Your film simulation settings show me how much these can do, I've always trended to extreme shadow/highlight pushes (+3 shadow, -2 highlight) and after testing your Astia setting out.. I almost gain a stop of light at the JPEG level as far as shadow detail goes.
Great samples. I shoot in Acros and Astia as well. The odd time Velvia. I primarily shoot weddings and they are Astia +1 highlight +1 shadows .. I like the little extra contrast. NR -4. Sharpness +1. For Acros I have default everything but Sharpness +1. I've been happy with that. I edit raw files in Lightroom CC and it does a good job with colour profiles Acros and Astia and Velvia ... but it isn't exactly the same as Fujifilm's in camera conversion.
Abdullah Saady Only to the jpeg. But in the latest Capture One 12 it can apply the film simulation profile directly to the raw file when you import if you want. I didn’t manage (and don’t know if possible) to apply the settings like Shadow Tone -1 But either in Lightroom.
This is by far, the best video on x100f on RU-vid. There are lots of reviews and tutorials out there but not much sample images. Really makes me wanna buy the camera. Great job sir 👍
Thank you for your kind words Gio! I appreciate that. I always try to incorporate a good amount of sample images because thats what I would enjoy seeing :)
Thank you for the tips. I love the images, especially the rainy day shot. Excellent balance of tone and composition to give a truly atmospheric photo :)
I know im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost the account password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Noel Brantley thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
michael powter a Fujifilm rep told me there is still a bit of noise reduction applied at -4. But you are right, -4 is the closest you can get to no NR thus better than 0.
Hi Samuel, many probs to your great channel, you bring your photography to the people in a very authentic, sympathetic and non-arrogant way. I'm german too and bought a fuji x100f just 2 weeks ago.I'm stunned by this camera and the possibilities to give pictures a very classic, almost leica-look (poor-man leica) ;-). I can't wait to give it a deeper try in my upcoming travel to berlin. The quality of your pictures shown here is unbelivably good. Pls continue your cannel in the way you do. One day, we will both shoot with leicas :-) (however i',m not sure, if this is "neccesary" anymore if Fuji continues the X-series the way they do...). greetings from (near) Stuttgart
Thank you for the nice feedback Christopher! Leica cameras feel amazing in the hands but I agree that the images (or colors) that you get with the fujifilm cameras are amazing. One day though... one day.... hehe. I'm sure you will have a great time with the X100F in Berlin! Greetings to Stuttgart :)
Great video! Quick question: is it possible to see a preview of the film simulation on the viewfinder/glass? When I shoot a video, I constantly see everything I shoot in a film simulation, but when I want to take a photo and look through the viewfinder, I don't see the film simulation. Is that normal? I would love it if I could see the film simulation all the time to know exactly what the photo will look like. Thanks for your help.
Awesome video, explanations, and sample shots! I have a quick question. When using Acros, do you find yourself intentionally raising your ISO to create more grain? How high do you push it, 6400, or higher? Or do you just leave it in auto ISO with a bracket of values (ie 800 to 6400) and let the camera deal with it? Thanks man!
Hi Samuel, thank you for this very helpful video! Got one question... when I try the setting you are explaining in the first part of the video, so the colour pictures, my photos turned out very dark. Do you know what I am doing wrong?
If you want dark blue skies you can use the red filter. But skin on people will get very bright. I like the yellow filter. It makes the skin a little brighter but not too much. But most of the time just the STD filter is good.
Hi Samuel, I really liked your video, nice sample images! The thing I was wondering though: in your Acros photos there is quite some grain, but do you add this by upping the grain setting or playing with ISO? Thanks!
Yes, i think the astia is more “default” and neutral than provia :) idk but thats what i thought gor fuji. Provia is too much saturation and clinical for me personaly, and for your wb shift, do you shift the wb
Hey man nice and straight video! I often play with custom white balance, like setting it to auto and change the reds and blues in menu. Have you any experience or advice about this?
What mode do you shoot in mostly ? Manual ? Aperture ? Shutter ? I find that when I shoot in Aperture Priority that the camera hunts + meters a little too much, and it's never that accurate.. So I've been shooting in Manual a lot and loving it way more..
Manually is fun ont he X100F. but I often shoot AUTO ISO too. And then center weighted metering and if needed I quickly go into manual iso to change exposure
Following up as I'm trying to get my custom settings down -- how big of a difference are you seeing with each of the steps up or down in each of the settings (highlights, shadows, sharpness, etc). I may just experiment with this myself but was just wondering how you came across your settings. If you have side by side images I'd love to see them. I've already been blown away by the default settings but would like to adopt a more thoughtful workflow for when I get the images back into my editor. Thanks!
I just tried a few settings until I liked the images. You could also shoot RAW and develop your photos in camera and see what you do with your settings to create a Jpeg file that you like. And then you can adjust your custom settings accordingly :)
I wish I could give you a sophisticated answer but the truth is I rarely print but when I do I use an online service that is not too expensive. I have a local print shop that does quality prints though.
i used the x20 before and i recently purchased the xt20, and i have no idea how to use it. Also, its pretty big to bring around while travelling. is it worth it to sell off my xt20 for x100f ? or should i get the sony rx100vi ? THANK YOU in advance
Thanks Jason. Every Monochrome setting in the x100 is pretty similar to acros. Acros has diffrent noise rendering though. And slightly brighter shadows.
