FUJIFILM X100VI - 5-AXIS IS Any Good? Let's Find Out!

The newly launched Fujifilm X100VI was available for touch and try at a local retail shop, Artishutter. I took this opportunity to have my hands on the camera, and I am sharing my quick thoughts on the X100VI. Also, I was particularly curious about the addition of 5-Axis Image Stabilization in this latest edition of X100 series, and did a quick test to verify Fuji's claims of 6 stops effectiveness.

M4/3 manufacturers should have kept their lines of expertise compact 📸 Olympus Pen-F Panasonic GM-5 or LX 100.. Proof in this Fuji that yes.. there is a market

Yes, they did miss the boat. However, the appeal of Fujifilm is the color science behind it.

@@danhoang6335Olympus colours are decent. They just need to release IP53 versions of their f1.8 primes for the OM5. No other camera can match that ruggedness. OM system can target a niche segment.

The cameras were not financial successes there have been no follow ups to the 2014 GM5 or the 2016 PEN F the LX100 at least made it to a v2 but even that was 6yrs ago. There is a small but admittedly very dedicated group of fans for the GM5 and PEN F but the echo chamber of forums often gives a false impression about popularity. m43 market share is very low and given the difficult state of the current camera market . I don’t think either Panasonic and especially OM systems will be going with niche cameras

@@jimstirling7223the OM-1 could totally be argued as a niche camera. Spray and pray birding at ultra high speed is that niche. I am not sure how many people are trying to do this type of photography, OM system seems to be betting everything on that niche.

Wow that 1 second IBIS picture was perfectly clear, I'm impressed that it was still sharp even when handheld. This is very promising for street photography and video too.

Oly EM5III can do 2-3 sec handheld exposures at 14mm (28mm equiv). I did many so far, having that camera for week.

That won’t bring new users to M43. It will preach only to the converted. OM needs to do something that brings new customers, or else they will go out of business.

Unfortunately this will never happen, current users have been asking for WR F1.8 primes for years, even before Olympus sold their photo business. Also for a Pen F and a metal built OM5. Sadly because big brand ignored their users, right now, we only have Fujifilm for any sensor size under FullFrame and Sony, Canon in FF. Nikon is making big strides and I hope they will succeed because they deserve they are really trying

Thanks for this test, Robin. I’m mainly an Olympus user but I have ordered an X100VI. Like you I have owned an X100F, sold it, and have missed it. It complements other systems well as a compact prime lens camera with unique features.

Now I want both…the Fuji and the OP3 that you recorded on! Actually perhaps just the latter though the Fuji looks very nice. Well done video and surprised you could find a VI to test. PS: Your energy is a great way to start my day!

Good to see Fujifilm improving on the X100 series. That being said I am sticking to the X100F. I was able to get a Pen-F fairly cheap which is a nice rangefinder style alternative.

honestly, at this point, i can't find any reason to invest on m4/3 system anymore unless i'm doing ultra zoom photoshoots (which i don't). thing is, other systems have already adapted most of the things that made m4/3 special (partly compactness and IBIS). but m4/3 won't ever match an APSC or a Full frame's ISO and DOF performance unless i spend thousands of dollars on pro lenses. not to mention, the access to cheap third party lenses (viltrox, tamron, samyang, etc.) not hating here. still love m4/3 but i can't really disregard the options other systems are offering.

Thanks Robin! Well I love my Fuji cameras. But, I like Spencer can’t justify the cost. But, if I was street photography all the time probably might try to buy one. But since mostly landscape, flowers and seascapes I will just hope for a Fuji X100.

Thank you Robin. I am sure Fuji X100VI is a good quality camera. It is widely discussed by different channels among HK youtubers. However, it is simply too expensive for most photographers in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, it is even more expensive than the om-1 camera!!

It's great that they added it. I wonder how it will hold up in real life situations. I'd probably expect 1/8 to be really pushing the limit with 40MP if I'm not leaning on anything to steady myself. Should be enough with the f2 and reasonable ISO performance. 😎

Beautiful camera always. Personally I do not trust the mech optical view finder of the X100. End of the day, still use the LCD or the EVF to confirm AF lock . Maybe it's just me. Anyone share the same view?

RM8888 roughly translates into £1600 so, no thank you! LOL! I can get an OM-5 cheaper than that, and Olympus rule. In fact I sort of did. Two days ago I purchased an E-M5 mk3 for *one third* of that price, and I'm loving it! 8)

However, there is no 35mm small prime equivalent from Micro Four Thirds that is weather sealed. No matter how you look at it, there is just no equivalent setup from Micro Four Thirds.

@ong I did watch or read something here recently that if the front barrel on the lens doesn't rotate, the lens is a lot better at coping with bad weather and dust etc than its other rotating front ended counterparts. We should be happy that at least a 17mm exists. But why no 14mm, 28mm equivalent? Yes, Lumix do one, but the lens leaves a lot to be desired in terms of chromatic aberration. I think tha t was your main criticism after you first reviewed it?

Iwould like to see both a PEN F II and at least one compact camera for travel and street photography. Throw in some TG series body colors and make them rugged. OMDS needs something for everyone. That Fuji's cool, but I don't like the idea of paying $1500 US for a fixed lens camera (although it's kind of reasonable for a 40MP senaor brand new).

I think the tilt screen is perfect the way it is. The mechanism from XT-5 would have made the camera thicker and bulkier.

Olympus is about looks and style, so they not going to make something like GR. The only thing that monochrome is good for is portraits.

@@NightShooter87 The only situation (for me) where color is critical is nature/wildlife/landscape. But mostly I like street and urban landscape, documentary photography. You are right about portraits, digital skin tones are a hassle and make people look sick mostly.

The only thing that will save Olympus at this point is doing something completely out of the box… a Hasselblad inspired XPan… a redesigned sensor to take panoramic digital photos in a small camera…

was it significant that Fujifilm added phase-detect in 2010 (to the 2nd model of the X100) while Olympus never offered this feature in a range-finder style camera? The small e-m5 range didn't get phase-detect until 2019 by which time its brand had a poor reputation regarding auto-focus baked in (for many reviewers compared to competition) -- a former e-m1 user, current gx9/g9 user w/o phase-detect :)

the Fuji X100S, T and F had horrible AF, not on par with Olympus E-M5, which blew all of them out of water. The newer V and VI versions had significantly improved AF.

hi @@robinwong- I don't think the reality matters :) Most buyers don't try out multiple brands before buying one. I was not impressed with the phase detect of my e-m1 mark 1 and just had to write off its CAF mode. Obviously each new model improved too but I took all reviews about great OM-D CAF with a grain of salt because of that first experience. keep up the channel... it's going great guns!

But the X100V1 has 40MP, is weather-sealed, had hybrid viewfinder, and if the rating is accurate, has better image stabilization. Also, the LX100 looks wins.
