Some absolute legends of Test cricket make it onto our Top 20 in 2020 countdown of the best Test batting performances in Australia so far this century - but who's Number 1?
Yep, was a top innings, Siddle was on fire and looked like bowling us to victory, Faf stood in his way and held on for the draw 8 or 9 wickets down. That draw went a long way to helping South Africa win the series, they absolutely smashed us in Perth in the decider
It came against a tired-up English bowling attack lower down the order, with the foundation already laid on by top order batters. The innings was an exhilarating one but there have been better in Australia.
@@aakashsaini2184 True but it also missed by 1 ball to equalling the fastest ton in the history of test cricket. It was also while the ashes were still on the line and it was a personal triumph for gilly against the attack, mainly flintoff, who had tormented him to despair 18 months earlier to the point of him seriously considering quitting the game. He was still feeling down about it all when he woke up in the morning on this day of destiny, day 3 of the 3rd test in perth 2006-07. It should have made the cut.
The other one that was ridiculous not to be included was Steve Waugh's career saving century against England in sydney of january 2003. Also Michael Vaughn's batting in that same series when he emerged as the first truly world class English batsman to take it to Australia for more than a decade.
I think Kohli's hundred at 2012 Adelaide deserved a place. Came into bat when India had lost Gambhir, Sachin, Laxman, Dravid under 100 runs. Batted the most of his innings with tailenders. He Was the only centurion from india in that 4 match series.
@@carncats07 ummm, Hayden's knock of 380, wasn't scored in Australia, hence it wasn't shown, but some of his tons at the Gabba, v England should Ave been up there?!
@@stuartmalcolm1191 Are you on drugs mate? Hayden's record 380 was scored at the WACA against Zimbabwe in 2003. A quick look at a map will tell you that Perth is in Australia. Get your facts and knowledge right before replying to people's comments.
Exactly the point,he said he wont do a cover drive and he score 241 not out, including it to even at no 1 spot would had been a insult to that innings,it was a god on the pitch and the name is Sachin...Sachin...Sachin.
Lara has some majestic scores in australia like 277, 182 etc but he scored them before 2000 and after 2000, his 226 was a treat to watch against some great bowling attack and how fast he scores is a testimony to his talent. Genius. Retired early.
The way you're saying this seems like you're grateful they included Dravid's knock at number 3. As if by placing Dravid at 3...they are praising and giving tribute to YOU in some way. Do you feel like your existence has become worthwhile by Dravid's inclusion here??
@@crazyinsanechessplayer2208 and he became toxic by commenting that genius ?????!!! Only have knowledge to tell thier mistake but not to see your mistake
Cook was a legend of the game no wild celebratation after scoring 200 in alien condition just raised his bat and acknowledge the crowd like a gentleman
@@js11052 that's absolutely right! And Warner had also just scored a brilliant 253 against a somewhat out of sorts NZ attack, for Australia to impose first innings scoreboard pressure of 559 with NZ having to bat against a very strong Australian attack. And yes it was the record by any overseas played ever against Australia in Australia. It's frankly ridiculous that it's not there and near the top at that. Simply because he's from New Zealand would be my bet. He's one of many very underrated players they've had over the years even though they have often struggled to put a whole world class team on the park in test cricket. Also look at Taylor's career stats across forms today and frankly he is a great allround player, and really does deserve all the credit he gets and probably a good bit more.
Even better, they have the audacity to include Warner's hundred in 2011, a forgettable hundred in a match they LOST. Same game he was voted man of the match despite Doug Bracewell taking a 6fer and 9 for the match, and they have barely played Hobart since. Tells you all you need to know about the laughable parochialism in Australian cricket.
@@8thofthe8th bruh Warner's innings was a great one even though I agree with you on mom. But that innings was way better way cause it came in 4th innings when absolutely no one scored runs, he fought alone, it was a one man show in 4th, what's special about Taylor's innings? Highest score by a visiting batsman, yes, I give it to him but it came in flattest of the conditions with everyone scoring runs. That being said, there are many hundreds which doesn't even deserve to be on the list, like kohli's Adelaide 100 in 1st innings didn't deserve to be there, his 2nd innings one or his Perth hundreds would be better
Oh this one did not deserve. Was one of the worst bowling attacks ever set by India in overseas test match also a good batting track to bat on. Cook's 200 also did not deserve to be here.
@@anweshpradhan1842 "One of the worst bowling attacks ever set by India in overseas test match", that bowling attack had Zaheer Khan, Ashwin, Ishant, Umesh. This is better than most of the attacks India ever took to Australia, better than any before 2000, heck better than what we took in 2014-15. 3 of the later played for India for nearly a decade from then on, many overseas as well. That bowling attack reduced australia to 37-3 when Clarke came in & scored 329*. That was also far from a great batting pitch as a powerful Indian batting line-up consisting to likes of Sehwag, Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Kohli etc was allout for 191 to probably the worst australian pace line-up(Pattinson, Hilfenhaus, Siddle) of last 25 yr.
