Great video as always! The video spec bump seems odd at first glance and a bit limited by the higher megapixel sensor, but good to know it didn't overheat in 4k25p. Plus, IBIS helps overall quality of output. I had the X100F and enjoyed it until selling to get something more general purpose. This version does make it feel a decent amount more versatile.
No better way to spend my lunch break than joining for some virtual leisure time in Japan with the respectable Sir Gordon Laing. All we need is a Japanese Brighton Pier lookalike.
Gordon, thank you for the excellent preview. I owned the F but sold it before the pandemic and missed it, so I've preordered the VI. Seems like a great upgrade for the series. Shame about the high price, but then everything seems to cost more these days.
I am glad that Fujifilm kept the hybird viewfinder. I like the hybrid viewfinder. Like a LEICA, it does not put a layer of abstraction between you and the subject. It doesn't go blank during the decisive moment, as Cartier-Bresson would say.
Thanks for the preview Gordon! Lots of other reviewers have mentioned as well that IBIS is not as effective with the OVF in use vs the EVF. Can you share any specifics?
IBIS only shows the steadier view when composing electronically, so on the screen and EVF. It's still working with OVF, but you won't see it when composing. This in turn may make you hold the camera differently, but the end result should be the same.
What a fun camera, thank you for the thorough review. Would love to see a comparison between X100VI and a Sony crop sensor with a Sony 6700 with a 24mm f2.8 G lens. Yes, I know they are different, but I think this is a decision many Sony shooters would make.
13:55 IBIS is everything. Those X100V owners will need to swallow their pride now - telling everyone you do not need IBIS with X100V or even the VI. Fanboyism at its finest. Now, will try to save money for this great camera 😉
Hey @cameralabs Does the IBIS and internal ND work simultaneously in video? If so, that is an extremely rare combination. I have watched 5 reviews now have haven't heard anyone talk about it. Thanks for another great review.
@@cameralabs I dont think theres necessarily a technical reason they wouldnt work except for it's just that rare of a combination for video lol it's like a dream combination, but typically it's been you get one, or the other (IBIS vs Internal NDs). I think the Sony Burano has both maybe and it's like a $25k cinema camera lol
@@cameralabs Thanks for the reply. Cine D and BHPhoto responded to my question saying that they will work at the same time for video. Will look forward to your full review to see it demonstrated. I also hope Lumix will add this combo to future cameras.
Really good review, as always. Can I make you aware if you aren’t, or if you have any control, but 2 adverts before you start and then more every 4 minutes! It really breaks the flow ☹️
The ads are placed by RU-vid and vary on region, so I have little control over them. They do however fund my job, so are a necessary part of making videos unless enough people are willing to pay a subs fee or a regular patreon.
I have an x100s that I still use with off camera flash because of its awesome leaf shutter. Does this new one still have a leaf shutter? I’m kind of out of the loop but if it doesn’t then is high speed flash sync achievable with whatever new technology is available now?
Thanks Gordon, Great review as always. As I am, like you a long term X100V owner, do you think it would be worth upgrading? The IBIS does sort of sway me. Any thoughts ? cheers mate.
If you intend to shoot video, then yes, definitely, but if not, then less reason to upgrade I'd say. Unless you find the 26mp images too low res. I find them fine.
Good points, but I think the Ibis will do it for me. I have one on pre order as I can get a good price for the V so the upgrade is not too expensive then. Thanks again. 👍
The preorder is even gacha-fyed in china. Really hope fuji can keep things moving smoothly. I really hate the jello and already have 2 xh2s, don’t know if this camera can bring me the true Fuji joy .
Health and safety for factory workers in China is not as good as in Japan. This means that they'll be able to chug out more cameras, but it also means that more people will fall sick making them. That to me is reason enough not to upgrade.
@@lsamoa agreed, workers are almost invisible to consumers. Society is well segregated here in China. Canon used to manufacture near my home town, they had an Amazon standard, yet somehow the state medias called canon ‘malicious’ for being too generous to workers. So f*ed up.
