Fujifilm held another Fujikina event, this time in Australia, to announce four new products: the X-T50, the GFX100S II, XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR lens, and the GF 500mm f/5.6 R LM OIS WR. Two of these announcements, the lenses, were expected: Fujifilm is one of the few companies that publishes lens roadmaps well ahead of official product announcements. But the two cameras were less so, especially considering the GFX 100 II was announced so recently, seeing the GFX100S II may have come as somewhat of a surprise. The X-T50 is also a bit unexpected and it brings a new dial to the party that is just for film simulations.
There is a lot to discuss, and that's not even touching on the new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art II, which was also announced this week. It's a packed episode you won't want to miss!

That list of Fujifilm cameras is not what they are actually still selling. They are only selling eleven models: X-T30 II X-S20 X-T50 X-T5 X-H2 X-H2S X100VI GFX 50S II GFX 100S GFX 100S II GFX 100 II And I imagine the X-Processor 4 equipped models, so the X-T30 II, GFX 50S II, and GFX 100S, are just clearing existing inventory, rather than still being in production, so won't be around for too much longer.

It's probably going to be true for the two GFX models, but the X-T30 II was confirmed to remain in production as an entry-level model, presumably until an X-E5 comes around. It surprised me as well...

As a classical artist of 25 years and now a photographer for the last 15 years, this is my observation: In the arts, it’s usually the least talented artists that stir the jealousy and conflict with other artists. Photography is no different. You have a lot of people who know that they suck at photography who find it easier to just bitch and moan at those that are good at photography.
@jlwilliams
@jlwilliams 21 день назад
Generalizations are always true except when they aren't. I can think of a lot of talented artists in various fields who were/are incredibly abrasive about other artists, as well as people who have succeeded primarily through luck, connections, marketing ability etc. who realize they aren't tremendously talented and are genuinely appreciative of peers who are. People who care a lot about anything are likely to be strongly opinionated about it; how they express those opinions is more a matter of personality than ability. Of course it's terribly appealing to be able to say, "That guy is just dissing me because I'm good and he isn't" so your viewpoint is bound to be more popular than mine!
@nazukeoya
@nazukeoya 19 дней назад
@@jlwilliams Generalizations are by nature not “always true”, they are general statements that are true most of the time or they are meaningful pattern in a group. If you dismiss the validity of generalizations, then you have to dismiss the validity of statistics. In short, generalizations are very valid statements to make, and to dismiss them is to dismiss reality.

Would love to know what the non-fast version of the IMX461 in the gfx100s is called. Sony have only ever listed (since 2016) the version that allows drop to 12 bit for 10 fps readout. Likewise black point clipping and pull 80 has always been possible in post and they're now just doing it in camera and for some reason claiming it's due to a new sensor?

Fujifilm old-school cameras are so cool. I saw one recently and I was SOOOOO jealous. Now I get it it's not a "pro" camera but it has something that other cameras do not have which is satisfying textures and feel.
@Lunker_Dunker
@Lunker_Dunker 21 день назад
Maybe I'm biased because I use an X-T5, but I don't really see a reason they can't be a "pro" camera. APSC has advantages in quite a few scenarios, and these are arguably the best APSC cameras you can buy. People also use them for professional work all the time, just not necessarily sports or journalism.
@answeris4217
@answeris4217 21 день назад
@@Lunker_Dunker Sure you could use it for professional use... I bet that somebody that has a I phone 15 pro will tell you that pros use it too. Reality is that if you are shooting a movie you will likely use a RED camera with a global shutter over an iPhone. But I bet there's tons of people making money on RU-vid using their iPhone. Doesn't make the iPhone a cinema camera. I would also argue that all the major camera companies have great APSC cameras. Doesn't mean that most still reach for the full frame for professional work. As for who has the best APSC camera... That's a completely different arguent. I doubt that any non Fuji user would ever choose Fuji. I would bet that most would choose the R7 or the Sony A6700 or something along those lines.
@Lunker_Dunker
@Lunker_Dunker 20 дней назад
@@answeris4217 I did say "arguably the best," and both of those are very good arguments as well lol. I've shot both Nikon and Canon in the past and loved both. I think for video, you're probably right that most pros wouldn't think Fuji, even though they do take very good video. They're just overlooked compared to other options. However, I'm in a lot of Fuji groups on social media, and I see professional portraits and wedding photography in there all the time, and they look fantastic. So for stills it's definitely AN option that some people take. One of Fuji's selling points that doesn't get enough attention is how powerful their "film simulation" system is. Quite frankly, they market it wrong. Sure it works if you want to get a specific old film look on your photos, but what it really is, is a very powerful in-camera RAW processing system, that can be tweaked exactly how you want before you ever take a photo. I still shoot in RAW+jpg out of habit, but it's rare that I ever need to edit the RAW files anymore because the jpgs come out looking amazing already. Just imagine how much easier a pro's workflow would be if they didn't have to edit every photo after the fact...

