Fukuoka is the capitol of TONKOTSU RAMEN and man, do they make it good! Tonkotsu -- made from pork bone based soup -- is the ramen of choice here and this time, we'll go on a ramen eating binge from the famous Yatai in Nakasu and Ramen Stadium to the cheapest ramen in the city in Tenjin!
We'll also get an inside look at RAMEN UNARI's special GYOKAI TONKOTSU RAMEN which is lighter bodied than the usual tonkotsu served in the city -- and absolutely amazing!

I reviewed the ones that were recommended to me by locals plus the yatai which are famous in Japan. Don't limit yourself to these places but I have to say, I loved Ramen Unari!

Note on the criticism of the yatai area along the river:
I spent two nights at the Nakasu Yatai Ramen Stands and only 1 in 10 visitors were from Fukuoka. Most were Japanese tourists or from abroad.
I went to two yatai and the service was not good each time. At the last one where I filmed, the staff told me "You can eat here if you won't stay long." I never had any intention to stay long but I got the feeling they don't have much respect for customers because almost none of them are repeaters, regular customers.
I cannot recommend this area, but I hope you have a better experience than me. Try ordering something different than ramen at the yatai.

Shidqi akram thanks! This is a great comment and chance to explain the channel a little. I love FOOD but Japan is a lot more than that. The video in Osaka about a highway through a building is almost at 1M views -- the NARA STREET FOOD episode before that was released later and has fewer -- so everyone seems to like other stuff too :) I'll always try to add FOOD in episodes when relevant because it's an important part of Japan, but it shouldn't always be the "main dish" of this series. The reasons behind why it's so good can be explained with the culture and that's in every episode of OIJ. A lot of anime and manga fans are calling for more Akihabara stuff too! A live stream on my B channel (OIJ GO) from Akiba is the biggest breakthrough on that new channel. But man, are these food episodes delicious to do!!! Thanks for writing in and sharing your interest in the show. I love the feedback and appreciate your time to express it. -John

4:17 I know exactly what you're talking about John. My eyes were opened one night when I ate at Santouka Ramen inside of Mitsuwa Marketplace in Arlington Heights, IL. I had the spicy miso ramen with slices of pork, a hard boiled brown egg, and a bowl of steamed white rice with pork shavings / chopped leeks on top. My mind was utterly blown. I kid you not, from that night forward, I told myself if I ever had a last meal, I would want it to be a bowl of spicy miso ramen from Santouka Ramen. People just won't understand until that moment when they finally have a bowl of life-changingly delicious ramen!

psygn0sis thanks! I really wanted to get these out while doing the trip but my laptop was just too slow to do it and I was exhausted by the time I got into my tent or hotel. Haha! The live streams filled in the gaps. the great thing with the hitchhiking trip is that I have lots of content to fill in future episodes so I think the series will be richer in details as a result of it. Mr Turbo He dedicated another channel to the live streams. This channel is now solely for edited videos. Initially, he was experimenting and trying to promote the other channel which was why he did some live streams here. I'm a fan of both formats. :)

Fukuoka is indeed Japan's Ramen capital and it's a great cultural asset that they preserved the Yatais (movable street restaurants). We also recommend Udon, which is also highly popular in Fukuoka and northern Kyushu :)

SUPERGENKI JAPAN thanks Thomas! Always happy when you write in! How was the service and taste 6-7 years ago? It is sad that they may not be around much longer but there are enough yatai dotting the surrounding Fukuoka streets. I didn't film it but I actually met a young guy (30s) in Nakasu who started his own push-cart yatai in the early Showa era style. I may go back and make an episode on him because I really love yatai, the community it brings in and it's a nice chance to document them while I can.

My pleasure John, you always produce fantastic videos. Well, IMO, 6-7 years ago, quality was better, as most customers were local Japanese who expected a certain quality/taste. It seems to me, that now, the yatais are merely tourist attractions - the local customers are more or less gone, and now the customers are mostly chinese, korean or western tourists, who has no - or very little idea - of what Hakata Ramen and food in general should taste like = quality has gone down. Me too, love going to yatai. I like the Yatai Mura in Kagoshima and Naha - atmosphere and food is somehow more genuine, what Hakata yatais used to be like. I hope you do an episode on that yatai guy, i'd love to see that. Have a good one John ^^ Thomas

I will be heading back to Fukuoka this summer to grab myself a bowl of Tonkotsu ramen! Seriously, I have had ramen elsewhere in Japan but nothing beats that of the ramen you find in Fukuoka. T_T You are right about the part where "ÿou can't go back once you had great ramen". It is incredible!

💗 your videos ! but how sad to hear the bad service at the yatai ! sign of the times ?? my only memory of yatai ramen was an amazing one - Feb 2000, cold and rainy, it was not very early and most places were shut. the warm steamy interior was such a comforting welcome to 2 hungry people ! the ramen was delicious and the old man was very kind to us. there were 2 other customers, and one of them was chatting to the old man while drinking beer. i will never forget that cozy feeling of steamy fragrant shelter, delicious nourishment and simple friendship on that cold & wet evening.

I "lived" in Fukuoka as part of a study abroad program for six months. I stayed in Nishijin (a hop, skip and a jump away from Hakata and Tenjin with the trains, really) and the food in this part of Japan is AMAZING. I visited Tokyo a couple of times, but the ramen and udon here is just much better. If you're ever in Fukuoka, there's the usual tourist spots and things like Fukuoka Tower (which is next to a really nice museum no one talks about for some reason), Canal City mall and Hakata Station (with a Pokecenter!), but the small Nishijin walkway of shops and cafes is really nice. Small, yeah, but some of the best food I've ever eaten hidden between pachinko parlors, American fast food shops and carts selling fresh veggies and fruits. There's even a small donut shop that sells animal face donuts!
