Fujifilm X100 VI vs Xiaomi 14 Ultra vs Vivo X100 Pro Street Photography in Hong Kong

I took the two best smartphone cameras -- Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Vivo X100 Pro -- and the most hyped "real" camera (Fujifilm X100 VI) out to the streets of Hong Kong for a street photography test. I concede I am not skilled enough as a "real" photographer to fully take advantage of the Fujifilm X100 VI's full capabilities, but I was interested in seeing how these cameras perform mostly in point-and-shoot situations anyway. By no means is this a scientific test, just something I did for fun.

Your method of comparison between these devices is what most of us normal layman people would do. Buy it, take it to the streets and test it just like you did. You put it out in real world situation without predetermined condition.

@@Top_____G Xiaomi uses the Leica color philosophy. And that´s the reason it is not liked by many. Leica may excel in certain areas but their color philosophy is not a good general purpose one. To say that Xiaomi colors do fit the colors of the Fuji is wrong. It depends on how you adjust your settings on the Fuji. In the examples shown the Fuji is mostly underexposed. Which might be true to life but not the best choice for a good photo. Also there are many different color profiles to choose from on the Fuji cameras.

@@sconcepx any camera within 5 years ago till now, with a cheap kit lens destroys smartphones fake portrait shots, flash shots and sports shots. Slap a cheap tele lens and you will outmatch all smartphones for much much better telephoto zoom shots. How about wildlife or flying birds or running kids photography? I am not hating on smartphones because i use mine a lot but the fact that people believe you can take comparable shots to a camera with a smartphone is ridiculous to me. Also beginner photographers are into HDR which can be outmatched by any camera with exposure bracketing techniques. Photography is a different world and if you want to unlock your camera's full potential you must learn it first. Btw This Fuji X100VI has multiple HDR settings in the camera which the reviewer unfortunately doesn't know about.

So, Ben you don't need to feel pressure to disclaim you are not a photographer, we all know you have a good eye to take great photo and that make you a photographer to some :) And beside not all "purist" photographer think that bad about smart phone these day, only certain type of people perpetuate those nasty stereotype that photographer hate anything that is not at least full frame equivalent lol Do what you love, with the tool you have, with the budget you can afford to. The difference is that smartphone high dynamic range looks fake because it is ultimately a blend of multiple exposures. This was a very interesting comparison, and it shows how the image processing target a certain look (I wouldn't even be surprised if the ML models have been literally trained like this): in this case Xiaomi 14 Ultra targeting a "straight out of a camera" look while the Vivo targets a "post processing HDR look". One thing I would love to see in a single phone camera app is the ability to choose between these looks: "raw", "SOOC", "Post HDR" instead of having to pick a phone to have a single look.

I'm a professional photographer. IMO the Fujifilm X100 is undeniably just a fashion accessory. I can't imagine using it for any kind of serious work or even to maximize shooting pleasure simply because it has a non-removeable fixed focal length lens, and all the "film looks" can be done in post processing anyway. So for a professional photographer like me, if I want convenience I use a smartphone. If I want to get more serious about photography I get a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, and a pancake prime if I want that Fujifilm form factor. Do professional photographers buy the X100? Yes, because they want to look good to other people with that retro styling.

Is there an option to turn them off or only in Pro mode photography we can get non Leica mode results ?

On the other hand if you plan to shoot raw and edit it afterwards in the lightroom or photoshop those photos would destroy the ones taken from the phone. You should have also pointed out that dedicated cameras can also shoot RAW-format which allows you to have better control over the look of your photos in post processing. You could edit all the images you shot with Fuji to look basically the same as the phone pics.

@cruzdesangre2850
@cruzdesangre2850 2 месяца назад
As you said, the reason why the camera looks worse than the phones is due to phones post processing shots the same moment the picture is taken, while with the camera you're forced to do it afterwards. The advantage the camera has is being way easier to have its photos post processed, because they come out in much better quality, allowing the user to edit any mistakes. Unless you blow out the highlights, you can fix basically anything else you don't like. Some people may prefer a phone, others may prefer a camera. But it's up to the user to decide what tool they wish to use to produce his or her art.