With regard to toxicity of comments, yes it’s a big problem and leads me to think that there just isn’t a photo community. I always wondered if this was the reason that Trey Ratcliff always stated that he was aiming his work outside of photographers. It’s difficult to assign a reason to it but emotional fragility of creators is a big one. One of the rumours sites in particular has a problem with it.

It was funny that you covered instax then mentioned how the Leica should do very well from their Sofort cameras. But in a recent interview the CEO of Leica stated that Fujifilm makes the Sofort for Leica. Not just the tech on licence, they outright pay Fuji to make them. Amd then they print on instax paper. I see more of a win here for Fuji than Leica!
@TristanColgate
@TristanColgate 19 дней назад
It still blows my mind that the photography community likes to dismiss instax as a gimmick, when, in reality, it's still a *massive* portion of the overall global (non-mobile) camera sales. Would Fuji be in the digital position it is if it didn't have the money/cushion that instax brings them? If the *photography* industry wants to seriously look at why camera sales tanked, maybe they need to have a think about what keeps instax so popular, maybe the word "fun" might be relevant?

If you're going to dissect the Fujifilm range on a future episode, could you also include the lens range for X mount. While the company has made strides with the cameras, it feels as though the lens range is a little tired, particularly when you consider the introduction of the 40MP sensor. Hoping for fast telephoto primes is a bit of a longshot given likely demand and R&D budgets, but a decent set of zooms shouldn't be too much to ask. There's no equivalent of a 16-35mm F2.8 (the 10-24mm is F4 and not the best optically), while a properly sharp replacement for the 16-80mm would be a real winner. Given the advances in lens design from the big three and Sigma, Fujifilm seems to be falling behind the sompetition here.

41:45 : I don't know if Jordan is talking about the 24MP Bayer chip that was in the X-A series and X-T200, or if he's talkinga bout teh older X-Trans III sensor, but I would want to add some correction to this : the X-Trans III is actually just as fast as the X-Trans IV when it comes to speed and accuracy, providing that you're setting the AF-C modes properly. I've been using an X-T2 for 3 years paired with an X-H1 for about 2 years, and really those camera don't lack speed when it omces to autofocus. What they lack is subject detection features, and phase detection points all across the frame, as they all concentrated in the middle. In a lot of ways, the X-2 shoots a lot loke a DSLR camera, in the way that you have to do your tracking yourself, use the "3D tracking wanab" mode, or zone focusing or straight up single point focus and do the tracking yourself, and you have to be careful about the focus points that you're actually using, not to step in the contrast detection points because the camera WILL loose the subject there 9 times out of 10. But otherwise those olde Fujis are tremendos when it comes to AF speed and accuracy, they get quite a bad rep, I guess because all the buss has been around face / eye and various subject detection features in the last few years, but I have been shooting sports and wildlife with my X-T2 and never really had any issues with th autofocus at all, of felt it was too slow. The X-T1 was too slow, the X-T2 clearly wasn't (especially after all the firmware updates it got)

I took it that the reference was to the X-A and X-Txxx series, because those lines appear to be discontinued. (Though I got an impression that the X-A series sold Ok in Asia. They only need to tweak the X-A line a little bit to make make it more worthwhile.)

At 53:53, Jordan makes a comment about getting "a slightly different aesthetic from using a longer focal length as opposed to a crop." Unfortunately, this is a myth. Decades ago, Modern Photography Magazine had an article on this subject, well illustrated with photographs showing that photographs taken by successively longer focal length lenses were indistinguishable from the cropped photos (with the same resulting field of view) taken with shorter focal lengths. In a series of shots (that ran from 20mm to 500mm (or thereabouts), they showed that longer focal length photos were "nested" inside every photo taken with shorter focal length lenses., with a shot taken at 20mm having the 500mm shot nested within it, including the 500mm's "perspective effects." What we think of as "telephoto effect" is merely an effect of POV and distance to the subjects (it literally depends on perspective, not the qualities of the lens). The effect is inside shorter focal length shots, but you just don't notice it because the frame isn't filled with the effect. You can test this yourself by photographing a cityscape from across a river, and, without changing POV, zooming in more and more after each photo. (I suggest starting with the longest shot of buildings that illustrate the "telephoto" effect, to make sue it ends up nested inside the other photos.) You will find that a version of the longest focal length shot is inside every shot taken with shorter focal lengths (i.e., those latter photos can be cropped to yield perspective exactly the same as that taken with a longer focal length lens. It's actually easier to see the effect than it is to describe it! It's also difficult to get your head around it, because we've been immersed in myths about lenses and their effects. Maybe you guys should take a super zoom out somewhere and do the test yourselves. It would be very educational.