@@cameralabs I’ve seen comments about the video asking that it be deleted from the X100V. I’m a clips kind of video user. Maybe I’ll use this feature on my VI when it arrives. Why has Fuji stayed with the 2.5mm audio jack? Boo! Off topic. Wondering about crop mode to 75mm. What resolution will that be? I have the TCL and glad to hear it will work on the VI. With the TCL what resolution with the 85mm crop deliver? Hoping due to people selling their V to fund the VI purchase and more supply availability the V premium will tank its price. I was never going to pay a premium for a used camera. Not a radical improvement of the V. Like most X100 iterations this is an improvement. I can see this as my last new camera purchase. All products have a launch time and date, and its normal for reviewers to have them before hand. So yes, all will publish at the same time, as its the earliest they can
@@cameralabs I am in the opinion that Fujifilm shouldn't prioritise keeping the size of the X100 series as small as possible, this should be the least of their priorities, if the size of the X100V1 was 10mm wider, taller, and thicker it would have been able to design a larger battery and improve other features and still be smaller than Nikon Zf. By the way I don't expect you to reply to this.
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO I always reply to comments! Each to their own, but if they'd made it bigger, it wouldn't have had any compelling difference with say, an X-pro or another model in the range. They key differentiator of the X100 is that it's smaller than the others. To me it's very important. in fact I'd like it to be smaller, more like the X70.
I didn’t realise until today that the 4-stop internal ND can be used for video and that this functionality was added to the X100V in 2021! That is pretty cool!
@@bacon.dumpling while internal NDs are obviously not a feature for hybrid cameras (at least outside of Olympus / OM Systems for photos only), I wouldn’t be surprised if LUMIX puts an internal ND in the anticipated S1H Mark II. If so it might be the next big tech advancement in that category of cameras.
As much as I enjoy your videos I love the fact that you have the written review on your website too! Somewhat prefer in fact only in that it is a fast read. As for the camera: if the V was something you were still looking for this one is a strong upgrade with IBIS as the main selling feature and like many cameras some added video tools. The added resolution of the sensor a plus for photography. Very tempting if not intended for a ‘floating head of doom’ type use! $2160 here in Canada- add another $500+ for a limited edition though.
Wish they literally fixed most important problem with v. The battery(i would have happily accepted slightly thicker body. 150-200 photos is nothing. Also the uhs1 sd, old ass lcd, no 3.5mm (so carry adapter which vanishes any Benoit of the size.) also to lesser extent but the same buffer & 40mp 88mb raw's & slow ass uhs1 all make the occasional burst shooting almost impossible.
Best preview I have seen so far, thank you. IBIS looks quite effective and honestly the new sensor does look sharper which I think x100v needed for folks who are used to full-frame cameras with good optics. Overall, it seems to be a very worth upgrade.
The only thing worth the upgrade is the ibis. I don’t think you need the 40mp over 26mp on a camera like this. The Ibis though - that’s a worth some thinking.
Is it just me or did Fuji just passed up multiple opportunities to call this something clever like the "X100 VID", "X100 ViDEO" or "X100 VIS" as this sounds like a refresh of the X100 V.... well on paper so far.
Nice (but, for reasons, I'll be staying with my S ... reasons being S cost me $200 AUD at a time the T was the current model which is great value for a second body for travel, where as the VI is over, well over, $3000 AUD once you add the lens hood, second battery, and charger)
@@cameronrramos was selling stuff at a camera market - apart from a couple of Holga cameras I sold out about an hour before the end of the day was and pretty cashed up (sold a whole fridge worth of colour and slide film so we're talking easy thousands in pocket) - stall across the aisle from me was a deceased estate sale had half dozen digital cameras left as well as some Mamiya RB lenses (and other film camera stuff stuff) - I put an offer on the RB lens I wanted and asked the price on a few of the digital cameras when he said $200 on the X100S I questioned him and he confirmed the price so I went Yeh why not remember back 2016 X100's were not the influencer driven hot property they are now, more a quirky camera with more than a few flaws (perceived and real) so they depreciated pretty hard... now even the S is worth around a grand seen that with old film cameras like the old Nikon F3's I got for a song (or free) 5 years later being able to sell them off quickly for close to a grand, My Mamiya 7 cost me under $500 back early 2000's but would sell for for 6 or 7 grand with 65 and 80mm lenses
How come "vee" is followed by "six"? Should the sequence be "vee", then "vee aye", or 5 and 6? Anyway, at least we know the camera is Cockney-friendly, as it has HEIF. Hampstead Heif = Teef 🦷🦷🦷🦷🦷 📷
WOW! The most impressive thing is how did they manage to make it record and hour of 4K footage without overheating? Because mine X100V can handle about 5-7 mins before turning off:))
That was a very impressive "first look" video which was very informative indeed. Gave me all the salient info especially regarding the new image stabilisation which you will definitely need with a move to a 40Mp sensor.
