Early on when I owned an X-T and an X-E for more serious use, and an X-A for casual "it's ok if it breaks" use,I had the realization that I can seamlessly exchange lenses between them, which is so flexible. Compare that to other brands where the path from entry level to pro level usually includes a sensor format change that means you end up with mismatched lenses. They might fit the mount but they're not perfectly matched to every body.

I think you missed the most important thing about Fuji medium format. It undercut the price of all other medium format by an amazing amount and added features to those cameras that had been the exclusive domain of smaller formats so that they could ask why buy a full frame camera? Fuji created a whole new market in both APSC and affordable medium format that others are competing with.

I agree about their film sims. I just came back from a pre-baby shoot and one thing I strive to do is to be able to get the clients some of their favorites from the shoot as high quality jpegs right after we're done. All we have to do is ensure we have very good exposure and a clean frame and subject during the shoot, and then the in-camera jpegs do the rest. Plus we can also do minor tweaks in camera if need be. It goes a long way in this day and age of smartphones and social media if we can get the clients their favorite shots for socials right after their shoot. It improves the overall experience. This is also why I moved over from shooting only RAW to RAW+Jpegs.

I agree with all of your good/bad. I imagine you could do another video with more comparisons like this for Fuji. I LOVE the film simulations. When I was shooting film, back in the day, I primarily shot Fuji Veliva, Acros, and others. I got a little bored with what I was doing, but the X-T2 reinvigorated my fun and creativity for me. Having that classic film representation is wonderful, along with creating custom "films" based on them. On the bad side, they don't seem to be quite as open to pushing out firmware updates as they used to do. When I got my X-T2, there were many updates that almost made it seem like a new camera, but they seem to have moved away from that and save the updates for new bodies and $$. I'm holding out hope that they'll have some solid firmware updates for autofocus tracking and subject detection, as they are still lacking there. All that being said, I love my X-H2, although I miss my X-T dials. The bigger body, the hybrid features, and the resolution are fantastic for me.

I have seen so many videos where people use the self timer to prevent camera shake, why not use the app? The larger screen can be used to assist in focusing and the exposures can easily be changed without touching the camera. Instead of having an unreliable app that a lot of people complain about. I think the main thing with Fuji and auto-focus are the lenses. I have used one of the older 18mm f/2 lens as well as one of the newer 35mm f/2 and the newer one definitely works smoother and doesn't flutter nearly as often. Fuji needs to continue to improve their lens and consider not selling some of the older ones so people can maintain a better impression of the focusing and lenses.
@MarcioK
@MarcioK Год назад
Best things with Fuji: - Colors. Beautiful JPGs, do not need to spend time tweaking RAWs in a lot of cases - and very good RAWs too when you need it. - Punch in focus in video - don't know if all models have (my X-S10 have), and was the single most wanted feature when I used m4/3. - Very good lenses. The Nocticrons are lovely, the 18-55 and 55-200 are VERY good. Bad things, all solvable in firmware: - Crazy face/eye AF - with a single person on the scene, wroks well; not as good as some brands, but well enough. Put 2 or more people on the scene, and the focus box jumps like CRAZY between the people on the scene. The manual says that the center-most people will receive priority - nope, very ofter a person in the corner receive the box. Try to change the focus to zone or single, to limit the deteted faces: nope, still search in all the scene. You could change the focused person with the joystick, but after some seconds, the focus box change to another face again. Big problem in still, but in video... - ...it becomes even worse, beacuse you don't have subject tracking in video (in still, I could use tracking to stick to someone's face). Have a lot of video ruined by it. C-AF in video, you have to use single focus point, and move it with the joystick as a "tracking mode". - IBIS: works well in stils, but still "jumpy" in video. Needs just to make it smoothier, please hire someone from OM Digital or Panasonic - their IBIS are top notch for video. - Not firmware: smaller and lighter lenses, the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and the Nocticrons are a good exemple. The 16-80 f/4 is a bad example. Maybe expand the XC line, with (good) plastic bodies, a XC 16-50 f/4 ou f/3.5 zoom would be great.
@MarcioK
@MarcioK Год назад
Oh, and please, please, PLEEEEASE keep the 26mp sensor in the X-T, X-S and X-E lines, with the newer processor. And a X-E5 with IBIS, even if the body have to grow a little, I would preorder it ASAP (Panasonic makes the GX85 / GX9 with a small body and IBIS, for sure Fujifilm can do it).

