Agree! My main camera is an old X-T2, sometimes I rent a full-frame Canon or Sony for work. When I look through pictures in my portfolio, I can’t immediately remember which picture was taken with which camera. This means that your style takes precedence over technique, no matter what camera or lens you use.

In hindsight I don't care which camera caught which moment. However, I miss moments way more often with my X-T than with my Ricoh GRIII. One reason is that I'm more likely to bring a compact everywhere, and leave a big camera at home. Another reason is Fujifilm AF drives me insane. I have missed so many amazing moments to grindy hunting, and back focusing on high contrast lighting behind the subject rather than focusing on the subject. It's just too slow and lacking in confidence to effectively document my life. So gear does matter a little, but only to the point of will it be there and will it work or not. 😂

It seems like the X-S20 and it's successors could become a sweet spot for amateurs who want a step up from a consumer level body but don't need/want a pro flagship. If they made it slightly larger, keep that grip, add a second SD slot and weather seal it the camera would be fantastic! As always, this was a nicely done, practical overview from a user perspective. Thanks and have a great week!

This is an awesome video - I’d coincidentally just bought an xt-3 and was feeling concerned about it and wondering if I should’ve gotten an xt-5 instead. Your perspective has helped me to be confident in keeping the xt-3 and a 35mm while I’m learning and starting out! Would you be willing to consider making a video of you revisiting one of your old cameras and doing some street photos with it? Like the xt-3 and a 23mm? I’d be curious about any more suggestions you have about using the xt-3

Thanks! Got the XH2 because the battery grip option was removed on the XT5, even though 1-4 have it. Wanted it mostly for the vertical trigger. Wanted the higher resolution sensor. Also, the two XH cameras have a higher resolution EVF than the XT5. I do almost no video or fast action photography, so didn't need to spend $500 more to get less resolution on the XH2s, as the other features for me weren't worth it. But as you explain, each of these cameras is suitable for particular needs (that's whey Fuji makes different models), and I got the XH2 for only $150 more than the XT5 with a FREE Fuji battery grip on a Black Friday special, so I'm a happy camper!

Last week I was in Italy with X-H2S and XF18-55mmF2.8-4 for VLOG and Photo. With dial I can swap 4K 24fps, 4K 120fps and Picture mode between Custom Mode so fast that I won't miss any shot I wanted. First day it was rained like crazy, the camera was very wet. I'm really surprised that it can stand such weather like that. Like you said its grip is quite comfortable for shooting video even at the waist level. The battery life is wonderful, mostly I need only 1 battery for the whole day. Love the X-H2S so much!

Btw, 21:02 - on the photography side, you're completely right. I use my X-H2S on photography jobs - also weddings - interchangeably. As you say though, for video there is a clear difference. My X-T3 is not bad by any means, but the X-H2S clearly has more dynamic range and exposure latitude in F-log2, especially when put side-by-side. Still, most people wouldn't need it!

Really great video. I'm coming back to photography after a handful of years, and all of my kit was old before I paused so am starting again. The X-T5 was initially what sparked my interest, but to give everything a fair chance I hired an A7iv with 24-70 GM a couple of weeks ago, had an X-H2 with 16-55 red label last weekend, and have the OM-1 ii with 12-40 arriving today. I agree with everything you say about these cameras. I really wanted to love the XT-5, but in the hand it just wasn't comfortable enough to hold for extended periods, and I figured I wouldn't really use the top dials all that much as it would just be configured to aperture priority for the vast majority of the time. What really sold me on the X-H2 was the left dial and being able to save so many configurations that could be recalled quickly. One minute I'll be shooting a beach scene, the next I need to try and grab a shot of my kids who are running about all over the place - a quick change between C positions on the dial allows for that pretty much instantaneously. Yes, I found the AF on the Sony to be stickier (and almost telepathic), but it's not terrible on the Fuji. Personally I had more fun shooting the Fuji, and prefer their colour science. Ideally I'd like one of each!

Hi Roman, I like videos like these because if we could have a one on one communication in person, it feels like the conversation we’d have! I do a few things with my Fujis. I use my XH2S for events, travel, and wildlife. I do not do video. I agree that it’s the best of the best! I actually returned the XT5 for two reasons: I found it crazy making to try to adjust to the dials while shooting events. I like the DSLR style of the XH2S for what I do. Event shooting manual which is how I shoot, it allows me to act very quickly using the various custom setting dials but it’s also so incredibly fast that when I’m shooting events. 99% of the time every shot is in focus! I don’t mind paying for the CF express cards because like you said it’s like having a hard drive in your camera! For street, which is what I do for my own personal 100% of the time, practically, I prefer the X-T30II. I have small hands and I like interchangeable lenses so it’s perfect. I don’t need to process 40 megapixel images and the autofocus is actually lovely! However, I’m in a bit of a quandary in terms of a back up for my XH2S. As I mentioned, other Fuji bodies offer the dials on top which will create confusion during events. I need to act quickly and I need a back up camera which can also be used for the sideline portraits. I’m debating whether to pick up another XH2S or just the XT3. Thank you for this video!

