Hey guys - Dropbox keep banning the link to the RAW files due to excess traffic. It should reset every day so if you’re having trouble accessing the files try again tomorrow. Have tried to resolve with Dropbox with no luck!
Lovely video. So, the bokeh issue you're experiencing.... I don't think it's documented well enough so you may not know, but that's the leaf shutter causing that. I thought it was anything over 1/400 but I'm reading now that it's anything over 1/500 and the leaf shutter impacts bokeh shapes at wide apertures. If you flick on the ND filter and keep shutter speeds below 1/400 or 1/500 you will see the bokeh take on a totally different character that's significantly less busy. Just a quark of the lens and shutter design.
Hey Kevin. Thanks so much for this info. Have had the X100v for years and never knew this! Will give it a try over the weekend. I wonder what the mechanics are behind the leaf shutter having this effect.
I have been watching your videos for a long time, they are really good because you know how to compare the products perfectly! Thank you so much for your hard work! ❤
fyi the bokeh nervousness is definitely the leaf shutter. keep shutter speed under 1/1000 preferably 1/500 or less and it will be buttery smooth. try it. facts.
@@itsmejeremy7 yes. it is a side effect of the leaf shutter they both use. it varies in how obvious it is depending on the background and shutter speed. but it isn't just a busy background thing. it's the way the leaf shutter causes a disturbance in the rendering.
Thanks for the comparison. At 3:12 I think the X100VI just nailed the eye in sharper focus. The eyebrow on the V on the left is sharper, and softer on the VI on the right. But, better AF is kinda like getting a sharper lens. My x100v photos were often slightly out of focus, like this one.
Well done James, very informative. I see X100V prices dropping rapidly now making it the better value now, or if not quite soon. I noticed the skin tones looked overly red in video and some photo's, where you using a simulation? Finally I hope your wife got enough attention during this trip as you might live to regret the deal you made and how you allocated time🙂.
I’m not planning on getting this camera even though I wish I could have one. I just think the IBIS and the resolution are two huge upgrades for any type of handheld photography. As always beautiful video.
@@JamesReaderif Sony will make a 1XR3 at some point it will be a monster of a compact fixed lens camera. Until then die X100 line is definitely the best option for someone who wants that kind of camera and doesn’t want to invest so much money in a Leica Q2 or 3
I really appreciate your comments and thought on the cropping and digital teleconverter. Ive tried to explain in many of my videos on TikTok about how it works on the V and how very capable it is and people will not believe me 😅
I appreciate this very sober and level headed review! the creators getting free cameras and trips may just happen to be biased 😀 I noticed on my x100vi, the images are lower contrast and in my copy, a very slight bit softer in close up / macro applications. I need to test some more mid length and wider shots to see the full picture, no pun intended. great review. thank you for making this!
I hope you and your wife enjoyed Paris. I love Paris since my girlfriend and I went there in 2021. I don‘t have any Fuji camera yet, but in the last days I found myself often checking prices because they are so cool. Your video was helpful to see that the image quality of both would be sufficient for my everyday needs, so thank you!
Thank you for explaining how it treats (or doesn't upscale) the 'zoom'd in' jpg's (or hif's ) vs the X100v. I'd been wondering. Oh, by the way, I am absolutely loving the IBIS. That makes a significant difference for me.
Thank you for watching! I’m using the X100VI for a trip in London right now and the IBIS has definitely helped when the light drops low! Glad to hear you’re liking it too.
Great review. My use case is that I shove the X100V in my backpack for mountain biking and snowboarding, so I would trust the VI surviving the vibration with its IBIS.
Another banger. Not gonna lie, I’m a fan of the nervous bokeh on both cameras, and it would be the lens making the nervous bokeh not anything else I don’t think. This is a very practical review, I’m probably gonna stick to saving up for the X100V at some point in the future
thanks for the comparison. i thought i ´ll have to go with the VI because of IBIS to use it for video too but based on your test footage the X100VI footage with IBIS is shaky too so it’s required to use a gimbal. don’t get me wrong the X100VI video sequence is significantly smoother but in my opinion its still far away from great handheld smoothness. in this case cheaper X100V should be the option is i don’t need 40MP.
Absolutely love your videos and honest and "down to earth" reviews (which help to keep that Gear Acquisition Syndrome under control 🙈😁). I reckon it would probably be much easier for a creator to jump on the bandwagon and push the hype - so glad you don't do that and instead stay true to yourself. Thank you!
what a great honest video, convinced me to keep my V. while everyone is saying the 40mp is a game changer for cropping, i see no difference from your comparison. looks like the VI is a great camera but the lens is lagging behind. probably more sensible to upgrade when they pair the body up with a new lens on VII :)
yes, I think the X100VI is a transitional model to relocate production to China. X100V owners should wait for the X100VII which will certainly bring a new lens, a new battery, and a UHS-II SD card reader, and maybe other small improvements.
