I never hear GFX reviewers mention the aspect ratio of the sensors. And though one can approximate any ratio on any sensor, I so often find the in-built 4:3 frame, a compositional breath of fresh air-open, yet concise. That’s what keeps me coming back to the GFX, combined with the near limitless detail available in the colossal sized prints I love to create. Prints you can press your nose to, as they envelope your peripheral vision, and still no pixels in view. True presence to the moment. What a wonder.
@markg3124

I like that they other the photographer the option of a number of aspect ration options. If I get one I think I will most often be using 2:3 and 1:1 ratios.
@bluetsunami

I’ve never shot with this aspect ratio before and I’m finding it allows for cropping into different orientations. I often play with photos years after I’ve taken them and this aspect is truly wonderful.

The music for the GFX 100s Lightroom waiting time was fantastic, I actually hoped it would take a long time. Nice tune 😁...the differences between the two were interesting. I had seen the GFX 100s at one of the Fujifilm flagship stores in Istanbul (yes, Fujifilm has real stores, one of their own and one of many here in Turkey). When I saw the image quality at the store, I was smitten, to say the least. Being an XT 4 owner with a small lens collection already built up, the xf 16-80, xf70-300, xf50-140, xf23mmf2, xf18mmf1.4, and the xf50mmf1.0, I quickly became interested in the 100s. The best resolution I am able to attain is with the XT4 + the XF 50mmF1.0 pairing, both of which have produced good pictures, but nothing on the scale of what I had seen on the 100s. And to be honest, I enjoy the art of photography for myself, I don't publish my photos; the madness is simply for myself. But for me, there has been this personal obsession with the minute nitty gritty details. I would give the 100s some choice adjective to provide a new and alternate description DMD, id est: discrete microscopic detail.

My D850 is such a fantastic camera it's literally capable of everything. Including blocking all of my gear acquisition syndrome. Everytime I consider getting the 100s I just shoot the D850 twice and the GAS goes away.
@typhoon-7
@typhoon-7 6 месяцев назад
When you wrote this comment I had a D850. Loved it. I now have a GFX100S. Is it a better camera then the Nikon? No. It's just a different camera. The image quality and dynamic range are noticeably better (with broadly equivalent glass in front of each) but the Fuji is ponderously slow to use, the menus are infuriating, it's heavier, the AF is great for mountains and moving things at steady speed but the D850 blows it away for anything moving erratically or unexpectedly. So why did I swap? I do nature and landscape shots 99% of the time and the image quality... First time I went to lightroom and looked at edge to edge sharpness and ridiculous dynamic range.... made my GAS radar fire and I don't regret buying it. But the D850 is still probably a better all round camera than just about anything ever made. By anyone.

As ever, highly entertaining review of the not so big Fuji. You are spot-on in two respects others are just not quite picking up on. First, tilt EVF. We paid for it on the 50S. It was a consumer choice at vast expense. As you say, it came into its own with the walkabout capabilities of an image stabilised body. Only the need to give the original 100 some reason to continue to exist dictates the absence of at least a 3.6 m dot detachable evf. I have never made the transition to hand-held shooting using an LCD. Dinosaur that I am, the tilting evf is just a shooting joy on the 100. Second, the ability of this sensor to dispense with much stitching. One only needs to see an OOC 65:24 ratio jpeg blown up and printed large ( it is still using about 50MP) to realise that the creative possibilities without needing to spend stacks of time in post have jumped up with this camera.

Enjoy your video, particularly the introduction with the stills imaging and the background music. They want to bed when I was very impressed with because I only heard one other individual make the same statement. I believe you were talking about the focusing and maybe the speed of the GFX100 S. What impressed me was your comparison with other medium format camera and not with a full frame camera which you did not even mention, but with a medium format camera. I only heard one other reviewer make that statement. I’ll just call him the fat man for now. He said a lot of those who are doing reviews on Fuji medium format camera ,have no Knowledge of what a medium format camera is. It was the still images at the beginning of this video and the musical background that brought a smile to my face. Now isn’t that something?

Another camera to add to my when I win the lotto list. Mind you I upgraded from the 7100 to the Z5 in November last year and it has just blown me away with how good it is and with the 50 1.8 lens it is just FECKIN WOW. Hell I even bought a 7 artisans 35mm 0.95 manual lens, which is a bit weird as i am going blind but using a manual lens, and it is just such a dreamy lens. Might look into the 7 Artisan Leica lenses and see what they are like, bet they are way cheaper than a Leica lens