I have the vivo x100 pro and thinking about returning it right now. The ultrawide camera is really bad and the main camera can't do any close-ups without loosing details. Lots of unnatural bluriness around the image (not talking about bokeh now). It's more miss than hit for close-ups. It is the big sensor and optics. The main camera is just excellent when shooting from say 0,5m or more. The telephoto is great for what it is, good also for outdoor macro shots. I need to shoot lots of close things and text and it is not possible. Impossible to shoot simple text on A4 letter. It has strange uneven and artificial bluriness, 2x on main doesn't help much and you loose details. It makes strange halo around paper edges and other objects too. Ultrawide takes the close shot fine, but looks very noisy and worse than my huawei p20. I expected more, It doesn't work for me, I'm dissapointed.

Many photographers enthusiasts will get triggered by this and I'm seeing a lot of comments already. Most purists are snobs and will not even look at this video or just laugh at it while the majority of the people won't even know the difference once it is put to social media without side by side comparison. You can brag about spending hours on lightroom, Photoshop etc, where it usually gets seen by laymen by 2 secs and scroll away. I'm also getting into Photography and had that mentality that "you shoot what you love" and I don't care about social media or what other people think. But I really hate seeing snobs which don't understand that People like me, came to Photography because of smartphone cameras

The only thing I wish to get an update/fix on is the front camera HDR in indoor lighting. It tends to overexaggerates the brightness and shadows to the extreme, making naturally lit indoors like night, and making brightly lit spots and windows look like the sun.

I would say with the xiaomi, the flatter more natural "no processing" is nicer like a DSLR. once you play with lens filters, surely it can match mirrorless cameras and DSLRs. Can't wait to play with filters on the 14 Ultra and compare it to actual cameras.

If you ever got the chance to play around again there is high dynamic range mode on Fuji also where it bumps up the ISO but gives you a better dynamic range without any computational photography shenanigans. Probably would make it a bit more closer to smartphones. Love your reviews or blogs or vlogs or whatever hell they are they are awesome!

That's so true Ben, smartphones are really being taken for granted cause we've gotten so used to having the best of them around... You definitely didn't get the best out of the 14 ultra too, that beast is a photographer's choice... Using automatic doesn't do it justice, it's the amateurs mode...

You haven't even touched using different film simulation (if you want high dynamic range, choose eterna) or making custom profiles, with which you can boost dynamic range even more by bringing down highlights and boosting shadows, you can add clarity, change saturation, etc. So if you have the opportunity, try different settings.

supprised to see how Xiaomi 14 U is close to a professional Fujifilm camera. Xiaomi is definitely producing pohotos more closer to real camera. But the perk of smartphone cameras is the computational photography. In that sense, I believe Vivo takes the lead here by a notch. Vivo's software, despite impressive, needs some adjustment in terms of color, HDR, sharpness to balance between camera and smartphone camera.

I am an amateur photographer and if you fully understand your gear with the fuji you can have way more dynamic range than any phone (you can shot on raw for un to 7 stops of dynamic range or use dr400 or hdr800 for point and shot high dynamic range). Also the big probable with smartphones after the bad lens quality is that they tend to shot at really low shutter speed like 1/10 or sometimes even seconds. It is fine if you have still subject since smartphones have way better stabilisation than any cameras (due to small sensor) but usually nothing is really still, for example three do slightly move or sometimes there are micromovements. In fact if you look closely you will notice that most of the time (especially in low light) the photo isnt sharp enough. A bright low light image of the vivo gets absolutely demolished if you just turn up the shadows on the fuji, but i understand that for the normal user a phone is an easieral and faster experience but it is not quite as fun as the experience you get with a fuji

and worth mentioning that most photographer will use bracketing and stacking to produce HDR images, so it's important really to know how to use the camera