You guys really crack me up. You talk about the best menu systems, and you don't even mention your sponsor om system Which, in my opinion, has an amazing new menu system that is better than almost every. Thing you mentioned and I also shoot panasonic. In fact, it really cracks me up that you never, ever give it anything T your sponsor beyond the 30 seconds at the beginning of the show. You never bring them up. You never recommend them. You never mention them it's hysterical. It tells me that no one at O. M systems watches your podcast, so I guess you know they deserve it in some way

"There's no such thing as a free lunch" is an economics term? That explains it then, most economists make the field of economics look useless. I've had free lunches, really, with no strings attached. I haven't even known why or who.
@JPC009
@JPC009 21 день назад
It actually originates in how American Bars offered a free lunch in order to entice customers to come and drink. Many customers would naturally buy a drink, and often the drinks would be required (see every coupon that says ‘free with purchase of x’).

Guys, Fuji IMHO makes a range of cameras that meet the tastes and needs of a variety of users. They differentiate from the likes of Canon / Nikon / Sony by providing two ranges that bracket their products. For most users they can compete with their APSC cameras and overshoot the FF big MP with the GFX line up. Frankly for pros if you can't earn a living from either system except at the extremes then? As an aside the photographer who took the first official photographs of King Charles and Queen Camilla uses Fuji GFX. How posh is that.

It's not wednesday. lol. More sponsors? Congrats! I must correct you on the economics term of "No Free Lunch" There are a few we use, and don't pay for in any way. Gravity. You can't buy more. You can't buy less. On earth there is gravity, without specific crazy transportation people do not actually want to use, gravity is free. Orbit. The orbit of the earth is free. We get a habitable zone. Orbit is free. Time, now theres a million gimmicks to save you time in your day, but can you actually physically buy or sell time? No. Time for each person is finite and nothing and no one can give you any more than what you are destined to have. Time is time. Speedboosters however, they completely ruin chris's statement. Heres more light and photons and DOF on a smaller camera! lol
@niccollsvideo
@niccollsvideo 21 день назад
Speed boosters are great for video work but now you have more glass for the light to go through with some loss of image quality and internal reflections. They are an excellent tool but I stand by my statement.

A couple years ago I was shooting an automotive event as a hobbyist, among quite a few people selling photographs of the event. I was just there to work on my skills. I asked some Nikon boomer about how one would get into selling prints from a business perspective and he behaved like I asked him if he touched children inappropriately or enjoyed tap dancing in baskets of kittens. Like bro, relax. I'm not here to eat your breakfast I was just curious about finding my own breakfast somewhere else. I'll never go so far as to call anything toxic. It's a silly and overprescribed term that seems to mean "people are meanies". But I would definitely say there are a lot of guarded and paranoid people who think sharing knowledge is somehow career ending to the person who shared the knowledge.

Fuji will be better if they focus they wor on auto focus, firmware v6 its absolute garbage i want to cry and sell all my gear now. Xt50 will be ice if they put some weather proofing and ged rid of the old battery. Looks like Fuji ha r Identity problem.

I am boycotting Fuji until they can make some sense of their naming scheme.... X100T, F, V and then suddenly 6?? Fuji XT-30.... where the hell is the XT-40?? Still nice cameras though and the Fuji lenses are great! The X70 and X-Pro1 are still my favorite digital cameras that are not called Pentax 645

XT-50 shares the same internals as the XT-5 so it makes sense to name it adjacent to its "bigger brother". Also, who cares what the model numbers are? Boycott them over REAL issues like their firmware v6 AF fiasco...
21 день назад
Actually, the X100 is the first one, X100S stands for Second, X100T stands for Third, X100F stands for Fourth and then they switched to Roman numbers. X100V for Fifth and X100VI for Sixth gen cameras.

That’s not how evolution works… an individual does not itself evolve through its lifetime, a population evolves over generations. Unfortunately in a world where religious fundamentalists deny science and get their denials put into school curriculums, we must challenge the scientific illiterate even if they are merely making a vegan shitpost.
