A hands-on review of the Fujifilm X-T50 camera, with sample photos and video, on-screen demos including menus. This video does not include ads, The musical performer in the video is Spencer Mackenzie: www.spencermac...
Just what I needed; my favourite Maarten Heilbron ever reviewing a camera that just popped up on my radar! Very lucky lad I am. All the best good sir, and thank you for another outstanding, wonderfully presented, review. Simply excellent work and words.
With the new kit lens practically the same price as the 100 VI, it's nice that Fuji is presenting a reasonable, attractive and versatile camera in this range, not just the 100 VI hype box. Even with large hands, the XT 50 is comfortable to hold, clearly better than the XT 5, but with lenses it's not quite as easy to grip as the XS 20 (almost the same performance, but much cheaper and with the flexible display much better for video, unfortunately without weather protection). Full format is still full format, on days when we mainly take photos, we go with the Sony 7 AC II, visually very attractive either, with the small light new Sony 24 2.0 or the 20-70 mm, if a lot of videos are recorded, we take the XT 50 on the left and the Sony 6700 on the right. Apart from the design, no other manufacturer can hold its own in terms of film simulations, but fortunately you don't have to resort to the completely overpriced 100 VI.
Continue to use the X-pro2 and appreciate the time when Fujifilm spent its resources on world-class build quality. That time is most likely over. Always appreciated your systematic and none bias reviews🙏🏻💐
Yes, we're all a little nostalgic for products we've used in the past. However, when I managed to get hold of an Ampex 800 series open reel recorder, I realized that my memories were much better than the unit. I sometimes wonder whether returning to a favourite holiday spot will pan out the way I'd like - it sometimes does, but I'm also always happy for new adventures!
I’ve owned the XPro1, XPro2 and now own 2 XPro3’s. I think that the XPro3 has the best build quality. I think the XPro2 has the best color. Though the XPro3 has more accurate color.
Maarten - yours are the VERY BEST of reviews. Thank you for this one. I picked up my X-T50 yesterday - 'had an X100V for about 3 years and love its simple dials. Now it's time for more focal lengths. I did most of my photography with film and in the darkroom, and like many older people, struggle with digital menus. Your videos are a great help.
Great review as usual. Just one mention about movies: the X-S20 is excelllent for it (6.2k without crop, and 4k 10-bit 4:2:2 oversamples without crop too), and much less expensive than the X-T5 (which only have 4k oversampled with a crop, as the X-T50) and the X-H2 models.
Nice video, thank you. I recently bought the XT-50 and I’m still in the process of setting it up to suit me. So far, I dislike the number of customisable buttons and dials so I’ve switched off as many as I can. I don’t see the point of My Menu when the Q menu fulfills that need better. As you say, the menu organisation leaves a lot to be desired. The app is several generations behind the Leica app and Fuji would do well to try to raise their game there. That said, it’s a nice camera and I’m happy with my decision to buy it.
It’s good to hear that you’ve been able to find a compromise between your needs and the camera’s abilities. Good thought about the Leica menu - they seem to provide inspiration for other aspects of this and other models.
love your reviews sir... always interesting and fun. appreciate your in-depth opinions on how Fujifilm ought to improve on their film sims menus, manuals and especially on operating systems reorganisations. Hope Fujifilms look into your spot-on outlook and take actions soon.
Thank you. Well, sometimes my reviews have landed in the right place and the suggestions I've made are heeded. My opinions though, can be idiosyncratic and I trust that the manufacturers rely on their user experience team and customer feedback.
The X-T# cameras are Fujifilm’s general purpose professional cameras. Starting with the X-T1, it has been their practice to release a “junior” version of each of these cameras. They denote these by adding a 0 to the name. So, these are the X-T10, X-T20… on up to the X-T50. I think they skipped the X-T40. These cameras usually have all the same technology of the bigger brother, but our smaller, lighter and cheaper. If you want a good used camera, i’ve heard that the X-T20 was particularly good and can be found at a good price, used. If you want a really good video camera, the X-T50 is a much better choice than the new X100VI.
And the X-S20 has the new 5 processor, an excellent Hand Grip, larger battery, and, at this level, the PSAM dial and small footprint. The bonus - less money than the X-T50. And ... 26 mp is what the XT-4 & 3 have used to make millions of great photos over the last 7 years. I would choose X-S20 or jump to the X-T5
@@dsego84 The X-T50 is more up to date, with the 40MP sensor, the new faster processor, a 7 axis IBIS. As far as I can see, the only advantage the X-S20 has is the flippy screen.
Excellent review as always, thank you!. And I agree with you: the film simulation dial, as implemented, was a bad idea. I also think the camera should be MUCH simpler.
