For an experienced photographer/videographer - PASM is probably not a big deal. As a newbie, I went from a Canon 7D to my Fuji X-T2 so I could focus on the Exposure triangle/square without having to hut my head against the wall trying to learn the menus at the same time. As a tactile-kinesthetic learner, the Fuji X-T dials are a godsend.
@luxdalet
@luxdalet Год назад
Agreed! Even if you want to use the custom modes, you can assign the custom mode switching the Q Menu, and all of their custom names are displayed.

The benefits of the PASM dial are the C settings rather than the dial itself IMO. Once a photographer gets their head around the exposure triangle it doesn't really matter how that is controlled. Being able to switch instantly between a bunch of preset modes (kids, studio, sports, indoor venue, outdoor venue etc.) is extremely beneficial.
@rodneytopor1846

I agree with this comment. Moreover, the absence of physical dials (X-H and X-S models) allows (or should allow, I don't actually have such a camera) elements of the exposure triangle, exposure compensation, drive modes, focus modes, and more to be included in custom setting packages, whereas they cannot be included in custom setting packages in cameras with physical dials and levers (X-T models).
@iShaymus
@iShaymus Год назад
@@rodneytopor1846 the XT series of camera have a movie silent mode which allows all of the settings to be set from the screen regardless of what the physical dials are set to. So it is possible, they just don’t want to.

I bought the H2 two days ago for several reasons not the least of which in the 40MP and better auto focus. I gave my XT3 to my adult daughter that enjoys photography and I'm planning to sell my XT4. I know it may sound like anathema to many but the PASM dial seems to make sense to me and while I know there is a learning curve to the new system. I think that most of if not all of the changes I was able to make with the triangle of dials on the XT4 can be made quickly with the wheels and function buttons on the H2. Of course all of this is made easier because I have you as my online mentor. You are more than worth the few $$ for your monthly subscription -- a laborer is worthy his hire.

Honestly it’s not so much the PSAM slots as much as it’s the C1-C7 that I would be using in this case. This is something I’ve long since been trying to find a good way to do on my X-T3 (in vain, kinda), to be able to change any and all settings on my camera with just one flick of a dial. Going for a studio shoot? That’s C1, that means exposure preview off, white balance set to a specific kelvin, etc, no need to go into any menus as all. During the shoot I want to take a break and shoot B-roll? Just switch to another Custom mode and I’m set without having to worry about messing up my settings when it’s time to get back to shooting pictures. I think that’s incredibly powerful, and the reason why a manual focus mode switch makes no sense on the X-H2(s). It’s a totally different paradigm in how to set up the camera which honestly can’t be done on older X-T models.

Another great video, and will be especially useful for those new to PASM dials. Even as somebody that has shot with PASM cameras for ages, I knew I'd learn something by watching this (the red dot indicating changes have not been saved). I'm really glad you mentioned disabling 'auto update changes'. IMO that should be disabled as standard. When I hired an X-H2 before committing to one, I got caught out by that and missed a load of shots at event I was shooting as my shutter speed got auto-saved when I'd slowed it down for one particular shot, and then I forgot. Now, with it disabled, I can adjust settings for a particular shot, and then know I can quickly flick from one custom mode to another and back again and it resets me to what I'm expecting!

FWIW, I decided to reprogram the movie record button to instead toggle exposure compensation on/off (the "M>+/-" option). For me, that means (a) I don't accidentally start recording video, and (b) I can then use a dial for exposure compensation when in full Manual mode but using auto-ISO (which I like to do for bird photography). Hope that might be useful to anyone else new to the X-H2(S) world. 🙂

X-S10! Finally, a Fuji camera for the rest of us! Not overly complicated and skipping the retro manual dials for those of us more used to other cameras like Sony. I guess having all those customizable buttons and knobs is okay if you only shoot with one camera or only similar Fuji cameras, but if you have other cameras and once in a while pick up the Fuji it is sure easy to forget where the heck you buried that one setting that you are looking for! I love the PASM.