And finally , this could be a big topic .... i think ? Maybe ? Possibly ? .... or not :) , but which cameras made good improvements due to updates over time and are still worthy to buy today ? I have a Sony A73 which has never been back to the shop for anything let alone an update , would it be worthwhile and how can i check if there are any update s ? And it may even be interesting to ask the question , how many camera owners even bother to think about camera updates ? Love your work guys .

Fujifilm “Film Simulations” is a huge selling point to the cameras. I am shocked that with three new high end cameras (X-H2s, X-H2, X-T5) that they didn’t introduce new film simulations. Another complaint on Fujifilm's cameras is that they dont' seem to update their older cameras anymore with new features, only when there are new lenses released.. When I got my X-T2, its firmware was up to 4.xx. But with X-T4, its current firmware is only 1.60. Despite the processor limitations, I'm sure there are some minor features they can add. For example, Only X-S10 support Instax Print with Instax Wide Link, which is a huge bummer. And they could have give this feature to X-T4 via firmware upgrade.

I love what Fuji have done with their lineup, no complaints TBH. Maybe of any feedback, just some brighter MF lenses to make the most out of a larger sensor's capability and get a more unique look. Their current MF lenses get you comparable results to 35mm in terms of light gathering capabilities. I know these will be bigger lenses but I really think they will increase the appeal of the GFX system.
@BrownieX001

I really like how Fuji has tried to keep lenses compact for the APSC line. But for GFX I think they gotta go bigger. The lenses don't look nearly as appealing physically and the aperture/focal length ranges aren't that impressive compared to full frame equivalents. Go bigger for GFX. It's what it's for from my perspective.

But as long as they don't allow Sigma lenses, I'm sticking to my DSLRs! In fact my first mirrorless might be an OM1. Unless the unmentioned company changes policy. But let's face it: They've never been famous for being in the 'nice guy' business. The Japanese manufacturer of audio recorders, Zoom, has given us multiple firmware upgrades. When the F8 was replaced by the F8n, they gave us owners of the "old" F8 a firmware upgrade with all the new features of the F8n, and they were many! Only a few features that were based on the new hardware we didn't get. The unmentionable company, however, hasn't even given 70D owners auto ISO in manual mode. Losing cash at every refresh - I even had a couple of GFXs (50R & 50S11). Gone back now to t3,t20 & x70 only. Added a couple of 3rd party lenses (Viltrox af 13mm & Laowa 65 macro) both excellent, alongside Fujis, 18-55, 16-55, 55-200. Too much emphasis these days on latest and not necessarily better models, if I was on a desert island, I would still only take the x70 all day long.

Fujifilm should revive its line of lower cost bodies with, say, an X-T300, adding mic and headphone ports to make it a vlogging capable camera; it'd go up against similar offerings from Canon (R10) and Nikon (Z50). The X-T200 was a well made, very affordable compact ILC camera which also served as an entry point to Fujifilm's excellent lens lineup. Sad to see that a successor was not produced.

The GFX line is a bit of a let down for me. It's great having a larger sensor in Fujifilm lineup. But disappointing they didn't go full medium format or at least something bigger. The weird 0.79x crop factor isn't being used as much as I thought for super sharp large aperture (small number) lenses or super huge focal range lenses. Wish they went a bit bigger like the Hasselblad or tried a photo camera with sensor close to as large as the Mamiya RB67. I also feel they are diversifying way to much. When that happens we have seen time and time again that there are software/artificial locks on systems. Earlier it used to be just updates and film simulation profiles, the rest was all hardware differences. I would have liked the XT5 to be more like XT4 with the new Sony style flip out screen but also tilting for photo. I would have preferred XT5 to remain the top tier for hybrid. The XPro is already photo centric so I don't see the need for XT5 to follow suit. The XE line being depricated is a bad call I believe. If it had the hybrid viewfinder like X100 and the features of XPro with tilt screen it would be great for photo purposes without restricting what the XT5 can be. An X100 with interchangeable lenses would be fantastic. I prefer 35mm on my XT4 than the 23mm on X100 for most thing. The compact X100 has its own special place, hence the price tag since it probably doesn't sell as well. The XE line could be so much better if given the chance. The XT should be the focus for high/low end hybrid options for that generation of sensor. The H line not being hybrid makes sense for video and I hope it succeeds as a video platform but really needs better lenses for that aspect. It could use more video options like mounting holes like the Sony equivalents. Also need more super zoom options for everything. Hope sigma/tamron push those out fast. The sigma high end lenses and the Sony high end lenses have lots of features that the fuji lenses don't have. With the multiple buttons/switches on the lenses for various things. I would like to see more of that when Fuji re-does the dated red badge lineup. My 2cents after using and loving Fujifilms philosophy for a long time.