I love your videos. I watch your reviews of gear from brands I don’t use. Interesting, entertaining and thought provoking. Thank you to Claudia and you for your time and effort. The capability of this photography machine are jaw dropping. In the right hands an audacious instrument. I loved the images and music of your slide show. Great job. The big but.. I am in the 99% who do not want to pay for entry into this system. For me like Leica. I sort of appreciate the capability of this system, because of you and this video. It is much more than I need. In the right hands this machine could produce marvels. In my hands fish bait. I am content with APSC. Full frame offers me nothing I need and want. Same for a system that is bigger and heavier than full frame. I can watch this photography pornography all day long and not be tempted with GAS. I am a fan of using the right tool for the right job. As an amateur street photographer who will never be paid for creating an image, this is the wrong tool for the job at hand. Terrible analogy. Yesterday I used an Instax for three hours. I created horrible image. My face is sunburnt. Lesson to self. Don’t go out in the sun without a hat. Learned I don’t like this instrument. Despite the lens stating it was 60mm, it seemed much wider. Lack of control made me want to pull out the hair that has already taken a hike on my dome. I still had a grate time. I was the 1st to arrive at the event and Last to leave. Thanks Fujifilm and Glazers Camera. The point being put a camera in my hands and I’m happy. Even the wrong camera for me will illicit this response. I picked up a Panasonic S1 with the 50mm lens at a presentation and promptly put it down. Too heavy for me. Too heavy for me to play with in the store photographing a model. Too big. Too heavy. Too much camera for me. I fear the same can be true for the GFX100S. Review Canons, Nikons, Sony’s, Pentax, Ricoh (no GRIII review?), and Leica. I will watch your reviews. As you’ve said, these days the manufacturer’s don’t produce bad cameras. I will be entertained and informed by your ability to create lovely images. I will appreciate your analysis of the choices and compromises the manufacturers have made. I will not be tempted to leave the APSC worlds of Fujiland or Martyland. Please continue your reviews and share your thoughts. The only thing that makes me said is I can consume your content faster than you can create it. Completely off subject. Will soon be 70. Miss Brooklyn. Seattle is not even close to being NYC like. I return to NYC the middle of September to walk the streets. Not this year. Not enough people on the streets yet. I love being there and wish I could live there. I appreciate the better weather here. I love and support my NPR jazz & blues station here. I love that people are vaccinated and wear masks here. It is great we have two good camera stores here. I drive past one six days a week while going to work. The other store is a 20’ ride to the city. The photo opps are limited here. I’m here and appreciate what I have. I don’t live in a tent on the street or in my car on the street like so many. I can still purchase camera bodies without my wallet crying. Life is good. Maybe we will walk the streets of the old country some day. I’d like that. Mask on Nurse Marty

I decided to hop skip and jump aps-c, m43 and aps c because when it comes to lens accessories the price is not that much of a difference. Rather than have a crop factor I want to concentrate on 35mm equivalent. Given the money I would be interested in the medium format for long exposures which are not obtainable with other sensor sizes. I would love to invest in leica however not their cl, tl or q range. Fuji gfx 50s ii. In an ideal world. Also considered what printer would be the best to take advantage of these images.. A bit of research today found me £1000 ish 10 cartridge systems. So that would be only a buying option if I intended to sell prints. Anyway your videos are always informative and very unbiased.

Professional commercial, architecture (though they need a wide zoom in the 18-20mm-35-40mm range) reproduction, and mid to high end fine art photography where you sell limited edition prints in galleries are the markets the GFX 100 and 100S are mainly aimed at. Not street/family/wedding/portrait/pet/sports/events/wildlife/amateurs/happy snappers, ect. I think Fuji's hope is that photographers will consider a GFX 100s system instead of the high MP FF for the work described above. For anything you dont' need longer than 300mm or super fast AF or AF tracking for or anything in a studio (all of which the majority of commercial work fits nicely in), a GFX 100/100S is the better choice due the larger sensor, better bit depth, and higher mp which adds a huge amount of versatility. And at $6K a 100S is basically the same price as flagship pro DSLRs and less than an A1. The lenses aren't really that much more either in the grand scheme of things given there superior optical performance. So a large number of pro photographers in the middle to upper end of the commercial market can afford to run a GFX 100S kit. Many can afford a GFX 100 too. Anyone who would be on a Phase One or Hasselblad MF system but for price and/or the terrible AF and handling will be very interested in a GFX 100 or 100S based system. As will be many who bought a 5DS/D850 instead of the 1DX/D6 type body due to the resolution not the price.

I tested the cam in my studio(as I mentioned earlier) for portraits. The camera works really well in the studio with the tilting screen. What I am missing in your review is the dimensions of the sensor. I don’t like the 3:2 dimensions for portraits. I crop all most every picture square like my old Hasselblad(I really mis that format and quality ) of just leave it in 3:4. This where the camera for me stands out. The image quality superb. What I really hope that fuji would change in the camera: if you change it to 1:1 you can’t shoot raw. I wish and hope that they find a way to have a raw reading of the sensor in 1:1. Saves a lot of cropping and disk space and so time and money in post. Thx for the review again! Keep up the good work!