Its a shame Fuji decided to skimp on the XT5 to position the XH2 higher. Im all about the XT5, X Pro and X100 for the shooting experience but I might as well upgrade to a Sony rather than the XH2.

I find the X-T5 top dials actually more efficient to switch between certain shooting scenarios. If I suddenly want to switch from f1.4 + Auto S.S. to 1/30s Auto Aperture to capture some movement, I can just rotate the Aperture ring into A with the left hand and turning the S.S. dial to 1/30 with my right hand, which takes less than a second. Everything else such as Film Simulation, AF settings, Exposure Compensation etc. stays the same. The workflow with the PASM + C1-C7 dial doesn't work for me because it resets all the other parameters I've dialed in for the shooting scenario.

Hi Roman. How does the XH2s compare with the XT5 in terms of low light capabilities? I have the XT4 and in low light situations (indoors on a heavily overcast day) at ISO640 the noise is very noticeable. People with full frame cameras always tell me it's the fault of the APS-C sensor. But I love Fuji and am pretty bought in to the system, so I'd prefer not to switch if there's an alternative that handles noise better.

I am shocked to see many of my photos are so soft and not in good focus though the green box was clearly on the face of people when I took the photos. Pics from my Sony a7c with a 50mm f2.5 looks awesome with at least 95% of them are in good focus. I do not want to edit each photos in RAW for that reason I used the Fuji. Something is wrong with my setup ?

Hi Roman, I hope to hear more about what make you stay in Fujifilm rather than other brandings so far? Since those gears are similar to a full frame size, and you also edit the photos. So I think color and size are not real matters to you to choose Fujifilm. But a full frame can definitely make better image quality and more likely faster focusing and better filming. Even when speaking about price, if not going for premium zooms or fast primes, there are many choices to keep the budget down as close to Fujis. I am eager to hear from your professional perspective. Thanks a lot!

I am generally enthusiastic about the 40mp sensor but when I realized the rolling shutter/readout is worse than an XT3, I was back on the fence-it really kills the value of the ES for sports/action/wildlife photography. I use pre-shot ES and CH mode quite a bit on the XT3 and if I do any sort of panning the rolling shutter can show up. I know Fuji does not make their own sensors but they really should have done something-anything-to improve on the speed of the new sensor (at least match the XT3) and the image quality of the older 26mp sensor (dynamic range/ISO performance/whatever).

I think the absolute best “first camera” from Fuji is the X-E3 with an XC15-45mm. It’s small enough that they won’t feel self conscious using a big camera in public. It’s probably the lightest body+lens setup from Fuji so they won’t be put off by carrying something heavy. It’s literally pocketable. The lens has great stabilization and goes from wide for vlogging, to basically nifty-fifty focal length. It gets great battery life, and of course it has the same image and video quality as an X-T4 so the results will knock their socks off when they shoot their first keepers. Best of all, the price is less than a new iPad Air. I got my X-E3 open-box for $499 and my XC15-45 from MPB for like $112. I own the X-T2/3/4 and XH2S, but 90% of my non-work photos over the past 3 years have been shot with my X-E3 and either an XC zoom or Viltrox prime.

I'm an enthusiast and my current set up is an X-T5 with an X-E4 as a lighter pocketable camera and back up. I shoot stills and very, very rarely video. Regarding Roman's comments about using the 5 with zoom lenses. I pair it with a Tamron 17-70 f2.8 and a Fuji 70-300. I can carry either all day attached to the camera. Once one gets into bigger lenses like the XF 100-400 or Tamron 150-500 etc then the calculation is a bit different. For my use cases the weight and compactness of the 5 and those lenses or others depending on the project is right up there in importance.

A really nice video as always, I get it’s a job, but RU-vidrs change their gear more often than most people change socks - the greatest street photographers/documentarians of our age (McCullin, Cartier-Bresson, Franks, Winnograd, Murtha, Killip, Maier, Meyerowitz Leiter, etc etc …) created the most iconic, creative, beautiful, captivating and unique images with a camera body and prime … all more or less in manual mode … - Just get out there, shoot, enjoy, and be your creative selves 😉

RU-vidrs change their gear because it gives them new things to make videos about. This isn’t exclusive to photography. Automotive RU-vidrs change cars frequently. Cycling change bikes etc. you get the idea. It’s business. You make a video about how you spent 5 years using the same prime and body to produce world class work and only 5 people will tune in. Great for your photography but not great entertainment. The average photographer couldn’t give a crap about how good someone’s else’s photos are. They only care about their own photos and how to make them better. Hence why the gear and tips videos will always do well I don’t chop and change brands because I’m lazy and once I have a system that works, I stick with it. I do chop and change lenses a fair bit but that’s the same as artists using different brushes