A rebuttal from the rabid fanbase: How dare you point out a bunch of mostly fair criticisms of the Fuji system(s)! Seriously, yer not mostly wrong... There's a lot more to the "Fuji way" than just great jpegs and colo(u)rs, and try as they might, they do have some small gaps in their mission to make a Fuji for everyone. I switched from Nikon DSLRs to the X-T2, and have since added an X-Pro3 and X-H2. They've all got their strengths and weakness, but are great cameras for general photography and capable of producing excellent video - Even if the AI AF can't yet read minds and requires you to furnish the AF system with some hints at what you want in the form of correct AF-C settings...

I have the X-S10 with the 18-120mm f4 and what a lovely combo, but when I'm out on the river shooting a fly fishing Spey casting demo, the AF will go for a wander. For whatever reason it decides that the background is way more interesting than me. Never thought that my camera would become my worst critic. I've started using the 10-24mm lens for these videos as the AF seems to wander less plus I have DoF from here to forever. I'm hoping a major firmware release might improve the AF tracking, because that is really my only complaint.

I love Fujifilm, and I use the brand for all my work, but honestly on the question of autofocus it baffles me why it takes a stacked sensor for Fujifilm to achieve the level of AF that can compete with what other brands can do with regular (cheaper and sometimes older) non-stacked sensors. This is a bit infuriating, because you need to buy their most expensive X mount camera to get AF results that canon can pull off with their... R10, R7? It breaks my heart and makes me question my choices every time I end up with some missed shots that could have otherwise been great.
@aristotle_4532
@aristotle_4532 Год назад
Their algorithms are mere conversions of mediocre photography autofocus algorithms. Video autofocus must be very intelligent in picking targets, and gentle and its decisions and transitions. This requires actual knowledge of filmmaking and development of filter algorithms to handle the changes. They dont have a background in autofocus camcorders with integrated lenses like other companies. They are not even on square one. Their autofocus controls produce different results on their three f2.8 zooms and this shows that they don't care enough to calibrate their top the line zooms. They do not offer linear focus mode speed control which is trivial to implement. The fact that they confirm autofocus when the lens motor is still trying to get to the focus point, is insulting.
@fadiheterjag
@fadiheterjag Год назад
@@aristotle_4532 I disagree, in some scenarios their AF is more than good enough to get the shot, so I wouldn’t be so harsh, but there are still relatively common scenarios where the algorithm simply isn’t there, even with a sensor readout speed that should allow them to do wonders, the same kind of wonders other brands are doing with larger sensors that have slower readout. If one of the advantages of the APS-C sensor is the faster readout speed then it feels that this advantage is going to waste with Fuji 🤷‍♂️

@@fadiheterjag In some if not most scenarios, manual focus with modern frame rates will get a shot better than the autofocus of a top performing 2022 camera. The question if it they actually compete in their category, especially considering the true x-t4 hybrid replacement, the h2s, is now into higher end camera company and twice the cost if you add the kit lens option they do not offer for h2s. The autofocus of H2s is grossly inferior to an a7III, which is a very old design. If we stop comparing to good performance in the state of the art, we become fanboys. We should not have to say that autofocus is good, it is just that it is the worst in its category.

@@aristotle_4532 I don’t do video so much or basically at all. For photos, and this is based on my experiences from real world dynamic portrait photoshoots, the Fuji AF does a very good job most of the times. There are plenty of pro photographers getting the job done with the Fuji AF and not manual focus, I don’t want to get hyperbolic, I want to be fair. It’s not about being a fanboy, it’s my experience. If the tool doesn’t get the job done it’ll get replaced, it’s that simple. That said, certain scenarios that are more challenging (say shooting a running/fast moving dog/person) become a *much* bigger challenge for Fuji and the hit rate drops considerably. This is where the competition is way ahead, and I don’t want to have to pay for a top of the line Fuji to do what a mid level Canon or Sony can do at a lower price (lens prices not accounted for, sure…)