Always love your videos, both content and style. Question: would you consider it worth upgrading from the X-T30, which i already own and love? (Not a video shooter, if that's relevant to the answer.) thanks
Thank you Maarten for this review. Besides being a review, I find you showing me how to access features very helpful. The XT50 is a smaller and lighter version of the XT5. I am not a fan of the 40MP sensor. For me, the 26MP sensor was more than enough. I don’t crop my images. I don’t like the large size files. YMMV. I am not a fan of the film simulations dial. I’d like a firmware update to add more choice on how to use the dial. A Fuji request. You offer a film simulations bracket function. You choice between three choices. Can you give us the option of selecting only two film simulations? For me, three choices is too much. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Thanks for your kind words. I"m sorry that you find these capabilities annoying. Luckily there are many other Fufjifilm models with smaller sensors, no film sim dial. I think they all have three film sim choices for brackets though.
I agree about the file size... would force some serious computer upgrades, likely exceeding the cost of the camera. Since I (a) shoot RAW and (b) am not interested in trying to mimic filmstocks-gone-by, the simulation dial seems a waste of precious top deck space
Hi Maarten, may I join the other commenters in thanking you for another extremely well presented video? Do you happen to know if it’s possible to take a still photo from a Fujifilm or Nikon Z7 video like one can with the Canon R5? Best wishes from 🇬🇧.
I loved my x-t30 also, but got annoyed with some shortcomings, mostly wanted the IBIS, then got myself an x100vi... and it's just too much I think, I learned that I don't really want the optical viewfinder or the leaf shutter... the built in ND can be useful, but I could live without it. The extra resolution is a burden, larger files, I opted to shoot heif only just to manage it easier, but I might even select a lower resolution setting because it adds up. I recently sent some photos to a local photo contest and they asked for 40cm 300dpi and I had to downscale my images by quite a bit, 40mp is just overkill for this type of camera, I don't like that they crammed it into the x-t50 as well, this also made it more expensive.
I liked the d-pad and drive dial on the x-t20, and for the x-t50, they could have just added an extra marking on the dial for film simulation, controlled by the d-pad to scroll through the different simulations. On the x-t20, i customised alot of things to the d-pad, so i was just wondering what you do on the x-t50 with no d-pad? Can you customise things to the joystick instead? I also used the top fn button to control the drive dial advanced filters, etc, so can you still do that in the x-t50? Hope you understand what i mean!
@@MaartenHeilbron : Thanks Maarten ... Been interested to one day purchase a Fujifilm camera, so we keep on watching your amazingly informative videos...Great learning experience ... Take care for now ❤🙏
Every new release feels more and more like Fujifilm is just tring to cover every little niche for cameras instead of focusing on actually innovating. I know there's only so much you can improve at this point, but I feel like Fujifilm is trying too hard to create specific products for specific needs instead of making a good and balanced camera.
That feels like a reasonable assumption - and what's wrong with that? Let every photographer find their ideal camera based on design and functionality.
Thanks Maarten, as always it is a beautiful video. This film simulation dial is what bothers me, I understand many like those simulations but to me this is a useless gimmick. First because only the Astia changes the skin colours from typically Fuji red to gold-ish, while other simulation changes are mostly superficial, but the most important thing about those so called simulations is their linearity, which is the absolute opposite to how a real film work. In audio world analog simulations are much, much closer to their analog cousins as they are almost identical, but in photography we still do not have non-linearity.
If you have a look at the variations using a colour chart and review with histogram and vectorscope, you'll see that there are more differences that you might see unaided. I this video, I demonstrate using the X-S10. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OL1XuYrY7h8.html
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks, I watched this back when you released it. 🙂 Putting those differences aside, it is still only linear change in one axis, it is basically a colour and gamma preset that applies to your raw data. Film is not linear as it changes its properties depending on different conditions, so when you over-expose it the film changes its curves in more than one axis, the blacks, mids, and highlights gamma and colour moves differently. With digital this does not happen. In audio this is very well done by adding harmonic distortion, but it is not linear and static as the input signal determines not only the amount of the second and third order harmonics, but also their relative levels as well, and also the compression of the main signal. In photography this would mean that when you approach the highlights clip the simulation would bend the curve differently for the entire range to simulate how the film works and it will then be a real, non-linear simulation. What they have now is only a static preset slapped onto every capture no matter the conditions, and this is my problem with it as it does not really simulate how the film works.
Does it get as hot as x-s20? My xs20 shows the alert warning in standard mode after 15 minutes navigating through the menus with the lcd all the time turn on.
It depends on the external temperature, but I suspect it's about the same. If this is an issue for you, consider a Fujifilm model that has an optional cooling fan, like the X-H2S or X-T5
Who made your old and current inteo musics? They both classic and fit you well! By the way, how do you make enough living by just the ads? Can you make review of Nikon Zf too? By the way, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, currently I'm looking for more works, do you love to have a logo for your channel's branding to have a memorable graphic based monogram logo to help your audience recognise and follow your channel easier? I would love to design a photography themed logo inspired by your direction for you! Let me know if you interested to make it happen! :-)
My music was composed by Adam Sakiyama, he should be famous one day. I don't make very much money from RU-vid, but as I'm retired and "fully funded" I don't need to make this a commercial enterprise. If Nikon would lend me a Zf, I'd be happy to review it. I feel that my b/w photo is sufficient logo and branding, but thanks for your kind offer.