As a former Canon user, I really love dedicated dials on X-T3. But also miss C modes on Canon. I use my X-T3 for general photography and bird photography. When photographing birds, I switch some settings for flying and not flying ones. To do this I need to change focus mode, focus point/zone and drive mode settings quickly. But I can't do it on X-T3 fast enough. Dedicated dials + Custom mode switches would be better for my taste :)

You have more C modes on a X-T3 as on every Canon camera. I have to look what the actual number is, but it must be 9 or even more. You can program for anything you want and save the settings and even rename your C‘s.

X-T3 has 7 custom settings. But we cannot assign focus or drive mode setting there as I remember. We can add af mode to Q menu, but we need to change it individually. So we are not able to arrange like, C1 has point af + continuous low drive, C2 has zone focus + continuous high etc.

Great video as expected, Chris. I appear to be an outlier here, but I don’t think the PASM dial vs. control knobs controversy is that big a deal. I use both an X-S10 and an X-T4 and I don’t find it difficult to go from one to the other. Both control systems have their strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes I think it makes sense, then sometimes I think 🤔 why would any camera need the extra step of such a dial? Either way, it's there, so we need to embrace it if we want to use certain Fuji cameras now.

Instead of having filters on the selection dial, Fuji could have had a PASMF set up, where F operated like a traditional Fuji set up to operate with front and rear dials. Clickable front and rear dials would have made that work better naturally. Then users moving between bodies could have familiar set up and maintain the Fuji approach to selection of aperture, shutter priority etc. A mid way measure that could better serve some of their users, and help muscle memory for those moving between different bodies. Think filters could happily be slightly less accessible. :)

As a student in the 70's I learned photography using dedicated dials on the Olympus OM system. Then wth digital cameras I was using Nikons with PASM dials as a photojournalist. Then when Fujifilm brought back to us dedicated dials I jumped to them straight away and love it. I have tried the Fuji X-S10 but it was a joyless experience, so got rid of it. I've just bought a 2nd hand GFX 50R as it has dials and looks like Fujifilm have now swapped to PASM on their new medium formats. There's no right or wrong, just go with what suits you, and Fujifilm are the only brand out there giving users a choice.

True, but for how long? 🫲🙄🫱 The X-T line is last line with manual dials, the X-T00 double digit no longer exists replaced by the X-S line with pasm, and the X-T000 triple digit has not gotten a new camera in ages. I mean with got the X-T30II, but it was definitely an odd ball. 🤔
@GregCarrick

@@williamaungleyraud With the X-T5 the line seems to be safe for a few years yet. The X100 and X-Pro's are keeping the dials as well. Despite the nice Fujifilm colour science and film sims, if they were all PASM dials there would be nothing attracting me to them.

I loved the dedicated dials on the X-T1, X-T2, and now on my X-T3. I remember the PASM dial from my Canon days. Hope the X series keeps the dedicated dials.

I am taking photos for over 40 Years now and my camera needs exactly two dials. The on/off switch and a dial where I can choose between A and M. That`s it !! Therefore I like my X-H 2, where the dial can also be blocked. Believe it or not: I have disabled all other buttons and dials where possible.

Thank you! I had somehow managed to set my C1 before seeing this but have been getting confused on how to do it so this is very helpful. I also set my WB button to recall C1 which is a very useful way to quickly recall a much-used setting. If anyone's unsure how to do this: under the spanner menu, button/dial setting, function setting, pick your button and choose c1 for the selection. I do have a question re custom buttons - is there any way to program a button on the right side of the camera to bring up the drive mode menu? With a big lens it is awkward to reach over to the default button to do this. Thanks!

Amazing that computers have turned something as simple as the exposure triangle into a process so complicated that you effectively need a flow chart to resolve how the device is going to act. No PASM for me, thanks. I'm intellegent enough to do it on my own and it is more intuative and direct. It does require a bit more active interaction on my part, but that's part of why I do photography anyway. I'm perfectly happy at times to put my camea into P mode (or A or S), but I prefer to run all things manually most of the time so I can be deliberate in what I am actually having the camera do. That said, I really enjoy your videos and I'm sure many people learn a lot through them, as I do.

Are you intelligent enough to change let say 10 parameters in the same time? I not able to do this 😂 I advise people to take time studying the power of custom modes.
@mjmdiver1137

@@gilleslast3561 There's only three... You know, the exposure TRIANGLE. In fact, there's only two if you fix your ISO for circumstances when the shooting conditions aren't changing much.