I stopped using Fuji X and GFX in 2021 for professional work, but I’m still using an X-T3 and one or two XF lenses for occasional personal work. You nailed most of the issues (esp. the annoying front-focusing in eye detect) but I’d like to give a few more. First, the menu system is due for an overhaul. When I picked up an X-H2, I noticed that there are many additional confusing combinations. One of the issues is that the menu doesn’t give you interactive help, nor an indication why an option is grayed-out. The second issue we experienced is the lack of a good clean neutral raw file. Before you colorgrade an image we often had to get rid of the magenta cast in shadows and the cyan/greenish skintones. Esp. in GFX cameras. Finally, we noticed more sample variations than what we have with Hasselblad, Canon and Nikon. Quite a few lenses and cameras had to be returned for QA issues. So, for personal work they’re a lot of fun and reasonably priced, but for professional work there are a few caveats to factor in (at least in our experience).

A few years ago I also had to return a 16-55mm F/2.8 lens that had issues with lens element alignment. I also found the Fuji 16 mm F/2 .8 to be very underwhelming as far as image resolution but this was probably just my copy. I sent it back to Fuji but was told that it was within specification. Well, more than the flippy screen, the thing that disappoints me is the PASM interface. Around 80% of things I will manipulate from shot to shot is exposure-related, and having those be dedicated dials is inherently superior. It means never having to go into menus or think about dial and button customization or how those change by shooting mode... it means never having to remember all that if you haven't shot anything for a few weeks. The X-H1 used dedicated dials and, because of its size and grip, just felt better in the hand than the diminutive X-T series. Now the X-H2 comes around and drops the objectively better controls for more familiarity to hybrid shooters on other platforms... the business rationale makes sense, but I can't claim to be happy about its end result. Also, the X-T5 going with no battery grip is arguably less of a big deal unless you actually are using it for video. Even so, the fact that it uses the newer batteries of the X-T4 mean it will be a little more tolerable.
@ReflexVE
@ReflexVE Год назад
Artificial segmentation is typically considered to be when two devices share hardware specs but one is missing functionality in software the other has enabled. Canon is most famous for that. The X-T5 has a different physical design that omits the hardware needed for a grip. They could have chosen to design it different, and charge more but the limitation is a hard one not artificial. Based on previous generations the grip did not sell well, they were giving them away at one point. Adding cost for something almost nobody is using is not a good decision. That said they are still offering a camera with a grip and that grip is innovative in the market.

Enjoying the many reviews on GFX100s, X-H2, X-T5 and similar for some time with the amazing innovation and potential future that Fuji has been demonstrating so well. Though my current somewhat antiquated Full Frame DSLR which I brought for travel, landscape, portraiture continues to work well enough for those purposes, I have at times been tempted by the GFX100S, X-H2 and similar offerings as a replacement. The dilemma is my expanded interest into birding and this is where the new purchasing decision stops and the wishful thinking continues. While the X-H2 and similar variants might be an obvious choice, am not quite convinced on long lens suitability in low light making the Fuji 150-600mm for example a bit questionable. In other brands 300mm F4 (Oly) and 400mm F4 in others for example, make a significant and tempting difference, yet there is no such offering in the Fuji line-up. The other challenge is having responsive, accurate bird Auto focus and tracking which am also not sure is quite their yet. Would be fabulous to see Fuji making moves further in these directions. Stretching this a bit further, if such equivalent possibilities were to emerge for the GFX100s or upgrade, this would be an absolute game changer for me, based on my needs, even if the frame rate was a bit slower than the FF contemporaries (though higher than current GFX100s model). The image quality of the larger than full frame format is very attractive. Will my next camera by a Fuji? The heart says that Fuji has found the way, but the head says it may not have yet moved sufficiently forward. Regardless I look forward to following their amazing journey ahead.

Aging Fuji lenses in critical spots in their lineup really is one of the primary weaknesses. The 16-55 F2.8 in particular needs a serious overhaul - more compact, lighter weight, improved optical quality for high res sensors, better autofocus performance etc.. One of the biggest strengths of Sony APS-C / m43 are their standard zooms - the Sony 16-55 F2.8 and Olympus 12-40 F2.8 are both incredible lenses. Similar experience on full frame - Nikon Z 24-70 F2.8 and Canon RF 24-70 F2.8 both leagues better (but 80% higher price due to full frame). To highlight this the full frame Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM II is only 40 grams heavier than the APS-C Fuji 16-55 F2.8 (695 grams vs 655 grams). Fuji really needs to fix this lens.