Ah, again such an enjoyable video! I am not interested in getting the Fuji at this time, but I'm always learning and I like that a lot. Would I be mistaken to notice that if the sensor megapixel difference is barely noticeable on the results it means now the lens is the limitation, not the sensor? And that Fuji should have come out with a sharper lens for the VI to make more of a difference ? Because the added "cropability" may take away a bit of the fixed focal length downside - why I prefer the R8. I do agree with you the IBIS is a good upgrade, it makes the VI so much more useful in low light. As for the noise... the VI has a bit more of it and as on the R7 I believe it tends to throw off AF in low light and you seem to have noticed that a bit?
Thank you as always Philippe! It looks like you are correct, we will need a new lens on the X100 series before we see any major upgrade from the X100v in terms of image quality. Very true about the R7 also. Not sure why the X100vi was struggling so much in low light for me! I do think the R8 + the 28mm is the king of travel cameras right now, it’s great in every department from cropping, low light, AF and video. I suppose it just lacks the IBIS.
The x100vi has better low light performance because of the ibis, allowing you to shoot slower shutter speed and lower iso at night. Also the new sensor it self have more DR with the files when editing, (less clipped highlights) x100vi is the winner
Interesting and useful vid - thanks. But I'm not sure it's a case of hype, really. More that the V disappeared and everyone still really wanted it, and now it's back with a few tweaks. So it's more like excitement that the camera exists again rather than that it's a radical quantum leap overhaul. That might be one and the same as hype and I might well be overthinking this! (I remember Fuji Reala film and was always a bit mystified that Fuji hadn't put the simulation in their digital cameras. So I'm glad they've fixed that).
@@JamesReader Of course I always love watching your video's, so by all means 🙂. With what I picked up from your Fuji V/VI comparison, what do you think will be meaningfully different compared to the R8 vs. the earlier comparison with the Fuji V? I'm not expecting a lot. Because of course I did watch and enjoy your earlier Fuji V / R8 comparison with a lot of interest!
I'm similar to you where my main "work" camera is a Canon and I used Fujifilm cameras on the side for fun. Ultimately I sold the Fujis and use my Canon with smaller primes for travel and personal photos. The inconsistencies of Fujifilm AF drove me crazy. They indicate green AF confirmation faster but too often it had slightly missed. The 26MP Fujis did the same thing to a lesser extent but 40MP makes missed focus painfully obvious.
I kind of like the ability to use lenses. Do you feel the new x-t50 is similar to the x100vi but with the ability to change lenses. Currently own the x100v and the only option are the two teleconverter lenses. Thanks
Nice review. In my opinion the IBIS is a MAJOR difference for video and shooting in low light. With regards to image quality, it looks the lens on the Leica Q2 did "survive" the megapixel upgrade to the Q3 but the lens on the x100v keeps the vi from excelerating. I get way better images out of the XT5 sensor with better glass 🤷🏻♂️
really? i was interested in video capability and imo the following/tracking shot of the VI is still too unstable to use. ofc it’s noticeable more stable compared to the X100V but it still requires a gimbal to offer useable footage.
I add grain in my simulations, to take off that "digital perfection", so the VI resolution has no benefits for me. IBIS is always useful but not critical for a wide lens like this. I think the law of diminishing returns has really kicked in.
Great video. Really insightful. I’ve been trying to decide if it’s worth selling my R8 for the x100vi. Love the look of the x100vi and the size, but thinking it might ultimately be too much of a down grade, especially given R8 is pretty small itself. How does the R8 handle higher iso pictures and noise compare compared to the x100vi. Assuming the R8 full frame would reduce noise better at higher isos?
I would personally stick with the R8 for pure image quality. It’s considerably better in my experience, have just been comparing them side by side this weekend. The X100vi does offer a fun, unique shooting experience though that isn’t really replicated by any Canon camera right now.
Hello, my son would like a camera for 18th birthday. He likes take pictures, has a good eye but would like a better result than smartphone. ( street, landscape sunset)Is the x100V ( backmarket) a good choice ? Do I have to wait for the VI ? Thank you for answer and the vidéo
Do you think the lens can’t resolve enough for the sensor? I’ve noticed the raws in LR softer than I expected. I love the camera (my first x100) but expected sharper image. I didn’t buy for sharpness so not a deal breaker but seems they only are using the new sensor for availability / spec sheet bump rather than a massively better image.
I think that may well be the case. I’ve been using this camera a ton these last few weeks in terms of image quality I really see no improvement over the X100v. There is still a lot to like about this camera though, and as you say, I’ve never really looked for ultimate image quality from my X100 cameras.
