistic photography... but now we habe 45 2.8, 50 3.5, 55 1.7, 63 2.8 , and 80 1.7 ???

Thanks for checking out the video and for the comment. This is about as structured as my brain gets, but I’ll keep your comment in mind for my next video. I really enjoyed the 55 focal length, and I think for anyone taking street portraits or any kind of portraits with movement the faster AF is a big help. I almost never work in studio so I know I would appreciate having it for my work.

Do you still see utility with the GF 50mm 3.5 alongside the new 55mm?
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography 11 месяцев назад
I’m sure it’s a great lens but the only advantages are price and size. The size isn’t a big issue, and if I was in the GFX system I would go with the 55 in a heart beat even though it’s twice the price.

How good or bad is it when you manual focus? (the experience and response of the focus ring)@@jasonhalaykophotography

@@ahmadshaarawy1224 ahh, I see. I unfortunately almost never shoot manual and one of the new features of the GFX100 II was its updated AF so I didn't do any testing with the manual focusing.

My friend, if we're talking about a 100MP camera, maybe we want to upload a 4k video.

Oh course. I thought the same thing and shot and edited my next video all in 4k and my current computer just couldn’t deal with the extra load. Was such a pain to edit, haha.
