Fujifilm's Corrected AF Frame - How it Works and Why

What is the Corrected AF Frame you see in Fujifilm menus, and how does it work? This is an important concept to understand using the OVF in cameras like the X100 and X-Pro series.
We'll go through it here with some easy-to-understand diagrams (which are not to scale but you get the point!).
It all starts with understanding parallax, a phenomenon that occurs in cameras with optical viewfinders.

FINALLY!!! Someone explained the Fuji ovf system...

That’s a lovely clear explanation. There are so many ‘boxes’ appearing in my OVF and the manual doesn’t even mention them!

This is the clearest explanation on the 3 focus boxes in the optical viewfinder on my Fuji Xpro2 that I’ve seen. I’ve owned this camera for a few years but have always been confused by this. It’s not my everyday camera so I don’t use it often and when I do take it out I’m confused by it all over again. This video helps so much that it may become my daily camera now! Thank you!

I still get confused by it if I haven’t worked with it in a while 😂

This is a great video for me specially that I am planning to buy the X100V. However, this is still confusing to me. I appreciate a follow up video with live examples at the field. Thanks in advance

I'll see what I can do! Accurately filming through the OVF is a challenge but I may be able to simulate it.

I have seen some people got to keep the "green focused" spot stay where it is in the "first white frame" even after shifting to the "second corrected white frame". Instead of guess where the actual focus place. Do you know anything about that? Is that only apply to certain models only? Because my XPro2 doesn't have it, and that makes the "single point focus" with non-human subjects in closer distance almost unusable...

Nisi filter right? I have it in silver, and it's fantastic.

Good to know! So is the 1.6" mark the same for any Fujifilm lens you are using?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 3 года назад
It's actually dependent on the camera. It's about 2.6' for the X-Pro1 and 1.6' for the X-Pro2 & 3. It's more about the OVF characteristics and not about lens minimum focusing distance.

Hi gang, is there a way to fix the framelines in the ovf? Just bought my first fuji camera, and my 23mm lens' framelines shift whenever i rack focus manually. Can you affix them?
@ericthestone
@ericthestone 3 года назад
How do you find the frameline accuracy? Is it usually wider than actual image?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 3 года назад
Yeah, I've found the actual captured frame to be just slightly wider than the "bright frame" framing guide. I guess it's better to err on the wider side and crop later than to not have captured a part of the frame you thought you captured ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

glad i didnt sell my xt5 for xpro3 for this. I actually use x100 and x100f then but most of the time only use EvF or ovf but with f8. See how this actually works is really confusing user and not practical to use the ovf. If i want ofv experience i'll save for Leica M, at least the parallax is consistent

Yeah it’s kinda goofy.

Off the subject of this great illustration, how to override the custom simulation or disable them and shoot with normal installed simulations in x100v, thanks.
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 3 года назад
There's no way to "reset" just the image quality settings back to the defaults without resetting the camera. So I would suggest creating a Custom Setting (like Custom 7) that is programmed to the Provia film simulation and all of the other settings at 0.

This assumes single point autofocus. Can you use the other AF modes with the optical viewfinder? If so how does it work?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 2 года назад
Hi Doug, the examples in the video show Single Point but Zone also works the exact same way. You'll see the two focus squares for the Zone AF Mode (it just won't be dashed since it's already dashed, but will be in the same relative position and correspond to the same distance). Since Wide covers your entire frame, you'll just see the one box for your frame.

im looking through the view finder and seeing another frame with white outline and all the settings infor qround the edge outside the frame how do i get rid of this
@PeltierPhoto

You can try cycling the DISP/BACK button or customize your Disp Custom Settings.

What a silly OVF....Just use the EVF and call it a day. Not only do you see the exact image you'll get, it's already corrected and doesn't have the frame jumping around everywhere, and you keep your guide lines which is helpful. I dislike how the guide lines remain static in the OVF.