100% ok with you about the triangle we all know. I was referring to all the other parameters of the camera like AF Mode, Focus mode, Drive mode, Metering and so on….

@@gilleslast3561 Yes I know... Hahaha. I was just being a jerk a bit. I think this is part of why film cameras are coming back into favor... Some/many of them were very simple and straightforward and had none of that to be concerned about.

Great walk-thru, as always! I think a (quick) comparison between this version of the custom "C" setting and the ones in the Q-menu on other Fujis would be interesting. Before switching to Fujifilm two years ago, I had been shooting Canon EOS since 1988, first analog, later digital. The way they worked with the PASM-dial was very intuitive. Still, it was the dedicated dials on the Fuji that re-ignited my love for photography. So I’m on the fence… (Actually, there was briefly a Sony between the Canons and the Fujis. Again PASM-based, but completely unintuitive. I didn’t like it at all.)

I've gone back and forth between PASM on Canon and Sony, and the retro dials on Fuji, but honestly I think the manual dials are where it's at for me. Having to mindlessly scroll through a bunch of shutter speeds to get to the one you want, then just missing it by a bit so you have to scroll back up, not before setting your camera to the right mode of course! It's so much simpler to chill in aperture prio with the classic Fuji dials, then when you NEED a specific shutter I can just look down, set it real quick, and bam, I'm in full control over my aperture on the lens AND shutter on the camera - all without changing modes and without fumbling! Want your ISO to be locked for a sec, turn the knob! It's so intuitive that I can't help but feel a little sad to see cameras I would love to buy getting shafted into the 'cool, but not for me' category because of the shift up. Fujifilm was the one camera brand giving users a choice on the matter in the sea of PASM cameras and it was their one stand-out feature. PASM takes the joy out of photography for me, just a tad haha 😭

To be honest, throughout my photography journey since 2015, I've never gone out of Full Manual and now anything else seems like learning curve i don't want to get into unless absolutely necessary. (This isn't a flex, I'm just a bit lazy to invest the time.)

Great and informative video. A couple notes: 1) For the most part, I think "auto update custom settings" should be ENABLED other than when you're setting up the camera for the first time. When disabled, the camera will not remember a change in your exposure setting after the camera is turned off which can be annoying depending on how you're using the custom settings. If you're like me, you turn the camera off frequently to save battery life. So for example, let's say I have a custom setting for shooting wildlife in Manual exposure mode and I frequently change my shutter speed / aperture based on the subject and lighting. I want the camera to remember the fact that I changed shutter speed to 1/500s to 1/2000s (after turning the camera off), while still maintaining the other settings specific to shooting wildlife. However, I will say that some might use their custom settings differently and may want/need unchanging exposure settings. 2) You cannot use exposure compensation in Manual exposure mode UNLESS you assign a function button to exposure compensation override. I have the Fn button on the top-right-rear of the camera assigned to exposure compensation override, since I mostly use Manual exposure mode with auto ISO.

I use X-H1's for my business, and I just got the new H2 and tested it today. I must admit I will have to work with it for a while because for me it isn't as intuitive as my H1 with its analog dials. I feel like I'm back with Canon again. Right now I wish they had stuck with the H-1 layout. I'll probably have to sell my H1's so I don't get confused when it counts.

I would suggest that you start assigning Stills with Custom-1 and count up, Moves start with 7 and move down. That way you keep the two types grouped.

Excellent video Chris, I will try the settings for C1 to C7 now. Also, have you noticed that the automatic selection for mechanical and electronic shutter doesn’t work with firmware 1.01 on XH2 40mp, on my old trusted XT3 whilst using f1 on the 50mm lens outside in sunlight it switched to electronic shutter when shutter speeds exceeded the mechanical shutter, this doesn’t work on the XH2 and remains in mechanical hence over exposure of images.

I actually prefer PASM as I can see all changes via the EVF. This is after 15 years with Nikon's DSLRs and then coming to an X-pro3. The only annoying part of PASM (to me) was the dial assignment would change according to whether in A or S, so it never became muscle memory on my Nikon DSLR, nor could I lock assignment. If I can lock each dial to a certain function independent of mode, I'd be happy to go for an X-H2.