I’m jealous of your possession of the X100VI. I preordered on the 1st day and the store has no idea when they will receive or ship the camera. I might have to wait until the end of the year to receive my VI. So sad. It is surprising that there is little difference in the photo quality. One would assume the 40MP sensor would resolve better. The only reason I’m purchasing the VI is the IBIS. That, and the eligible availability of the VI. I’m still waiting for the V I ordered a year ago. Also, the VI is less expensive than the premium placed on the V. I may discontinue my VI order and purchase a Sony A7C. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Thank you for watching Martin, I really hope you get some good news on your preorder soon. The X100VI is a really great camera so don’t be discouraged! The X100 series in general are one of my favourite cameras ever.
IBIS is massive..don't kid yourself...it's a famr changer I would still buy an XT5 though... The fact they didn't weather seal it was simply unforgivable...that just doesn't make any sense 😒
Thought exactly the same. That this kind of camera is not weather sealed is something that really bothers me cause it’s the kind of camera I want to take with me exactly in such bad weather conditions. You can get filters and somehow protect it that way yes but still it’s a negative thing considering the price.
I've sent images from XT5 compared to x100V and the XT5 is way ahead....so by that logic the same sesnor Puy simply your getting an XT5 in a X100 form factor
Sir the last question in terms of sharpness canon r8 is better than fuji xt100vi or fuji xt100v? Actually i saw a ur full video about the same topic but my English is not good so u can tell me @@JamesReader
@JamesReader cheers brother. Also thank you an actually informative video on these cameras. I own both, so i appreciate the effort. RU-vid is littered with "first impression" videos right now with nothing of substance shared.
Sold my V and waiting for VI. Main wish is faster/better AF especially eye focus. Is that noticeably better on the VI? Also in doubt to buy XT-5 but will miss leaf shutter and gain double card slot and bigger battery. Thanx for your video!
Think the AF performance is cut short by the lens of the X100VI. An X-T5 with either the 23 F2 or the 23 F1.4 R LM WR will perform better when it comes to AF. If this is the most important point for you I would go with the X-T5 and one of the 23mm lenses.
With Fuji it’s still the same when it comes to AF performance, you have to manipulate a lot of the out of the box stuff to achieve the best results. Change AF-C to focus priority, turn of AF+MF assist and so on. Was also the point with the X-T5. After I did all that the AF was much more reliable. With a Sony you take it out of the box and almost always get the best results straight away. Wondering how long it will take Fuji to be at this point. An X-T5 is maybe on par with a Sony 1XR2 from 2016 when it comes to AF.
@@AufKohleGeboren Thank you for your response,my first camera is Canon R6 so when shooting real fast objects I would use that. Having said that, AF is still important for me.
@@freekvanbuul5100 I also use my Sony A7IV when I know that I’m in a situation I don’t want to worry about focus. With the new firmware the Fuji AF is not bad but not as good as Sony or Canon. Got the X-T5 when it was released and prior to the firmware update I tried to make shots of my son driving down a hill with a sleigh. With Eye Detection on maybe 3 out of 10 shots were in focus. After the update it improved a lot.
Thank you for watching! All the improvement seemed to be on the software side, the camera can track and detect faster but as others have said I’m not sure the lens itself self can keep up. That being said I had zero problems relying on the autofocus, but if I was capturing fast moving subjects I would have more faith in the XT5 and a newer lens.
someone else pitted it against 2 top cellphones ( not apple or samsung) an the camera had far more grainy pics an was much darker than the phones..... not worth the price
I own a h2s which is my workhorse and can’t decide between the smaller x100vi or an xt5. Sure the x100vi would be better for everyday carrying.. thanks for your thoughts
I’m torn, when it comes to this camera… I’m undecided. I went to my local camera store, all set to place an order. Every video I saw told me it was the ideal camera I could take with me on my trips and replace having to lug around with a lot of gear. I was expecting something that was pocketable. The problem? When I got to the store I saw they had a 100F - and it hit me… this camera is not pocketable at all. Yeah, it might fit in a coat, but it is not what I had made myself believe in my head. So, no, I did not place the order. I think for me the more convenient option is a Ricoh GRIIIx
I once owned Fuji cameras in parallel with Canon cameras. From your examples in the video, I see that nothing has changed over the years. The images look just as strange and unnatural as before. There is a lot of in-camera image processing that cannot be turned off.
@@conorlunt i am have about it, but its bulky when i go on travel abroad, to be honest the quality and the performance of XH2S is worth every penny, but i am a camera geek so u wanted more🤦😄😄
Yeah! That RF 28mm f/2.8 is fantastic. And the R8 is a great upgrade from the RP! It is James who convinced me of buying the R8 while I already owned the R7 and was frustrated by the R7's portrait performance. I never regretted going for the R8 for a second... great advice!