The usual Gordon Laing standard . But the only one to say first looks review. When you think about it folks no flannel, but straight to the point so thanks for that Gordon.
If you want to fund the the VI with the V sale, I’d suggest doing it quickly. My guess is the X100v premium is going to disappear quickly. You can’t steal in slow motion. Good luck with your decision. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
4:30 I never used the OVF on any X100 I owned either. I didn't see the point, since I can see the live exposure when using the EVF. Yes, I understand some people just like to be able to see the 'real world' and want to use the OVF, but to me it's a bit pointless. Getting the exposure the closest to what I want in-camera is the most important thing to me (and the framing I see in the EVF is what I get on the final image also, so no looking for framing lines). To me the OVF is more of a gimmick than something that's really needed. It's only needed as a personal preference, nothing more. A good EVF is much more useful/practical overall. And yes, as you mentioned the camera would be made less complex without adding the OVF option (and probably less expensive as you mentioned). To me the OVF is all cons and no pros. I doubt they'll want to bother with an EVF only version if they do keep an OVF available. I'd say keep the OVF as an option on the X-Pro line and forget it/remove it on the X100 line.
Very impressive specs and price…seems like a great value. But I prefer the simpler design of Leica Q series. That said, even kitted out, it is only 1/3 to less than 1/2 of a Leica.
Almost 2000£ in UK for x100vi - this camera is over-hyped… i had v version and i was hopping that fuji will add at least 28mm( full frame eq) and then pair it with 40MP so you could crop it to 35mm ,50mm, 70mm - but they decided to keep 35mm as standard. Maybe in some time i will give it a try again but for now Ricoh is my choice.- I will give a fuji 👏🏼for great timeless design.
A little on the pricey side for something really only suitable for taking casual snaps. The 40mp resolution is just another marketing gimmick and won’t magically enable the output from this to get anywhere close to the image quality of modern mirrorless F.F gear at a similar price point, especially in more difficult light, using higher ISO’s. If compact size is the priority there’s plenty of much cheaper crop sensor options that will do the job just as well - but hey, if people want to throw their money away 😊

In every circumstance I would prefer my little Olympus EM10 with interchangeable lens over this Fuji. But I guess most people would choose otherwise.
Hopefully there will not be a loss of quality with the move in production to China. Time will tell. Otherwise I say well done Fuji. However I believe I will hang on to my X100V for a while longer.
I think a comparison between this and plausible alternatives would be intere4sting. I have an OM-D E-M1x. Good camera, but not the lightest.. I have a G 9. Good camera, lighter than the Olympus, but still not small. For me, this would be a contender for use when I walk around, for serious but not serious photography. This could be a contender, compatibility with my other cameras doesn't matter, thouhg I might have some batteries for this, the battery model number looks familiar. For me, if this is a contender, what else is there? How do they stack up against smaller mirrorless ILCs? A separate matter, how does X-Trans stack up against other smaller mirrorless cameras, those that have sensor-shift high resolution. One of the advantages I have seen touted for those is improved colour rendition, as is claimed for X-Trans (and Foveon.) 40 megapixels in a single sensor readout is one advantage here,
Do not buy the XF23/2.0. This is not a great lens. Buy the XF23/14 WR (if you want to have 23mm). Way better Image quality than the X100V or VI. The XF18/1.4 is even better than the XF23/1.4 WR. But this is 28mm, not 35mm in FF.
I'm usually the one to be the negative Nancy poking holes in new releases and I'm not a Fuji fan by any means - but this actually seems like a very appealing little camera.
@@thejerrycliff Thanks, I guess I've waited this long so I can keep waiting. As good as the VI is, I won't spend that much on both an X100 and an X-Pro.
I suppose if you want to travel to Venice and wear a baseball cap, this camera might be for you. But ultimately it's a big let down, Just get the XT5 and a couple of faster lenses for versatility.
This looks like a solid upgrade over the previous model. I've never owned X100 series Fuji camera, but I might consider trying this one. Great first look Gordon, I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, it sold out really quickly BUT unlike the X100V, they can produce more and will do. I'd expect it to become a lot easier to buy in a few months. Hopefully.