Hugh, thanks so much for this! Another great video, and on what appears to be a great camera. As a caveat, I do not own a 100S, but from studying quite a few of the full res RAWs you can download from various photographers, it also seems to me that there is an aspect to its image quality that actually under-appreciated in the reviews (if that’s even possible on such a hyped camera). The IQ aspect is this: the absolutely gorgeous and realistic color reproduction and tonal range. To me, the representation of subtle tonal transitions in both light and dark areas of many photos is just jaw dropping. No exaggeration. So, one area where I disagree with most reviewers is on the statements that 100MP is “only” getting us a bunch of detail that most people don’t need. To my eye, those 100MP also seem to be giving us color, tonal subtly and dynamic range that is at least close to the best you can get anywhere. Would you agree? Or, am I off-base here? Thanks again. Keeping pumping these puppies out. All the best, John W

Hugh, Agreed. You absolutely did say that. Most of my comment was in reference to the ‘great masses of reviews’ out there. However, and this is just a matter of personal taste in image quality, you mostly just made those comments in passing and also made statements to the effect of something like “do you really need all that detail”. I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just saying that for my taste in images, those subtle tonal gradations are worth as much or more than the detail. Anyway, I am a member of the great masses of folks out there who won’t get one of these - but ONLY because as an amateur ‘hack’ photographer, I can’t justify dropping $10K on a camera (I’m including a little glass in that number.). Hold that thought! :-)

Nice and comprehensive video, Hugh, and loved the shots from PA. Just to add some additional context and counterpoint: 1) I see the GFX100S as clearly the most compelling value proposition in the MF segment that is the "other half" of Fujifilm's Blue Ocean strategy, given they've become the predominant market incumbent in their first blue ocean, the mirrorless APS-C segment. So, they've executed on those two strategic goals very effectively. 2) Lots of folks make comparisons to the market offerings in the red ocean of high-res FF market segment, but honestly, I don't see those FF customers as potential customer for Fuji's MF offerings. The main reason being that those FF owners have already bought into their respective lens systems, and as Thom Hogan accurately says, _"...the bodies come and go, but the lenses stay."_ Rather, I see the Fuji MF as compelling for hard-core professional *commercial* photographers who really need what MF can really give them. Not just resolution, but superb control over a broader and finer range of tonality as well as finer control over a range of DOF. As Ming Thein says, "that Medium Format look". Photographers e.g.. Wayne Johns, Karl Taylor, Damien Lovegrove, Kevin Mullins, or Thomas Heaton. Movie production, high-end composite or "art" photographers, e.g., Renee Robyn or Steve Richard. Industry fashion or product photographers whose shots of fashion garments or luxury items are going be displayed 6 feet tall in the Duty Free areas of international airports, or, architects that need MF not only for their clients, but also...to enter their work into *Architectural Design Competitions.* Those guys need everything MF can give them. So, I see Product and Architectural photographers like Rob Grimm, Jeff Totaro, or Tony Roslund as potential customers, also. Cheers!

Fuji really need to step up in the AF tracking system across their entire system. And by the way, this is just "cropped version" of medium format rather than the tradition size of Medium Format.

Keith, curious what decision you have made? If the goal is high quality landscapes, I would lean toward going to the Fujifilm 100s with the lenses that work for you. My experience on the whole is that history repeats itself. Given all other thing basically created equal, the bigger format brings great quality. I presently considering getting a the 100s, and went to a store that had 3 prints from the previous 100mp Fuji camera. The print were about 4 by 6 feet in size and were stunning. My thinking is get one lens that is a focal length I like to work with, the Fujifilm 45mm (36mm equivalent in full frame) and the 100s and use it to create some of my work.

I was thinking about getting the Fuji GFX 100S, but when I found out that the EVF did not have a goo enough resolution for my use, I hold back, that was very good I did, I saved a lot of cash, so now I have Sony A7RIV, Sony A7RIVA which are good enough in resolution for most of my work, if I need more resolution I can rent a 150 megapixels Phase One on those rare occasions. The are so many very good to excellent Lenses for the Sony E-mount system, I have some, fx Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, Sony 135mm 1.8 GM and Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G, you just do not have so much good Lenses for the Fuji, The Sony are more compact and lighter, so it is a joy walking around both on short strolls and on very long hikes. Hasselblad/DJI have stalled too much, Hasselblad/DJI should have answered Fuji with a X2D with 100+ megapixels Camera, now it can be too late, I am very sad to see what is happening to Hasselblad Cameras, I have had Haselblad film Cameras for many years and I arranged visits to the old factory in Göteborg, Sweden for enthusiasts Photographers as well as professional Photographers for many years when there still was a soul/spirit in the factory of Victor Hasselblad.

It takes many years to figure out what camera(s) and what lenses suits one's eye and requirements. The GFX100 series I use only for Street |Urban and landscape shooting. ALl the rest is better handled by the Leica S. The reason for the GFX in Street is the cropability factor- matched to a 23 or a 45 lens in crowded situaitons - you end up with multiple images of interest - stuff you never saw whilst actually shooting what you were seeing .... As for display - try the images on an 8K 75inch QLED - I'm almosyt over printing now that sxcreen resolution and coplour range is where it is with screens. interersted in yoru view on this. atbPete

But I can always hire middle-aged models for urban landscape images, provided we can somehow avoid unfortunate run-ins with ill-intentioned street folks. As for digital, Sony promises to release three new cameras this year (so I have read).