Exactly.. that Optus stadium pitch was the most difficult one to bat on. Virat was the sole player that looked good on that pitch (as always). He made a hundred on that pitch where everyone else had to save themselves from getting injured.
Cooks 235 shouldve been ranked higher because of the situation of the game England were dead and buried when he walked out to bat but he pulled them back into the game
6 Indians, 6 Australians, 4 S Africans, 2 English, 1 West Indian, 1 Lankan Indians have always batted well in Australia, apart from 2011-12 series where the big batsmen were past their prime. Bowling always let India down in the past.
@@leeroyc4148 then please tell me how many times did indian bowlers took 20 wickets and given challenging ( not impossible) total to give a chance to all those players to win for india.
*Dravid's Knock literally deserves at least 2nd place if it's not for 1st place.. that knock literally changed the pace of Indian cricket and it's approach towards overseas tour*
I guess the top two greatest battings in australia should be of 1) FAF & 2) AB. In the same inning they played some sensational model of test cricket. Remember guys. An inning needn't be a century to be the greatest.
Exactly bro....i mean that is one of the all time best test innings played and yes ofcourse best here does not mean glorious and beautiful innings...but the grit that ganguly showed and the pathway he paver was remarkable......playing against the odds and checking his agressive mindset , playing against the nornal regular ganguly style....was a treat to watch.....i really pitty and doubt the people who have made selections of the innings for this video........
Agree..his batting has been overshadowed by his captaincy, people talk about what a good leader he was..but they often forget about the fact that he was champion batsam too!
I have no clue how ABD's 100 in a chase of 434 in the final innings of a test, against one of the most hostile home crowds is 11th? That should ideally be in top 5.
@@soumyamishra8892 they are trying to chase 434 in a limited time. I am sure the game plan was to have other batters block, while he got the freedom. He has the skills to back his game. See, at the end of the day it's all personal opinions. I don't have any arguments with the creators of this video. In my opinion ABD's innings rates higher.
@@soumyamishra8892 I hear you. I think what you're saying is that he didn't display all different styles of batting in one innings. Maybe that's how they've rated it.
@@secretm4a1rifle68 MCG boxing day, carn't remember the stand.......Tendulkar was out a couple of balls later, caught down the leg side B Lee was the bowler
Ian chappell said that kohli hundred in Adelaide in second innings was the best 4 innings batting he had seen in Australia. Well done CA for not including that
Lara is probably the best test batsman of the post 90s era. There was a time he had no decent teammate to give him support at the other end. Still he managed to fight daunting targets with flair. That's why the Australian greats like Waugh rate him as the best..and not Tendulkar
I was looking for a name and was not coming and then came at NO 3 The name is RAHUL DRAVID who deserves it the most Allways with love and respect to THE LEGEND💪❤️💪💪🇮🇳
Almost quarter of the centuries are from Indian tour of 2003. And a case could be made for so many other centuries from the same series. Forget every century! Every ball, every run and every wicket was of high importance. Those who say 2005 ashes was the best, most forget that Australia was already declining by then which made it easier for England to compete. Besides, has England not won the series, most wouldn't even talk about it. Hype was only because the other team was the winner. Just underscores the magnitude of that test series and the fact that Ind vs Australia had become THE contest in cricket. The players understood it. Media didn't want to acknowledge it (English)
Always a difficult task to do a top 20 in last 20 years ! 1. They needed to exclude Australian players and just make it top20 100s by non Australian players for simplicity. 2. Some 100s dis not make much sense. They looked just statical in nature. Eg: ponting 257 was included then why omit his 242 which he scored just in the previous match against India? 3. They should also provide some context which would make the viewers appreciate it further.
Mohammed Yousuf’s century in 2006 at the MCG was pure poetry. Not sure why it’s in the list. Can’t recall a more effortless batting performance in Australia in a long time.
@@rishabh4539 that may or may not be the case but you can only bat against what's in front of you. Plus his strokeplay was outstanding and a triple is a triple, it's an amazing display of batsmanship no matter who it's against hence Lara's 400 and Hayden's 375
@@carncats07 don't appreciate the attitude bro. Believe it or not, working for the NHS means a lot more is on my mind currently than cricket statistics and to be only five off given how long ago it happened seems forgivable plus it doesn't diminish the point. Maybe once I've got some time off, we can debate with accurate stats but maybe you should let it go buddy.
Instead of Kohli's 115, they should have added his 116 vs Australia which was his maiden test hundred. He walked into bat when india had lost Gambhir, Sehwag, Dravid, Sachin and Laxman under 100 runs and then scored a hundred. That was India's only hundred in the series.
Many memorable knocks were missing. Heyden 380 Clarke 329* Ponting 242 Adam voges 239 Langer 250 Ross Taylor 290 Pujara 192 Virat 169 Gilchrist 104* WACA Ganguly 144* Warner 180 on debut Etc
I got a little suprised by the arrangement as Faf du Plessis was placed on the first number but still all these players are collectively flamboyant and agressive somewhere.
I like all the mentions that were not in the top 20 list. There so many options. It must've been really difficult to choose the top 20 and it is understandable many may not agree. Still a great list tho
