Find out if the pictures from my new fifth-generation Fujifilm X100V camera are better than my five-year-old X100T. I shot SOOC jpegs using the Provia film simulation with both of these rangefinder-style compact, mirrorless cameras around Kyoto, Japan, where I live. We’ll look at some of the photos and draw some conclusions.

Paul, I truly appreciate you taking the time to show comparisons between the T and V. I’ve owned a T for some 8 or 9 years and I still don’t feel the need to upgrade to a newer version of the camera. Mainly because it would cost me about $1200 out of pocket after I sold my Fuji T. My T has less than 1500 shots so obviously I’ve used it sparingly having other cameras. Still I feel Fuji knocked it out of the park with the X100 line, and I hope they continue to support it with upgrades!❤

Just got a used T. This was very helpful in the what to lookout for category. I was shocked at how good my 1st SOOC shots were. I own a group of other Fuji's & other cams but my jaw just dropped when I saw my 1st shots from the T. Yeah, I subbed!

Recently purchased the X100V for daily shoots and to enjoy the vibe of shooting an old film SLR without the cost of film. I normally shoot with an old Pentax full-frame DSLR, but it’s too big to lug around for shooting snapshots. This video and others have been informative! Thank you!

Thanks for putting this together! It was a lot of fun to see the same photos taken by these cameras put side by side. I currently own the V, and used to own the T. I have to say that overall I kind of preferred the SOOC images out of the T! I like that little bit of extra warmth. And that flare never bothered me. On the contrary, I liked it - and sometimes would deliberately cause it. I hadn’t even noticed it wasn’t there since I started shooting with the V though. The V has been an absolute legend. Loving the tilt screen, and being able to use touch to change the focus point while the camera is up to my eye. It’s a little cramped, but works much faster than the joystick. Extra stops on the built ND are really nice as well.

I enjoyed your video and found the direct comparison very useful. Thank you. For me, the X100T was like a gateway drug that drew me into the Fuji system. I fell in love with the image quality and the manual controls, and while I found the fixed lens and wide focal length frustrating at first, ultimately I found it liberating. I think it also improved my compositional skills. Since purchasing that camera, I have delved deeply into the ex system and I own nearly all of their lenses and more than a half dozen different bodies, but I will never sell my X100T. To me, it is like an old lens with unique character that cannot be achieved in another camera. The single factor which makes me consider "upgrading" is weather sealing. I love my X100T, so I'm a little scared to take it out when it's raining or a dusty location.

Most of the time, I just use Provia (standard) film simulation. I tend to keep things simple. The standard film simulation in the X-T1/X100T generation is my favorite -- especially for people pictures. I have looked at the stuff on Fuji X Weekly, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am currently experimenting with this settings on my new camera. It might make for a good video. I'll put it in my list. Thanks for the idea Randy.

Hey Rage. Thanks for your comment. I am very glad you noticed it. I think that is one of my best shots of the year. It's one where I made my luck. I shot at that location many times over the years. This time I made sure to shoot from a different vantage point. I saw how the light was falling and lined up the shot. I have a few other shots of people walking by, but then a woman walked by in a beautiful kimono holding a traditional musical instrument walked by, stopping to enjoy the blossoms. I knew then that I had the shot. Even though had only a 35mm equivalent lens, I am still able to get great shots. Limiting ourselves actually helps. I had to think about what would work. I had to move around to different shooting spots. And then everything fell into place.
@albertsmith9315

This was interesting. Regarding the exposure differential, this reminds me of the old clique analogy of wrist watches. If you have one watch, then it is always "correct". Add another watch, and if there is any deviation between them, then one is wrong, but which one? Assuming the X100T gave you results that you had no problem with in the past, then it is only the exposure difference between the two cameras that makes the question of which is "correct" something to ponder. Personally, I embrace the mirrorless cameras for the WYSIWYG finder and my thumb lives on the exposure compensation dial to assure that I get my desired effect.... almost always with minus compensation. That said, the improved lens on the V and the lower tendency for flare would make this model a first choice for me.
@PaulCrousePhoto

As with any new piece of gear, I have to learn how it works, with all of the little details. I also ride the exposure compensation dial all of the time. Thanks for your comment.

@PaulCrousePhoto
@PaulCrousePhoto 2 года назад
Hi J Yang. Thanks for your question. I also use AFS with single point, but on doing street shots, I sometime change to Wide Area instead of single point. I also set Face Detection on. Try practicing with different focusing point settings to see what works best for you. I will take my cameras out with the intention of just practicing different settings (and not trying to get a good photo) just so I know how the camera works. For example, I practiced different setting with my Sony ZV1 for a couple of months before I shot my first RU-vid video. Video was totally new to me and I wanted to have a basic competence with the camera before I put out any content. That allows me to focus on my presentation instead of mess around too much with the cameras and the mics and the lights,

I shoot the X70 and the X-T2. Usually the colours match with the Daylight white balance +1 Red, -1 Blue on the new camera. Usually you need to bump the contrast slightly, because the old camera has less dynamic range, which also increases perceptual saturation slightly.

The X100V is easily one of the best cameras I have ever owned. It is expensive because it is popular and Fuji is having production problems, probably from the worldwide computer chip shortage. X-T1 has 16mp. I have also 2 X-E1 that is also 16 mp. And the X-A10 has 16 mp. I have seen many times that cameras struggle when they add more mp. Someone is comparing the Canon 40D with the 90D and strangely the 40D looks better. Its clearer and the vegetation is more defined. On the 90D areas of nature looks mushy. Pansonic GX80 has smaller sensor but strangely pictures from that camera is also better with its 16mp sensor and that makes no sense because the sensor is smaller. I have 25 older used cameras so that I can learn to understand as much as possible. I took the X-E1 out on an overcast dull day in the woods expecting boring light and colors in the photos like the samsung nx 11 would give but the photos was just beautiful. I was really surprised.

@@Nacho_Gonzalez Buy what you can afford and exploit its potential. At the end of the day it’s about the photo not the kit. Regards Antony.

Hey Marco, thanks for your comment. You'll be waiting a long time. I LOVE my X100V and it will use it until it starts coughing out blood. Then I'll sell it to you. LOL! (Seriously, if you like your current camera -- get every last mile out of it.).

The imperfections of cameras will be looked back on as character while the relentless drive for sharpness and lack of any 'imperfections' like flare will lead to boring overly sharp confusing detail, in your face contrast that could hurt your eyes 😂

In the end, the picture is what matters. It helps to have good tools, but any hammer can nail in a nail -- although a sledge hammer would be pretty awkward. ;)

Thanks for your comment, Stay. I have had the the X100V for two years now and I can say that it is a way better camera that the old one. The much better lens, the faster autofocus and the flippy screen make it much better for me. At first, I didn't like the color palette, but I go used to it. Of course, your millage may vary.

You better should have used the exact same settings and a tripod for example to get the same perspective and to give both cameras the same point in the scene for their measurements. Nevertheless, pretty interesting video and in my opinion both cameras are quite capable for street and travel photography

Thanks for your comment. I don't shoot that way, so I didn't do it. I want to know how my gear works out the way that I used it. I am glad you found the rest of my video interesting.

wouldn't a comparison with the 24MP X100F be more honest? 2015 ....👎