But, I do think you are possibly wrong when you generalise the average photographer ‘not giving a crap about how good someone else’s photos are’ and that possibly does us average amateurs a disservice? I’m very interested in other people’s photographs, I spend a lot of time studying images (and where available videos) it’s how I have developed as an amateur and yes I definitely would be interested in seeing the workflow of how good photographers consistently produce great images using the same ‘old gear’. There are a few excellent street photographers who do just that on social media … Alan Schaller, Peter Turnley, Phil Penman, Ovidiu Selaru, Mark Fearnley, Matt Stuart, Matthias Burling, Pal2tech and Paul Reid to name just a few … but I do get the point you are making, it wasn’t a dig, it was an observation by someone who has honestly recently fallen down the RU-vid gear ‘rabbit hole’ whilst searching for my ideal street setup. Apologies, if it didn’t come across that way … incidentally I see the new GR3 has been announced … so hang on to your hats! 😊

I hate hate hate hate the ubiquitous side hinged pull out rear screen of the X-H’s. The tilt is so much better, inconspicuous, faster and unobtrusive both for photography AND filmmaking.

@@j.f.1979 I found the Zf to be uncomfortable to hold. My little finger lived under the camera. Even using the SmallRig grip or the Peak Design micro clutch didn’t really help as the camera isn’t really “curvy” in the right places and the shutter button position was a PITA. My fault for buying blind. Also, there are no highlight blinkies on the EVF or on the LCD as there are on the Fuji X-H2. I find this really useful. The X-H2 is so comfortable to hold. I thought I would miss full-frame but I haven’t so far, the Fuji really is a lovely camera to use and its film simulations are wonderful.

Drop the X-T3 for the Zf. The T3 has the worst Fujifilm colours to date and does the same thing as the Zf: retro dials. Who needs both?

Oh I'm vacillating so much. Okay I'm selling my house so funds or not as much of an issue. I was a photographer I've used my phone and smaller digital cameras over the years. Power shots and such. But I want to get back into photography for real. Primarily for myself but I also want to build a portfolio for friends who are interested in hiring me because they know me and trust my shall I put it my aesthetic in my eye.

Oops so that being said I wanted to get the XT5 but I've been hearing a lot of issues with it not being durable which you also mentioned. The H2S is awesome but if I'm going to spend that kind of money wouldn't it be better to get one of the Sony's for a better lens selection. This is primarily for travel and for doing like Aurora Borealis landscape nothing that moves very quickly but also I'll probably get myself a point and shoot for doing street photography. So I was going to go with the XT5 photo/XS20 video(or just usemy S24 ultra for Video)

For Sony I was going A7RV/ A6700 or ZVE10 What's the lenses though it's like an extra 5 grand for Sony if not more. But for my understanding their tanks compared to the Fuji what's your take if you don't mind my asking.

I have the R6 and XH2, Get the XH2S, the body and lenses are lighter and MUCH cheaper. The lack of 3rd party glass makes a RF system $$$$$.

I own an XH2S and R5. Lots of value for money in Fujifilm X-mount. R5 is a great camera but lack of third party AF RF lenses really sucks. RF is super expensive for RF L glass. AF is better in R5 but not so much that I'm not reaching for the XH2S. XH2s has much better video quality in my opinion than R5 or even the R5C. I love them both but really appreciate the value for performance and image quality in the X-mount ecosystem.

@@jessejayphotography I only use adapted EF lenses on my R6, I just added a Fringer EF-FXii adapter to the XH2, I did a large corp headshoot shoot using my Sigma 105 1.4 on the XH2, OMG, soooooo good. I like the skin tones better as well. The R6 still has a place in my bag, the eye AF is better hands down and better for shooting my kids dance/sports. The XH2 is my camera for 85% of my work.

@@MichaelFrederickPhotoyeah they really fckd their customer base. I only shoot adapted EF glass for that reason. I'm not one to spend money just for switching (photos are photos - ppl put too much emphasis on gear) but I crave a lighter setup and cheaper primes.

i have been tossing around the idea of jumping to Fuji from Canon for the past year. I like the idea of a X-T5, but not a big fan of the dials. I have bene thinking of getting the X-H2, but going from my Canon to another camera that is just like my Canon is not really that appealing either. Is there a camera that gives you a X-T5 body without the dials? Would like to have a small body and get some of the small primes and maybe just a bigger zoom lens.
@darkfeign
@darkfeign 3 месяца назад
The X-T5 is about the dials. You can pick up one of the range-finder style cameras but we're still waiting for both a new X-Pro and an X-E5 so you'd have to look at the older models.

X-S20 or X-A7. Both are regular PSAM cameras. Entry level. X-S20 is the size of the R8, X-A7 about the size of the R50.

The Sony cameras have the worst ergonomics. My hands would get cramps whenever I tried these cameras. The X-H2 and X-H2s have excellent ergonomics and these cameras are not that bulky. My Nikon Z9 is bulky!
